it looks like the last decent snow band is moving thru Louisville at this moment. It should be all over by 8. maybe a few lingering snow flurries after the band moves east.
The Huntington-Ashland tri-state dome still winner and undisputed champion!!!
I agree. Been many years for a real smack down here.
It appears the precip is almost over for Bowling Green. Right in the middle of the city we have stayed with rain all day! Did enjoy the ‘rain’ day with my kids though!
Looks like we will end up closer to the 1 than 4 inch mark here in Lawrenceburg but still in the forecasted range. Not sure the Winter Storm Warning was warranted. Temp down to 30–roads look very slick. Good night to stay at home.
All Madison County got was a rock. Our precipitation so far is of the translucent and highly liquid variety. At least the ice will not be much. Gotta spin for the good 🙂 Still need to be careful/slower driving though.
Zero winter precip so far in Berea, and for once I’m glad. I’d rather lose all chance of snow, if it meant being protected from ice.
The trend is now broken in Louisville. Right at 5 inches at my house.
Any guesses on how much snow Lexington will get? Looks like it might end right after the snow gets here.
At least it got there 😉 Heck, we even missed the ice and I am less than five miles south of Clays Ferry. Cold rain so far.
Moisture (according to radar) is just about played out as it switches to sleet/snow in Lex. Would expect WSW to be cancelled for Fayette County.
Same as it ever was. Well, for the past sixteen years at any rate.
I disagree Bubba. I have had several 5-inch plus snowfalls in the past five years. And I live in the Lexington metro–22 miles from my house to downtown Lexington. I’ve had snow on the ground three times already this young winter season. Yes, 2011-2012 was a major disappointment, but I recorded closed to 30 inches of snow the two winters prior to that. Have I had a “big snow?” No. Have I had decent snows..yes.
I do agree however we are WAY overdue for a region-wide, major snowfall (8 inches or more)
I am referring to the more significant snows. Most of the moisture taps out before freezing unless a clipper (which we have not had in a few years). North Madison has got about diddly in the past few years and the ones we have have all been 2″ or less.
Even the events you allude to were bigger systems that we were the fence for. The result was north of the rive got significantly more snow.
We can agree to disagree 🙂 All I know is we were expecting bad ice and so far nothing- That is a good miss for us, since nothing to accumulate with now when it ever does does start.
Ice and snow tends to beget more ice and snow (if moisture is coming). Colder surface area and subsequent colder local temperatures prime the environment for more. There is a fancy met term for it, but why bother?
Maybe if somebody else like him who argued the point actually LIVED here, he’d be able to have the same viewpoint like us, Bubba. But, in Kentucky in the winter, 10 miles can make all the difference–and it certainly shows here. I’ve lived in Richmond for 3-4 years and the biggest snow I’ve seen here was 4-5″ once.
Your neighborhood is a meterogic anamoly.
Meteorlogical
And now that its the same as over with it is as expected by the time it gets cold enough here we won’t even see a flurry
On to round 2 where we get frozen precip but gone 2 hrs later
I feel for ya, Andy….I’m in Bardstown…had rain pretty much all day. It finally started to sleet & freeze over pretty good around 4pm…lots of snow out west coming this way? Finally turned to snow…have about less than 1/4″ here, snow is fizzling out (of course!) west of us now…can’t catch a break for hell…
Missing ice though is a very good thing 🙂
Not necessarily but the kids did get out early for high water
The radar always seem to fade when the good cold air reaches central KY!
I will take the 1 inch. Snow in Frankfort sounds like we are getting more than a lot of folks this Far East!
EPIC! Sounds like the south side of the Lexington metro gets far less snow than we do. Ready for some clipper-mania–that’s what brings those good 4-5 inch snows!
Usually March the last few years in central KY, crazy that southern Illinois and parts of southern Indiana has a foot of snow or more! The rich get richer!
