Good Saturday, everyone. It’s the first weekend of 2026 and our weather is rather boring and seasonably cold. The cold won’t hold as our temps surge into next week before the mild turns a little wild as Old Man Winter flexes.

Our day starts with lots of clouds and the chance for a snowflake or touch of sleet. This isn’t a big deal and would move away pretty quickly as clouds hang tough. Those clouds break some during the afternoon with colder air moving in from the north. That sets us up for a colder Sunday with temps mainly in the 30s with a mix of sun and clouds.

Warmer winds kick in for Monday as a southwest flow gets established. That brings the 50s surging in across much of the state. This flow has a weak system embedded with it for Tuesday, leaving us with the chance for a shower or two.

Temps REALLY surge Wednesday through Friday ahead of the big pattern change to winter. This is delayed about 2 days from my original thinking, which isn’t that bad for a two weeks away forecast. Once we get that trough to dip into the east, the pattern is primed for some DEEP troughs.

The models are all coming in line with this. Here’s the EURO starting Thursday through the following week…

The upper levels give us a good indication of the overall setup which trends strongly to winter and a likely harsh period. The details at the surface will change from one run to the next, but the models are all locked in on the same general theme.

We go from strong storms, high winds and mild temps Thursday and Friday, to the first shot of winter following that next weekend with a much bigger blast a day or two later. Here’s the current look at the EURO at the surface…

The Canadian Model doesn’t go out as far as the EURO, but it has the same general look…

Here’s the Canadian at the surface that also has a similar look through the following Monday…

And the Parallel Canadian…

Winter is coming… back!

Updates later today. I’ll also have a few updates on my Meteorologist Chris Bailey Facebook Page
