Good Thursday evening everyone. Once again, I want to say a big thanks for all the hard work you guys have put in over the past several days. I appreciate each of you more than you know. The big question now is… where does the weather pattern go from here?
Let’s break it down…
– Freezing drizzle or some very light snow showers will be with us this evening and overnight. This may create a light glaze.
– Friday into the weekend will feature cold temps as readings stay in the 20s for much of central and eastern Kentucky for highs. Out west… readings will warm into the 30s. Lows can hit the single digits from Saturday- Monday. There is a small chance for some flurries or very light snow showers.
– There is likely to be a big storm working up the east coast and there is an outside chance this would throw some light snow into extreme southeastern Ky. Here is the European model with this storm…
– Clouds will begin to increase later Monday as a clipper works our way from the northwest. As usual… the models are going to be all over the place with the track from this far out. That said… I like a track moving across the Tennessee Valley from Tuesday into Wednesday. This should happen with a piece of energy diving in from the northwest. I really can’t argue with what the European is doing with this system…
That would produce a nice swath of snow across the state during this time with snow showers kicking behind the low as more cold air pours back in.
Given that and the amount of snow on the ground across much of the commonwealth… one has to love the chances of a white Christmas this year!
Have a great Thursday evening and take care.

So us in Middlesboro could expect some snow on Saturday night into Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday?
Thank you for being there for all of us. We have the best “Weather dude” in the U.S.. I’m dreaming of a white Christmas… 🙂
Thanks Chris. I agree Celena, we do have the best “Weather Dude” in the world. I think Chris probably needs to get some rest. Hopefully the next system brings more snow.
Mr Heat Mizer bust be on vacation this year.
Mr Heat Mizer bust be on vacation this year.
must that is, darn typos
CB totally rocks! Thanks so much, Chris, for taking the time to share your expertise with us. We love our awesome weather dude!
Thanks Chris, all of us here are really grateful for the awesome job that you do for us here in KY!! You go above and beyond what other meteorologists do to give us a heads up on what is heading our way days in advance. I too have to agree we are very lucky to have the best weather dude around. Keep up the good work, and try and catch up on some rest, I have a feeling tat you might need it next week into the weekend. I for one am looking forward to reading your thoughts and tracking the upcoming storms.
Thanks for all of the hard work; I am so hoping for a white Christmas even if it is just enough to cover the ground in Knox Co.. Keep us informed.
Here we are again hoping that a clipper system will take the tn. track & over preform as it passes thru the area. The last gfs & nam runs had the low tracking north. I would not get my hopes up on this event it is basically a game of dice when it comes to systems that form over Alberta.
Yeah Chris between your informative blog and Wave3’s blog in Louisville the Commonwealth of Kentucky is spoiled for us weather fanatics, great work Chris.
Looks like we got around 5 inches of snow with a thin layer of ice on top here in Morehead today. We are now getting some freezing drizzle, not sure how the roads are I stayed in all day, but have to head out in morning to go to work…
Chris will we get a front coming around Christmas eve and christmas Mitch or anyone who knows this model stuff we got about 6 inches and some ice here in Morgan co
Will peoples still be able to get from lexington to Letcher co for christmas.
Chris, yet another top notch job at predictions and coverage. You can’t be beat! Thanks for the look ahead. Merry Christmas!!!
too early to get excited about the comp. mod. for mon & tues. GFS has the storm moving north. I hope the Tn. val. scenario comes to fruition. I never get excited about a clipper event until the moisture starts & radar is showing positive returns. Clipper events are a Mother nature craps game.
Well, it’s been a great week of forecasting and I’m sure this next system will be fun. So Long, just until the next discussion starts.
Thanks for all your hard work! We have a snow removal business and rely on your information.