Wow….. disappointed like most times, the precipitation JUST switched to snow here in Lex about 20 min ago and just enough to cover some of the ground and all the atmosphere is now drying out! So frustrated about all the rain yesterday, and today waiting for when it’ll switch to snow and when it finally does, moisture goes away. Looks like at BEST 0.1″ of snow. >_<
Perhaps CB should have added to the thread title: “….. In the North East of the state” 😉 🙂 At least as far as frozen stuff.
Its just pitiful what our winter storms have become. Instead of snow, we get 3 inches of rain here. Its really frustrating for a snow lover like myself.
I feel your pain…in Bardstown, all we had was rain, more rain, finally some good pounding frz.rn/sleet….after dark, about 28 snowflakes, then everything promising to the west of us on radar started to fade….{{{sigh}}}…
I like living in madison county don’t get me wrong. But today’s weather 34-35 all day temp didn’t move and the rain just kept comin… So frustrating,,,will we ever get a decent snow.
Sat night .? Sorry but it’s going to be same dance same song for madison co south and east. Weather trend prove me wrong
Chris, now that this storm has just about ran out of juice, (and left us poor se ky folks with just muddy waters) can you PLEASE give us a good update on round 2…where some of our hopes and dreams still live just a little…it seems its all we have left at this point for wishing for anything white!…congrats to all you northern and western folk!, we are look at your pics and wish it was us lol
I think an old saying needs to be amended- “The only sure things in life are death, taxes, and no decent snow in Central Kentucky”.
No kidding. I’m in Bardstown…”Ice Storm Capital of KY”…Heck, all we had was rain, rain, more rain, then we finally got heavy sleet/frz. rn for a time…and about 28 snowflakes….then all the snow coming at us from the West just went into oblivion…
I wonder that since this event was more north east and (so far) has not really gone much east as CB thought- will this impact the expected result of the Sat/Sun system? Seem a Yes, since no snow or ice pack in a lot of areas that were expected to get some. Unless the main stuff is tonight, but I thought this was the main stuff.
It is pretty amazing, though, how all day there was a seemingly endless pipeline of moisture from here to central TX, then as soon as the temperature dropped, the moisture vanished like so much mist on a summer’s morning! It’s like (black) magic!
Just drove from downtown Louisville to Lagrange on I-71. Took 2 hours. Must say this is the worst job I’ve ever seen clearing the roads (or lack thereof). Darn near a solid sheet of ice the whole way. Thank goodness for the layer of snow on top!
Snow is ending in Shelbyville. I just measured 1.5″ on my back deck.
Another deck-duster, forecast-buster event in Lex. Anybody know why the powers that be don’t adjust the weather models to improve accuracy or is it just beyond meteorological capability to accurately forecast winter weather in KY?
And it becomes almost laughable when mets keep forecasting during an event based on the models when the radar shows it ain’t gonna happen. Oh well.
So, are we still talking about a second wave tomorrow night into Sunday?
chris is going to make you wait until after the cats games.
Based on the radar, it looks like the moisture for this wave appears mostly gone. Not seeing how that votes a round of confidence for tomorrow or Sunday. This puppy stayed north east with some fringe areas getting a little bit. Even south Lexington got just cold rain. Nothing on the ground will not help temperatures to be colder.
The big positive though is nice to miss ice 🙂
Stop complaining. The whole trend with this system was higher snow totals toward the river, there was a very tight drop off with the snow. I shouldnt have to tell you how many times that was stressed. Winter hasn’t even started yet, be patient.
I really don’t understand the upgrade from Winter Weather Advisory to Winter Storm Warning at 4:00 P.M. here in Lawrenceburg. Yes, it is slick outside. Yes, we had some snow. But nothing I could see that would warrant “warning” criteria. A little sun tomorrow morning and even the untreated roads will be fine.
I just got back in from shoveling my driveway, before I put my shovel away i took one more glimpse knowing i might not see this for another three years.
am I on crack or did we just run out of moisture. nothing but a cold rain for south Fayette county at Clay’s Ferry. all.day.long.
