Good Wednesday everyone. The middle of the work week is upon us and we find ourselves positioned between two systems. The one to our west will surge through here on Thursday with showers and some thunderstorms and usher in a nice shot of cool/chilly air to end the week. This is all part of an active October pattern that will try to take on the look of a winter one next week.

In the short term… the storm bringing rain to eastern Kentucky will slowly pull away with a drying trend setting in. A mix of sun and clouds will be noted with temps in the upper 60s to low 70s for many with the west in the high 70s to near 80. A stray shower or storm is possible in the far west.

Follow today’s weather…

The next system will quickly work in from the west on Thursday. Showers and thunderstorms will move across the state with locally heavy rains a good bet. Winds are going to gust up as the front blows through by the end of the day. Highs will generally stay in the 60s, though a 70 is possible in the east before the rains move in.

Friday will feature the threat for some showers hanging around across the eastern half of the state. A chilly wind will blow from the northwest and highs will struggle to get to 60 in the north and east with mid 60s in the west.  Here is the European Model with this quick hitting system…

The weekend will see a rebound in temps with mid and upper 60s Saturday and low 70s for Sunday.

Next week will start windy and warm with highs in the 70s for Monday. This is ahead of a big change that gives the weather maps more of a wintry look with a deep trough in the eastern half of the country. This allows for the coldest air of the season to dive into many areas.

The models have a strong cold front swinging in on Tuesday with widespread rains. As the front moves to our east, it begins to slow down as a wave of low pressure develops along it. This is very much a wintertime setup and the latest GFS continues to show this very well…

Here is the how the European Model sees it…

Both have a similar idea on how this whole thing evolves. What does that mean for us? A few random thoughts…

– It’s a week away, so don’t get too excited.

– A cold rain is the most likely scenario as the snow odds are not very good this time of year. Still… this is an extreme weather year, so anything is possible.

– Cold and windy weather with a hard frost or freeze is possible after the storm moves away.

This is yet another example of a deep trough digging into the eastern part of the country. That is a fall pattern that simply cannot be ignored for the winter ahead and is very likely a sign of things to come.

I will have an update later today, so check back. Have a great Wednesday and take care.
