Good Friday everyone and welcome to the weekend. This has been an incredible week of wintry weather across the state with two winter storms striking the region. This is helping cement December, 2010 as one of the all time great starts to winter around here. As it stands now… more cold and snow chances will carry us through the upcoming Christmas week and likely into early January.
In the short term… clouds and periodic light snow and flurries will be with us on this Friday. The light snow will be a bit more frisky across the north and east where some minor accumulations may occur. A lot of the flakes may not even show up on radar. For those that do…
Temps today really won’t change my from morning to afternoon as much of the state stays in the 20s. The west and Tennessee border counties will hang around the freezing mark. Following the stagnant temps here…
Current Temps
Temps into the weekend probably won’t change very much either. Highs should generally be close to what you have out there today. Lows will be dependent on any clearing that can take place. If we can clear the skies by Sunday or Monday morning… readings can tank over a snowpack. If clouds hang around… then thermometers will be in the teens.
We will also see a flurry chance right on through Saturday and Sunday. There will be a small threat for a batch of light snow to impact extreme southeastern Kentucky Saturday night as low pressure cranks up along the southeast coast.
That brings us to a new week that is no ordinary week as it will lead us into the big Christmas weekend. The pattern setting up is one that is good for a couple of clippers working in from the northwest. The first should arrive Monday night into Tuesday and produce a swath of light snow across the region into Wednesday. It may even be preceded by a streak of light snow Sunday night or Monday morning. The Canadian Model shows this scenario…
The timing of the next system COULD be just in time for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. That will be something to watch for as the elusive White Christmas is very much in play this year. Not just for the clipper potential, but for the fact some of the snow on the ground now may still be there by this time next week for some folks.
On a blog related note… I want to again say thanks for making us one of your sources for all things Kentucky weather. Wednesday’s action gave our server a workout as we had our busiest traffic day ever with more than 400,000 hits (are you listening prospective partners? ). My name may be at the top of the blog… but this site belongs to you guys.
Ok… enough of the mushy talk. I will have another update coming your way later this afternoon so be sure to check back.

Thanks Chris as you say sleep is over rated. Its 28 in Pikeville with snow falling.I don’t ever want to see Ice again. It got on our heat pump and it was glazed over with huge icicles causing it to stop until my husband thawed it.I was so glad when our heat started working again what a day.
I want to thank you Chris for the wonderful work you do. I use your site for my job as Safety Coordinator at my place of employment. It has really helped me. Thanks again and keep up the great work!!
Love the winter stuff but how about getting them in here on weekends so I don’t have to keep driving in bad weater to work everyday!!! Getting old.
I am sooooo glad you missed this one for me. I received zero ice here in harlan county 🙂
This blog is awesome.
freezing rain in clay county, main roads ok just take ur time. but up the side roads its slick.
FEEEZING RAIN ADV. TILL 10AM.
Not really gettting a good vibe on a white Christmas for southern Kentucky. Chris said “could” in all caps, look at a storm for next weekend & then he refrenced snow already on the ground for some folks. I know the snow on the ground doesn’t make the holiday…but it does add to the feel of things!!
Freezing rain at my house just north of Hazard.
This last system did snow for some folks in the north and east of the state, but for most of us, it was kind of like Charlie Brown at Halloween: All we got was a rock: Made of ICE 😉
Warm air left us a reminder that for frozen precip- it is still a playa’!
Sadly, I can see ice coming back this winter for an encore. Light snow does have a fair shot though- mid next week.
next week suystem look to be ice at the start and maybe for who sstem in places. even rain S/SE
Front porch report from Mt. Sterling – looks like another 1/2 inch of the white stuff. Street is covered again. Since there’s no school, this is the unofficial beginning of winter break, only one day of classes this week. 🙁 I really hope we get an early end to the school year for our senior class.
Chris, I am officially a Chris Bailey fan and have been since your time in Lex. KY–Thanks for all you do and Merry Christmas.
In response to Seth’s question from last night: December 1989 had 9.2″ of snowfall in Lexington. The average temp. for the month was 23.5 degrees. MANY records still stand from December 1989. Our current December is threatening to break some of those all-time records. It’s wild!
Thanks for the Cristmas update Chris. Hope everyone has a great weekend.
Thanks Chris and everyone else for all your hard work. I really enjoyed watching and sometimes posting. I am glad we missed the really big one here in Millville.
light glaze of ice on everything again this morning in knox co..temp. sitting at 30* at the mesonet site.. I wonder if that precip. moving into western ky and tenn. is hitting the ground…looks like that sneaky little I-40 snow/ice..system…snow/rain all the way back into texas and oklahoma this morning..could be something to watch for here along the tn./ky. border..
well here is the 06z run of the gfs for Christmas day..showing snow north and rain to snow south….anyone wanna take a bet on how many times this will change between now and then…lol..at least 5 or 6 times im sure…

Already a dusting in Shelbyville this morning and still snowing lightly.
Dusting of snow here in Dry Ridge this morning in addition to what we already have on the ground. It continues to snow lightly.
Road conditions down here on the border are becoming treacherous!! Very fine snow still coming down and lots of black ice….temp holding steady at 28*.Please be careful out there!!
Definitely agree with the sentiments everyone has expressed in regard to Chris and this site.it’s awesome..and the only site I rely upon for accurate forecasts….it’s snowing lightly here in Morehead and already have a good dusting…
Light snow in Fleming County.
Chris,
Thanks for all your hard work and great weather reporting. You are the best weather man around and I really enjoy all the extra information and weather prediciting that you give us! Do you ever sleep?
Chris Says (As it stands now… more cold and snow chances will carry us through the upcoming Christmas week and likely into early January.)
I hope winter doesn’t end there.
I would love to see Chris discuss the long range upper air pattern. In other words, does he think the cold will persist well into January, or is he fearful of the January blowtorch that often comes wth la ninas. In 1989-1990, we went very warm after a terribly cold December. It wasn’t a blowtorch in 2000-2001, but it warmed after that December.
Personally, I think it’s too early to say whether this la nina will act as a typical one. Global hurricance production was high, high lattitude blocking has been extreme, and there are signs the la nina is beginning to fade. Sub surface measurements show lots of warming. Regions 3 and 3.4 have warmed at the surface as well.
I remember back in 2000-2001, one of the analogs Bastardi used was the winter of 1899. That year, the PV came down into the Great Lakes and it was brutal all winter. It seems the PV may be aimed more at Europe this year, but I think signs are building we won’t see the blowtorch we feared a month or so ago.
This is the sense I get reading some of DT’s comments and those of long range forecasters on other sites.
Accucrack’s long range has an ice storm for Lexington on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Nice.
It’s looking interesting for sure. I’ll say that much. Will be another one to keep an eye on over the coming weekend for model trends…
I hope us in extreme Southeastern KY do see some light snow tomorrow night into Sunday. Bring on the snow for the next whole week!
Light snow flurries/drizzle between Lawrenceburg and Salvisa.
It seems we have more chances for big ice events, rather than big snow events.
So far, when a mix is planned, ice has always been more than expected, since the warm air impact tends to be understated. It happened in 2009 and this last event as well. CB and the local mets missed missed this one.
The models have been solid with ice outlooks. If CB starts mentioning it- watch out! CB will be more concerned with ice, based on the last event and the more than expected ice.
I expected the ice, but I never doubt the warm air. If it is between ice or snow for mix, this area will just about be in the ice column, every time.
when is it suppose to ice.
watch for a sneaky light snow accross the south tonight.
I live in Lawrenceburg and work in Salvisa. Great to see someone mention Salvisa!
