Rounds of Booming Storms Continue

Good Monday, everyone. Rounds of showers and storms were common over the weekend and that action shows zero signs of going away. Storms on the move this week look to continue into the upcoming weekend, with more in the way of hit and run flash flooding issues.

Temps today are generally in the muggy 80s with a mix of sun and clouds. Scattered showers and storms will be around with a greater concentration of storms showing up this evening through Tuesday.

A few of these storms may be strong and briefly severe, but all of the showers and storms will be capable of putting down a lot of water in a short amount of time. This future radar from the Hi Res NAM starts at 8 this evening and goes through 8 Tuesday evening…

The setup then features another front dropping toward the region from the northwest later this week. That boundary then stalls on top of us through the upcoming weekend, leading to additional waves of showers and torrential rain producing thunderstorms.

This GFS animation starts Wednesday evening and goes through next Monday…

Once again, the models are seeing the potential for hefty rainfall numbers over the next week…

The GFS Ensembles show well above normal rainfall for the entire region over the next two weeks…

While all this is happening, we continue to watch the potential tropical development near Florida. This system continues to get the attention of the National Hurricane Center…

I leave you with your daily dose of shower and storm tracking tools…

No beneficial rains here ( > 1.00 inch, ) 0.38 ” so far in July. I wish this La Nina high pressure system would go away.

    We are nowhere near drought.

    • Schroeder

Right we are not in a drought, but if one has very well drained soil ( like I have, ) I am in a drought.

Adding to the above. The crops look great in certain areas of the county.

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the deadly July 1995 Chicago Heat Wave (from July 12th – 16th) which claimed over 500 lives. During the peak of the heat wave on the 13th, Midway Airport reached a high of an incredible 106 degrees, with an even more incredible heat index of 124! Chicago’s official weather station at O’Hare Airport reached 104 degrees that day, with a heat index of 118.

Here is the link for a very informative summary and historical perspective of the heat wave from the NWS: https://weather.gov/lot/1995_HeatWave

      I remember that well.

I remember that heat wave, as I was working my plant nursery, and the air temperature was 102. I grew up in the Midwest, so I just learned to take care when those heat waves came around. Drink a lot of water !
