Good Sunday afternoon, all. We are enjoying a gorgeous January day here in the bluegrass state. Sunny skies and mild temps are giving your friendly weatherdude thoughts of spring. Alas, those are just thoughts and reality settles back in over the next few days. A series of clippers will usher in the return of winter.
The first system arrives on Monday and it looks wet. A cold front drops in from the northwest as low pressure develops and works to our south and east. Rain will become likely and it’s possible it ends as a few flakes Monday night.
That sets the stage for a vigorous clipper to work in late Tuesday into Tuesday night. This one is interesting to me as it may have a squall line of snow along the front. The NAM is even spitting out thundersnow with this!
The Hi-Res NAM simulated radar is showing the potential squall line that’s followed by snow showers and squalls diving in from the northwest…
The Canadian Model has a similar look of a line of snow…
All of that will be followed by a strong northwesterly wind flow into Wednesday. That means a continuation of snow showers and a few squalls…
The next clipper arrives by the end of the week with another snow chance…
This is going to be a VERY windy week as these cold shots pour in. Teachers and kiddos… I do expect a few school delays and cancellations for the week ahead. 🙂
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and take care.
Sunny and 48 in Lawrenceburg. Back to back days in the 50’s? The blowtorch is back for a day or two.
Let ‘er rip! Sooner or later, the southern stream will come back!
It’s never left!!!!! It’s a stream of rain. I know your saying a southern stream for snow,,,but it’s not working anymore for snow
Thanks Chris. Sounds like I’m gonna need to drag out the long johns again…. Oh well it IS January…. Have a great Sundsy, everyone!
thanks Chris!
a beautiful Sunday and looking forward to tracking some SNOW and cold in the weeks to come.
maybe the elusive big ONE?
let’s hope!
oh, and thanks to Coffeelady – always a nice and positive post!
Sounds like a lot of flurries snow showers for cky. 1/2 in for Richmond!!!!!!!
Maybe you should try decaf.
Not sure what u mean?
Coffee in hand–given a toast for us all for alot of snow. But I’m just saying that cky will most likely see light 1/2 in of snow . And I hate getting of school for that!
BF was being sarcastic. CB knows 99.99% of folks that go to this blog are snow fans. It is probably hard to conjure a positive post vibe given our diabolical trends.
CB, all I ask is please refrain too much on the “polar vortex”, since seem a LOT of the media are positive spinning that to their GW agenda. Which is ironic, since in the 70’s they blamed the same exact thing on GC. That is a wild thing that can be blamed on literally EVERYTHING- dry, wet, snow, ice, wind, no wind and also PV.
Oh and if hot warm or cold as well. EVERYTHING!
Uh oh, CB, you’re getting your teacher viewers a little more excited that we already are during possible snow weeks. It would actually be ok if we went a little while before more snow days, but if you are to have an “extreme” winter, many snow days are in the cards. Remembering a series of clippers a few years ago that kept us out of school in SE KY for days and days. Most local schools systems missed more than 20 days that year. Repeat Performance Coming???? Enjoy the sunshine, everyone!
thats bc u guys call off school for a dusting
That’s because people litigate for a dusting
if these Clippers can’t perform, it is obvious that snow is becoming more and more irrelevant as times move on here in Kentucky.
The winters of 2009/10 and 2010/11were among the snowiest on record for much of the state.
Louisville totals for those two winters were 21.3 inches and 17.3 inches, both well above the yearly average of 12.5 inches. In early March of 2008 I had a 14 inch snowfall at my house.
Yes, but for most of us, small ankle biters or less. just a lot more of them 😉 Not one of those snow was big enough to create a 1/10 scale small childlike snowman replica. At least not for the quad city f snow grief (Berea, Lexington, Richmond and Winchester).
Last decent snow at one time was a clipper five years ago now.
I think it was 2009 our last good clipper?
March 5, 2012, a clipper brought 5-6 inches in Lexington.
When was the last time CKY (Versailles )had a snow deep enough to take your kids sledding, with the exception of Chris Mercers neighborhood which continues to be a meteorological anamoly with its common 5 and 6 inch snows ( funning with you Mercer, ease Er down) . We’ve had lots of inch and a halfers that melt!away the same day they come.
I want a real reason to buy extra bread and milk from krogers.
I moved here from Houston in 2008, there has yet to be a winter I did not have at least one day to go sledding in Lexington. Most of those years I went on multiple occasions. This is the first year I haven’t yet.
Thanks Chris for the updates! I visit here several times a day!
Will the snow chances affect us here in Wayne County, Chris?
Very nice day in Frankfort , sunny and 50 degree weather a nice change, but snow would be nice this week if we can get it!
It’s a case of being careful of what you wish for. Several years ago (2010-11), our kids missed a TON of school that Winter here in Laurel County. As a result, the school year extended well past Memorial Day and into mid June. Since the opening day is early to mid August here, summer vacation was VERY short that year.
I remember teaching on Saturday due to so many snow days! I don’t really want a repeat of that. I am just like the rest, though, I love it when snow is anticipated. Thanks for the updates, Chris. I check this site often, and I appreciate your dedication to those of us who love all things weather.

I don’t see him on the list.
You folks can reminisce, but not seeing how a bunch of small 1″ and 2″ snows makes up a great snow year. Those snows are nothing but dangerous to drive in annoyance that crust stuff with salt.
How the mighty bog has fallen. We used to talk big snow, but now through the years of wimpy snow event trends, folks now refer to “The Year of the Ankle Biters” as something special. It was, mainly for a lot of school days missed, accidents and salt- lots of salt.
Bigger snow or bust, since they actually have fun value beyond the snow globe effect and tend to be safer for being on the road. Can make REAL snowmen too 🙂
BTW, to this day, I still find calling events in the winter, “wintry” very ironic. I understand, but still find it ironic.
So a Summery Week ahead would be Sun and 90’s..Hope we have a few Summery weeks this Summer….
But right now I will take a Wintery Week…
Think Snow!!!
Precisely my point. Even the 80’s is summery 🙂
Thanks Chris for your expert opinion and thoughts about what may happen. That being said I have been coming to this site now for a few years and I must say I have never seen so much negativity about weather especially snow. As soon as Chris gives his thoughts on what May happen, someone who is not a trained met basically says Chris is wrong and this is what’s going to happen. Chris makes weather fun, he is not someone who downplays snow because he’s afraid of it or don’t like it he takes chances and sometimes he’s wrong but a lot of the times he is right. Thanks Chris for keeping me and my family weather aware.
This winter season has definitely been the worse I’ve seen as far as the constant negative comments go. It really gets old. If you don’t like what CB has to say, then go somewhere else!
true.
Thought the comments tonight have been fairly take.
tame
Compared to most times when snow is in the forecast, you are right.
always hyping up the next storm…that ends up being a dusting at best
Troll
OK, CB, when you say you expect school cancellations later in the week, is that for Lexington area??? That is parent eye candy and I’m in SE/KY and hope this will get us some additional snow days, lol! Thanks for all you do, it’s greatly appreciated!
Throw a dart at a map of Kentucky and you’ll be as close to knowing who gets snow and cancellations as anybody.
Hope for the snow just no school closing a. Kids here in charleston are still out of school as we still have no water.
Just happy CB keeps us posted on what may happen, while I do love snow and pray we get a good old school snow at some point, it bugs me to come to the site year after year and see people bash CB when it’s clearly not his fault the snow don’t hit us. People please be nice , it’s not like he can change the weather or the models and what they say
