Good Tuesday, everyone. Where’s the heat? Temps only hit the mid to upper 80s for most of the state on Monday with the mesonet sites only showing 1 hitting 90 and that was in far western Kentucky. Today is going to be similar with readings in the mid and upper 80s in the east and around 90 in the west.
To further mess with the heat hype… we will be watching for a few showers and storms working in from the northwest. That action may get started later today or tonight… especially in the east and northeast. Any action that blows up can be on the strong side. Here’s regional radar…
The flow will become more favorable for a few clusters of storms across central and eastern Kentucky into Wednesday. Again, these will be diving in from the northwest and some could be strong…
That trend will carry us into Thursday. Clouds or storms will play a big role in temps where you live.
The holiday weekend will feature more of the same with the threat for scattered storms and temps on the toasty side of things. The latest European Model is bringing a strong cold front in here on Labor Day…
The cold air behind that front is probably a little overdone, but it’s the first of two fronts that will show up around here next week.
There is likely to be a pretty decent buildup of cold air in Canada over the next few weeks. If you don’t believe me, check out the GFS 2 week snowfall forecast from up north…
Make it a good one and take care.
I can smell the snow in the air!
Wow! With the past 3 runs of the Euro, its been trending colder within the last day! It has us here in Lexington with highs in the mid 60’s!!! I thought the cold was way overdone 2 runs ago, now its colder. I will believe it if it shows up again this afternoon. http://tinyurl.com/lv44xjp
Interesting trivia.
159 years ago on this date (Aug 27) was a Louisville tornado:
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lmk/?n=tornado_climatology_1854
Estimated to be only an F2. Path length of a mere two miles. It probably would have been rather quickly forgotten after the damage was cleaned up.
Sadly, it made a direct hit on a crowded church, with 20+ people losing their lives.
The good news is that there have been no recorded fatalities from tornadoes in KY during August since this 1854 event – believe it or not.
Spring is when KY and TN tend to experience stronger tornadoes. On somewhat rare occasions, these stronger twisters can also happen during late fall and even the middle of winter in our area.
But July/August/September tornadoes in KY and TN tend to be relatively weak (none recorded stronger than F2/EF2). Any stronger tornadoes this time of year in the USA tend to stay closer to the Canadian boarder. Thus, this 1854 Louisville event causing such high loss of life in August is an unfortunate fluke. Lets hope our area can go another 160 years at least with no tornado fatalities in August.
So do I need to get my pool ready to close soon.I usually have it open late in September.
TEST
Dewpoints now into the 70’s almost statewide. Not many 90 degree air temps but the heat index is in the low 90’s in most spots. Hot for this summers’ standard but a far cry from extreme.
15 day drought in east Frankfort, No more mowing until it rains here, I know you hate the sound of that 😉
It pouring in Lawrenceburg as of 8:41 P.M. I told you build, a pipeline!!
Build an Ark my friend!
Radar must be broken. It’s not picking up the rain that’s falling at my house in Knox County
I hope the cold front ease on into Virginia and stay!
88 degrees here in Nashville. With our cloud cover, looks like we may fail to reach 90. Even cooler on the plateau with Crossville TN checking in at a mere 84.
In contrast, Louisville has already cracked 90. Radar shows a renegade t-storm just north of the city.
At this time, looking very warm and humid for the Kentucky-WKU game Saturday night in Nashville. A slight chance of a t-shower; hopefully any storms will die off after sunset as the daytime heating ends.
The predicted big surge of much cooler air (and the accompanying significant increase in t-storms) won’t happen until well after the game. So while one may have to sweat a bit during the game, looks like relatively low chances of any lightning strike delays – in marked contrast to last season’s Kentucky-Arkansas game.
Gotta say Chris nailed the scattered shower forecast today, other mets said no chance of rain today, Chris still the man 🙂
On the bright side–no drought here in Lawrenceburg this summer. On the dark side–can’t we share this rain with someone else who needs it? Pouring again–just when I thought I might go seven!! (7!!) days between mowing.
