Severe Storms and Flash Flooding Possible Today

Good Saturday and welcome to August. The new month is starting out waves of showers and storms spinning across the Commonwealth as a slow-moving system moves through. Some of these storms may be severe and put down enough rains to cause local high water issues.

The day begins with showers and storms moving out of western Kentucky and into the central part of the state. These may be strong or severe in the west before weakening as they roll eastward.

The setup for later this afternoon and early evening is likely to spawn quick development of storms between Interstate 65 and Interstate 75. These are the storms that have the best chance of going severe and this is the area the Storm Prediction Center is also highlighting for the best severe threat today…

The initial storms that go up may have some supercell characteristics capable of spinning up a tornado or two. While the overall threat is low, it’s a threat nonetheless and one that the SPC is highlighting, too…

As the storms form into more of a line, damaging winds will be the main player as the line pushes across central and eastern Kentucky through the evening…

Storms today will also put down tremendous amounts of rain in some areas, leading to an increased chance for flash flooding. The Weather Prediction Center continues to highlight this possibility…

The low pushes slowly across Kentucky on Sunday, producing more showers and storms along the way. Once again, locally heavy rains will be a good bet. This low may push a bit south and east for Monday, but will still keep some showers and storms around central and eastern Kentucky.

Here’s the NAM Sunday morning through Monday night…

That’s such a well-defined circulation and something you really don’t see a lot of in the summertime.

That same spin is likely to hang around into the middle of next week, bringing more heavy rain producing showers and storms…