Got plenty of moisture standing in my front yard 🙂
Still snowing in Western Georgetown. We have a nice amount on our deck and a coating of ice underneath that. Staying home and watching Christmas movies and drinking some great tea.
The next time I get excited about a big snow in Lexington, someone please remind me of the dome. Even when it looks like a sure thing,we get the shaft. Don’t care what CB or anyone says about snow totals, I will just wait til it’s over and see what’s outside my door. Same ole thing year in and year out!
But just wait til next time or as is always the case, next week! Happy for the folks in the Ville and other places that got snow. Been a long time coming. I’m so bummed.I need to listen to Bubba more.
I am now officially an IBLIWISI fan. Models now are complete and utter bunk to me. I like CB, but the models are gawd awful. CB should turn it off and just use the Force. I need to watch Spaceballs. I have the Blu ray 🙂
Officially 4.5″ in my driveway. My 3-6″ verified right down the middle.
Seems I’m the exception on here, though.
Hope Santa has a boat, here in southeast Ky we just don’t get the snow anymore
Where do you live c-Biv?
To add insult to injury, the folks in the Ville get more winter tomorrow night, while it’s round 2 of the rain for Lexington and everywhere east
Told you folks this is what would happen. Heavy snow in southern Indiana and Louisville, and the usual shaft in central KY. This will continue the rest of the winter. Why do you people continue to hope and worship those useless junk models? At least here in southern Ky I know we will get nothing but rain. Heck I should dig a big hole in the back yard, have it fill up by March
Keep patting yourself on the back. You’re mad because you didn’t get the storm you wanted, so now you’re drowning the comment section in negativity. You live in Kentucky not Alaska, you’re not exactly in a prime spot for snow.
Invalid argument when places like northern Louisiana can get more snow than we do in one winter. Got anything else?
lol. So true!!!!!!!! Even more amazing is the fact that ElPaso , Texas gets more anual snow (at least the last couple of years) than anywhere in Kentucky or Tennessee.
Just emphasizing to the people here that we follow the trends, not eye candy models. Sense a little anger on your end, buddy
No anger on my end at all, “buddy.” Aaron, how often does Louisiana get dumped on? Show me their average snowfall, yearly totals and major winter storms within the last 20 years compared to Kentucky. If your claim proves to be accurate then I will gladly admit that you are correct.
December 6th and have had to underachievers in frankfort area, but better than nothing, still early folks, some places in KY are having their 3rd measurable snow event this year and maybe a 4th on the way!
Todd, at some point, the pattern will flip and then we have blowtorch warmth for January. Another dud of a winter dialed up folks
That remains to be seen, but one fact Foresure the pattern is not like the past 2 winters so far, I think before this winters over you will get plenty of snow no matter your local in KY!
I do feel your frustration in the lack of good snows consistently missing central and south east KY!
I have to agree with Todd. This pattern reminds me of 2002-2003 or 2009-2010. Both featured an ice/snow event in Early December followed by a good winter. Louisville set a record for snowfall today. Lexington set a daily record in November.
My five inches is more than last two winters put together. I really feel for those who missed out as it’s been a long time coming. This was an Ohio River storm for sure. Here is hoping that the trend has been broken here and hopefully for the rest of the state soon.
To add insult to injury for those who didn’t get their fix from this last system, it now apparently looks like the storm for Sat/Sun is not going to be as strong as initially predicted. Not surprised, not let down though, either. After so many model hypes and overforecasting for snow, especially in the Lexington/Richmond metro, I don’t expect much anymore. Conditioned to it.
Enjoy the bigger snows, those of you who have gotten it. I’ll do just fine without the ice.
I believe, through climate change or whatever, that big snows in this part of the state are very rare—by big I mean 6+ snows. It was odd that in the 70’s and then in the 90’s so many happened. Growing up in childhood, you kind of come to expect that later on. But I suppose Kentucky winters and their cycles are over a much longer period of time. It would be interesting to take a look in the history books to see the longest stretch of time prior to 1998-2013 to see if there is any other such 16 year break from a snowfall as large as that.
