Good Tuesday everyone. We have finally arrived at a day many of us have been wanting to see for a few months now… a day of soaking rains! This is a potent storm that is moving across the state today and will bring a widespread rain event to go along with some gusty winds and a big temp swing.
Here are some headlines with this storm…
– Rain will be heavy at times today into this evening. Amounts will range from a half inch to as much as 2 inches for areas that get in on the heaviest rain.
– I do expect to see a narrow area of lower totals setting up somewhere across the central part of the state. This will be bracketed by higher amounts on either side. Even in this area of “lower” totals… this will be a nice soaker!
– There is the threat for some low topped thunderstorms across the eastern half of the state late this afternoon and evening.
– As the low cranks up over us and rolls to our northeast… winds will ramp up as well. Gusts to 30 or 40mph cannot be ruled out later today into the evening.
– Temps will spike up to near 60 in the far east while the west stays in the 40s for most of the day. As the low goes by to our north… temps will really drop off quickly.
– There is the SMALLEST chance of a wet snowflake mixing in on the back edge of the departing rain shield. This is especially the case across western Kentucky.
I have all the tools you need to track today’s wild and wet weather…

Just how desperately are we in need of rain? Take a look at an amazing map showing just how far behind we are on rainfall over the past 90 days…
Ok… since getting such a widespread rain event… let’s treat it like a snowstorm and give me some reports from your hometown.
I will update as needed… take care.

Guess we in Central KY should have expected lower totals. 0.09″ so far in Nicholasville at my house.
Chris, you nailed the track of this storm WAY before the local TV meteorologists had the guts to commit. Even as late as yesterday morning one of the Cincinnati stations was still waffling on the storm track. That’s why I keep coming back to this blog. Keep up the great work!
Rain started around 7 and has been light and steady. Chris, I hope I’m not it that narrow band of lower totals!
I agree with Paul above. That’s why I always come here for my weather forecasts too.
Thanks Chris!
I wonder if anyone in western ky. has seen any snowflakes this morning, I noticed the radar was showing it on a couple of its runs, and temps. are holding in the upper 30’s to around 40 also. while here in extreme south east ky. rain has let up for the moment and temps. are spiking into the low to mid 50’s with breaks in the clouds…
Chris, just wanted to let you know that it has rained here nearly all night, and woke me up a couple of times raining very hard.
this morning, it has been steady, with heavier showers at different times. Has not totally stopped all morning, though. At work, so I can’t get you a total from the rain gauge.
rained most of the night here, and is still raining. Temp is sitting at about 52 degrees at the moment.
Tried to post a minute ago, but was moderated–again! ~sigh~
Very cold wet rain here in Owensboro
Nice, steady rain outside my window here in SE Lexington. Has been this way all morning. A beautiful sight for sore eyes! Love it.
steady rain here in covington and 43 degrees. pretty miserable really. but we desperately need this rain.
Its raining here in Corbin… and about 50…
looks like a line of heavier rain and maybe thunderstorms are developing in southern ky and east tn. that will be rotating into east ky, and the virginia’s later on today. Radar is showing a well defined little storm moving right through the state. Cold, raw, rainy on the west and northwest side, and mild, breezy wet on the east and southeast side..
sev. thunderstorm warnings in s.tn. around chattanooga.
Rain has been falling light and steady for many hours now in Richmond. 🙂
What a perfectly rotten weather day. I LOVE it!!
Looking at that radar, I have to wonder to myself: Had this been January, would we be getting R A I N while western KY would be getting snow?
Dang, we’re about to get dry-slotted.
Every county around mine has gotten almost twice as much rain. Sigh. 🙁
Has Chris posted his winter forecast yet? Link?
Look at that line moving through eastern KY. Anybody getting lightning with that? Looks like there’s some wind with it too…
Bright and sunny in downtown lex right now. We were hammered with heavy rain from noon until 2:00.
Pouring the rain and strong wind; 61 in Letcher Co.
When that line came to Hazard just a little bit ago, we had high winds and lots of rain. But it moved through quickly with no thunder.
Wind is wild in Pikeville.Rain just starting.I had my cat out in his carrier and it almost blew him over before I got there.I felt like i was Dorothy in the Wizard here Toto.
Looks more like we would have gotten Domed!
Crazy temp gradient going on with this thing right now, too: near 40°F in WKY, while in Pikeville its near 70°F! Reminds me of the December ’04 storm, but with rain instead of snow. Hope this doesn’t end up being the dominant storm track for the winter, if so, from CKY eastward and southward, we are in for another disappointing one!
It appears the moisture is trying to wrap back around….but will it make it to central kentucky or die out?
Bubba, I think Chris said he would post his Winter Forecast some time next week.
Crystal do you have a facebook account if you do look me up Marsha Adkins i would love to talk to all you guys…..
Starting to get really nasty in Lexington with dark clouds and heavy wind.
Wind is cranking here at the Benchmark building at Winchester Rd and New Circle. Lights have even flickered a couple of times.
Wicked wind in Richmond. Wow!
The wind is getting hard core now in Lawrenceburg ahead of the backside of the precip. shield which is about to move in very soon. I’m seeing trash cans blowing down the street and trash everywhere. Hard to keep the Jeep between the lines…
Here comes the backlash rains in Central Kentucky! Another 2 to 3 hours of steady rain would be amazing!
those jeeps become sails, a tahoe with 4 bald tires is rough too
Sustained SW 21 MPH with gusts to 40 MPH at my house now..
This thing is bombing out right on top of us. We have to be getting 50-60 mph gust in Lex. Gonna be some damage.
