Good Wednesday to one and all. How’s this big “heat wave” treating you guys? I say that with my tongue firmly planted in cheek because the heat has been a no show, so far. This makes the blog feel good because it’s playing out as we have advertised.
Temps will continue to hit the mid and upper 80s across central and eastern Kentucky today with 90ish in the west. Can someone in central Ky actually hit 90? Yep… but, clouds will play a factor in that.
A weak cold front will slide in here this evening and provide us with a better shot at a shower or thunderstorm working in from north to south. Here’s regional radar…
The forecast for the rest of the week is very similar to what we have… highs in the mid and upper 80s with the occasional 90 and isolated storms.
The threat for storms will increase over the upcoming weekend as a cold front moves our way. That front arrives by Labor Day…
That front will usher in MUCH cooler and drier air for the middle of next week. Check out how the heat ridge gets pushed back toward the west…
Looking farther down the road… the GFS is going a little crazy with a deep trough in the eastern part of the country…
Have a great day and take care.
My name is Cameron Fry and I approve this forecast. I sure hope the trend of a post-Labor Day cool-down continues and that this isn’t a mirage. Anyone remember the sharp cooldown we had in 2011? A 40 degree drop in high temperature with two days?
I’m confused by the sarcasm. It’s really hot, isn’t it? And isn’t this the hottest and muggiest week we’ve had all summer?
we have had hotter and more humid weather at least in Knox
I’m confused how you could detect sarcasm. I’m not talking about the now as compared to the future (next week and beyond) and seeing evidence of cooler temps (see latest 12z, 18z GFS model runs). I’m thinking this ‘heat wave’ is short-lived.
I wasn’t talking to you Cameron Fry. I was making a comment about Chris’ post, of course..
Where is the heat? Seriously? Today is our fifth day in a row of 90’s here in Louisville with a forecast high of 95-97 degrees. Highs in the mid 90’s are forecast from today till Monday. We’re also slipping into a drought here as things continue to dry out. The ground is baked and everything is turning brown. I’ve had one day with rain in the month of August.
I agree Frankfort area has seen very lttle rain this month, a drought is starting here to outside of those lucky few areas that always seem to get the localized downpours.
I think when east ky stays wet and cooler that seems to override what is happening in other places!
Drought????
Yes, drought, or darn close to it. It’s extremely dry in parts of Louisville. All that rain earlier in the year shut off in July. I’ve had 0.85 inch of rain in the gauge at my home during the month of August – all but a few sprinkles coming on one day. Trees are dropping leaves. Lawns are nearly brown. Official high today in Louisville: 96 degrees. When I got up this morning at 6 a.m., my two home thermometers both read 76. Pretty darn hot to me.
Campared to other parts of the state we are very dry, maybe not official drought criteria but when you have had less than 1 tenth of an inch in three weeks that in my book is atleast a mini drought!
What about Sunday CB? It’s a weekend day too! I have an outdoor wedding to attend. 🙂
Looks like a few storms around. 🙁
Agreed. It’s 94 degrees right now at Bowman Field with a dry and hot wind blowing. Forecast indicates a string of about 10 or 11 days in a row above 90 degrees, including the 5 we have already had. We need rain in a very bad kind of way.
Ever wonder why their is no mesonet site in Jefferson County? Because it would show just how hot biased the “official” thermometers are for the city. Talk about skewing numbers… the Louisville thermometers are as biased hot as you will ever find.
I agree that the main airport is usually biased but Bowman Field isn’t and it’s currently 93 degrees there, the same as Standiford Field.
And no, I never gave the mesonet a thought.
Today is Louisville’s hottest day of the summer so far. 96 degrees.
Storm Prediction Center saying only a 20% chance of a watch being issued for parts of KY, including virtually all of the east, including Lexington, including northern KY, etc.

As Chris has tweeted, roof damage being reported near Ashland KY. At least one severe t-storm warning so far. While wind and hail could briefly reach severe limits again, it’s looking too isolated a threat for a watch at this time.
Looks like I-75 and to the east gets the best chance of rain tonight, the dry tundra of Frankfort and Louisville looks to stay dry again!
Who is this “we” person I hear so much about?
It is dangerously hot in eastern Kentucky right now. I know it might not seem that way to someone who leaves an air conditioned vehicle to go into an air conditioned building. How many times in the winter do we see tirades about “It’s all bout impact, people!!!”? The heat and humidity are dangerous and possibly life threatening right now, whether “we” predicted it or not.
You had a high in the upper 80s in the Big Sandy… exactly what “we” predicted. Upper 80s is normal… not dangerous.
That back patting arm will wear thin one day, dude.