I’m going to retract my previous complaint about the lack of a watch for this area and apologize to the NWS; they had this pretty well tracked down earlier on. I’m just disappointed we haven’t had anything notable in the winter precip department here yet this year. It’s early, but it seems like the only thing anymore that would give us a good snow is a “fluke” or a “freak” storm. Really shameful…….
I think someone looked it up a couple years back, and this has been by far and away the longest snow drought (big 6″+) since records have been kept around here. It really has gotten to the point where we have to face the fact that big snow in this microclimate we now live in in CKY may well be a thing that lives on only in our memories, and in stories we tell our kids…
Neil, no disrespect to you, but I hope you are wrong—completely and utterly, wrong.
The lack of snow is not what I would call a “story to tell my kids.” The story to tell your kids is the big storms that hit; not the storms that didn’t. That’s all. I’m done here. >:(
I’m not suggesting we tell our kids about storms that didn’t hit. If you read carefully, what I said was the big snows live on only in memory and stories we tell our kids. And for the record, I hope I’m dead wrong, too.
Some people need to take a break from posting…..
Or reading
I know right?
You mean like the snow has? Looks like I’ll be an old man at that rate. 😉
Aww does the truth hurt? 😉
I’ve not been out to check, but it looks as though my area of Louisville received about 3 or inches of snow. I must admit I am surprised that much accumulated because these types of systems generally take longer to turn over to snow than the forecast projections suggest.
As for the future, I always pay the $20 per month in December and January to read Joe Bastardi’s thoughts on Weatherbell. After having been bullish for January, he raised the specter of 2005-2006. That year cold in December broke into a mega torch January. Mind you, he doesn’t think that’s going to happen, but he noted the long range models (JMA, CVS2) have shown something a bit warmer recently.
Just tossing that out there.
I’m not going to pay anybody anything to read anything weather-related around here. I think the reason alone is well enough to understand why.
My new model of confidence is the nam. It can’t even predict the weather while it’s happening live which was pretty much the case when Chris posted that snowfall map this afternoon showing Fayette and woodford county picking up 6 to 8 inches. Hard to believe anyone puts any confidence in any of them.
We had about a tenth of inch of ice followed by about a inch of snow in Lawrenceburg. A major storm no– but still the third snowfall of this season. Hoping for a 2009-2010 or 2010-2011 winter around here. In 2010 I had over 30 inches of snow (as did the official reporting station in Lexington).
I’m getting a feeling the Sat/Sun “event” will be an even bigger underperformer than today was in Lex.
The only way that verifies is if it just happens to have less moisture. At my house in Jessamine just south of the Lex metro, it was nothing but rain, followed by a very light glaze on elevated surfaces, followed by a few minutes of light sleet, for a grand total of the equivalent of a moderately heavy frost!
I agree Allen. I’m so done with getting my hopes up. I’m getting too old for this. I will just believe it when I see it from now on.
Quadruple overtime?? HAHAHAH!!!! Try 10+ areawide. That’s quadruple overtime.
Going to petition the government for taxes paid on weather services when they are unnecessary. Nothing to note here. Hm—money, money, money.
Chris Bailey does a great job and I hate to say this but I think his new name should be hype miester… He shows all these eye candy models to get page views and people talking… I know these things are hard to predict but my point is he constantly posts things like nam snow projections when he knows full well the model overdoes moisture all the time. Think I’m going to start listening to the voice of reason now…
Big household project today between hopkinsville and clarksville, got it done! Whatever helped we got the mattress in by 2 pm, bunk beds built by 7, and only one wet spot of paint to dry (weeping window) My grandchildrens christmas is complete (from gram and papaw anyway lol
Now if I can get a warm enough day to dry the carpet!
Thanks Chris for your updates!
