A new SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is out for parts of central and eastern Kentucky until 3am. Here’s a look with the latest warnings…
Good evening, all. A TORNADO WATCH is out for parts of central and western Kentucky through the evening. Isolated tornadoes and damaging winds of 70mph or higher are possible as a nasty line of storms races eastward.
This will impact Louisville within the next hour and then toward the Lexington metro by late evening. You can track the latest warnings in the current Tornado Watch..
That watch may be extended farther eastward with time.
In addition to the high wind and tornado threat… widespread flooding is ongoing across western Kentucky. Some areas have picked up more than 6″ of rain on the day.
Here we go with the rest of the tracking tools…
Rainfall
Current temperatures
Winds
Take care.
Looks like some ugly heading in to central KY! Thanks Chris
Wow, that was some crazy wind that just roared thru town. Still have power but it was a bit scary for a few minutes. Stay safe all.
Im in Louisville and we’re getting blasted with high winds and heavy rain! WOW
The noise was incredible. I could hear it coming.
Yes and it looks like we’re just going to keep getting it
Nashville and BG going to get hammered very soon.
This stuff means business folks in central and East KY, be weather aware! This might be the ugliest line of storms I’ve seen this entire year!
South central Kentucky looks to be in a prime zone for dangerous storms. The squall line will hopefully weaken before approaching the Somerset/London area
Whaddya know, today was actually a sorta blowtorch out there lol
Hit 71 in Lawrenceburg. I enjoyed grilling and wearing the shorts and flip flops. Too bad this will be the warmest day I see until–probably Mid-March.
Hamlin, your purpose here is to attack and make wise crack comments. Other than that, I don’t know what purpose you serve. You tell me….
Replace “Hamlin” with “Bryant” and your statement might be correct. 😉
You sure about that? I hardly ever see you contribute thoughts and ideas. Life must be boring in mom and dad’s basement.
And what do you contribute besides asinine ramblings which are not founded upon any sense of logical science that the average high for January will be 57?
I hope our friends in the west and all of Ky stay safe.I wonder if it will lose some of its punch as the night wears on?Thank Chris for all the updates.
Just seems crazy to be getting this bad of a severe event at Christmas. Looks like some folks will likely be without power for Christmas.. that’s terrible.
This reminds me of an event that came through December 27, 2008. High winds, heavy rains, temps near 70. Anyone remember what happened in Late January of 2009? I hope history does not repeat itself.
always weakens as it hit mountains, that said there be wind damage in pulaski, london areas even futher east.
Rolo–the mountain counties got the worst of it in March of 2012. An unusual event to say the least, but still–it happened once, it could happen again.
Hopefully this line will weaken significantly as it reaches Somerset and weaken even more still before reaching the London, Corbin, and Middlesboro areas as it “usually” does.
Ok i hate severe thunderstorms more than snow storms. I the storm weakens before approaching eastern Kentucky.
Hope?
Tornado near Nashville right now, this stuff is getting stronger as it moves east!
It’s KY, we’d never let a little thing like a winter solstice get in the way of our severe weather outbreaks.
Mercer, if you’re lurking atm, let me pick your brain on something. How many months did we see at least a severe watch this year? I swear, it seems like we now have this kind of weather event every month regardless of season.
After just checking the radar loop…

I’m lurking—looks like February, March and September were the only months that didn’t have significant severe weather in Central KY. I think March was colder than January so that explains that one.
Thanks, it certainly seemed as though it was a frequent occurrence this year.
Lol
Goodness, look at that line of storms! The wind here in Fayette Co is really blowing – sounds more like April than December! Does anyone know when it is supposed to hit McCreary Co? I have family in a rural and remote area there who live in a trailer, no less, and they always lose electricity with intense storms. I watch the radar for them and keep them updated via texting with info from here at KWC and Chris’ tweets, especially when it gets bad like this. Just to prepare for a rough evening, especially since I am not great at reading maps, etc, does anyone have any thoughts as to the storm and its impact on McCreary? I really, REALLY appreciate your help!
As it looks right now, I would say some strong storms, but I think McCreary still has about 2 or 3 hours before it hits.
Thank you so very much, Jeff! I really appreciate your help! I am going to call my family now and give them a heads up on what is coming their way. It helps having a timeline for when things may occur. Again, my thanks.
It all depends on how the squall line holds up. I’ll be staying awake until it hits here in Danville at least and can try to figure out more then.
I just got off the phone with my family and they are already on pins and needles over this! Ugh. I especially feel for all families that live in trailers during times like this! Jeff, I truly appreciate your help! Hearing your thoughts as it gets closer will be extremely helpful as I help keep them informed! Thank you so much!
Shelbyville just got nailed. Crazy, intense wind.
This line means business. Temp has risen from 67 to 72 as it approaches Lawrenceburg. 72 degrees at 11:00 P.M. on December 21…wow!
What a storm! Worst wind and rain I’ve seen in a few years. Temp has fallen from 72 to 64 in a few minutes.
I really DREAD this line coming through, especially since some of you are emphasizing the “wow”
UGGGHHH
About 45 mph wind just in frankfort, thankfully calming down a bit now, heavy rain for about 10 minutes!
I had a wind gust of 60 in Lawrenceburg. Strongest wind I’ve seen in the four years I’ve lived in this house! Hope everyone stays safe tonight. This line means business!
Crazy winds coming into west lexington
Yea – that line is crazy……..but so far, I have seen much worse than this in the past.
The crazy thing is how local these storms can be. During the tornado outbreak of 2012, I could literally see the neighborhood across the way getting pounded by large hail. We didn’t even get a drop of rain at my house. Almost everyone say–300 yards north and west of me had to have their roofs replaced. I had worse weather tonight than I had in March of 2012.
Looks like some heavy rain to set in overnight? Some areas of Kentucky have seen over 5 inches of rain already today! I have recorded .80 inches in less than an hour. Just think if this was snow!
Central Kentucky Law
33 and above rain
32 and below dry
Pea to nickel sized hail in Marehaven/Masterson’s Station area of Lexington.
The wind rearranged my backyard fairly well!
Strummer I would have your family be ready for strong winds and heavy rain.
Thank you so much, Jeff! I will call them now!
I love the timings given on the storm warnings, they expire before it even arrives in Berea. Rain finally starting, still looking about 10 min out.
Still waiting here in greenup…it’s crazy out the temps spike up
Right before the line comes through
This was nothing like 2009 when we had vicious winds about a month after the ice storm. Lost my power for that and the ice.
The wind destroyed my sons wooden club house that cost me $1,500…. Very very very small scale though to the losses of folks in 2012.
Unreal wind blowing in Irvine as of 12:30.
Winds roaring through the hills up here on the ridge in greenup
Power out here in greenup
Complete non-event in Berea, rain has even been just moderate. No complaints!
Hope everyone stays safe.
I believe we just had a gust front come through Quicksand, which is in Breathitt County. Hard wind about 10 minutes ago, now it is finally raining.