We’ve talked about how this December has been similar to December 1989 (which was probably the coldest, snowiest December ever in Lexington). An interesting stat…following that ’89 December the rest of Winter was MILD. In fact, by the second week of March temps were near 80!
yeah and by what most are showing that fairly same scenario could happen this yr. as well..so we better get all the winter we can between now and the middle of Jan…because by valentines day..we all may be getting early spring fever…
Chris…thanks for all those updates, and dedication to the blog along with all of you who make the blog a weather community where we all share a common interest..
……………
Now I hope we get another shot at a good snow for Christmas..since the rain washed most of ours away down here in southern ky…or at least some snow in the air…
What was the total snowfall for Lexington in December 1989? Thanks.
Freezing mist seems to be in the area. Lexington… Eww.
The blowtorch option assumes this la nina acts as a typical la nina. There are signs that is not the case. Global hurricane production was very high this year, high lattitude blocking is extremely strong, and there is evidence sub surface Pacific waters are warming. In fact, regions 3.4 and 4 are warming right now. All this could lead one to believe la nina is weakening.
Dean Grubbs of deanreport.blogspot.com has said he is going to have throw his forecast of long mild periods in January away. He thinks the cold is going to win out for many of the reasons I just listed. Even DT has said the warming of the Pacific could lead to a very cold end of winter.
1989 is a possibility, but I think 2000-2001 is in play as well.
Yes, I totally second this notion. Kentuckians are blessed in many ways – the work of these mets is surely one of them.
Chris,
What are your thoughts going into January and February?
That’s one of my biggest fears is a mild rest of winter. Who knows.
Thanks for all you do Chris. I like when I can educate my Meckhead friends of the correct weather dude to follow!!! 🙂
wondering if we are ever going to see that “winter forecast” that was promised us the week of Thanksgiving. I do realize it’s been an active period. But, it’s almost January. I would really like Chris’s thoughts on the next 3 months.
Thanks Chris!!! You did a great job of forecasting the weather for us down here in Clay. We got some snow but mostly ice, the roads are still a mess. I live on a side road. Can’t wait to see what next week brings. I hope a snowy Christmas and weekend. Get some well deserveed rest and keep us updated bout the maps for Sun- Tues. What will we expect down here in Clay County.?
I would like to thank Chris also. You provide such a valuable service for free. Thanks and Merry Christmas to you wynter and your wife and family and to all my fellow bloggers.
Chris, thank you for all the effort and time you put in to provide us all with the Bailey Outlook and Forecast, proved to be THE most accurate source of weather information anywhere.
Merry Christmas to you and your family!

To answer your question from above…..December 1989 had a total of 9.3 inches of snow in Lexington, followed by .2 for Jan, none for Feb and 3.7 for March.
I was looking at other snowy Decembers. 1967 had 10.7 in Dec, then the following Jan ’68 had 12.10, Feb had 3.10, and March had 8.6 for a seasonal total of 34.50
There are several Decembers that had a good bit of snow and the following months it kept right on snowing.
It’s so hard to say what will happen. I guess we will see in a few months.
Just wanted everyone to know that the roads have become dangerous again tonight here on the West side of London!Ice on them! So please be careful if you have to be out!
What I thought was drizzling rain turned out to be freezing drizzle here in London! Please be careful tonight if you have to be out. It’s very sleek!
Interesting that the winter of 67-68 was snowy, as April of 68 featured a tornado outbreak in the area that produced an F4 that took out my Dad’s house (before I was born).
i went up to my place in nky..about 5-6 new inches of snow there. thats about 11” there on the month so far…just amazing how the winter has gone so far. i say bring on more snow lets git ir done!!!
don’t worry he’ll be returning to usher in the new year or shortly after that. i sense he may make an appearanxce on the euro weeklies soon.
definite chance we could see a thaw come mid-jan into feb then a reversal for one more quick strike of winter in late feb due to the warming of those pac waters.
What was the 2000-2001 winter like?
Hi, Thanks for sharing such a wonderful piece of information. I must say that while reading your post I found my thoughts in agreement with the topic that you have discussed, which happens very rare.
