Good evening, gang. This is an ice storm in progress across much of the state. The colder air is winning the battle and we’re not getting any kind of push of milder temps anywhere but far southeastern Kentucky. Some areas have already picked up .25″ of ice and we will continue to see totals climb.
I would not be surprised to see some areas north of I-64 with a half to one inch of ice. That would be enough to cause significant issues for trees and power lines.
Here’s a look at the current advisories and warnings…

how come the cold air never wins when we need snow.
Freezing Rain coming down heavily in Lawrenceburg/Anderson County area. Satellite signal has gone out due to the ice.
Mercer county/Burgin power flickering off now. Crud.
Where do you live in Burgin? I am on main and so far so good.
Out by KU power plant on the lake. On now but flickering. Crud. Deck and surfaces completely frozen. No idea how the roads are around here. Anyone else know- Burgin/danville/Harrodsburg? Not going out but wondering for how overnight will help/hurt roads.
Wish the current tempature map was working
It is absolutely pouring in Versailles!! If this is all ice like the radar shows we’re in line for power outages! I hope that’s not the case but……
This is a excert from the NWS forcast discussion so I’m counting on it holding true….
Bigger rain drops and heavier rainfall rates tend to negate the freezing factor despite sfc temps below freezing. So as this axis of heavier rain moves east over the area through the evening hours, expect conditions to improve some for a time. However, expect icing to continue in light freezing rain on either side of the moderate rain.
Raining as well 1 mile south of the BG parkway in Versailles. Lots of ice, trees are sagging. If my power goes off we are coming to your house.
Come on MikeM!! We’re on the same grid as Kroger so if we do go down it won’t be long. The have to keep Kroger going!
Roads are absolutely terrible here in greenup
In Rush let the dogs out and they went sliding off the porch!!! Would rather have the rain than the freezing rain 🙁
So funny ..well sad really, that Greenup/Boyd Counties are not in the ice storm warning, however, I have friends in those two places and they are talking about the freezing rain/sleet/ice that is coming down. They are still marked as a flood watch and WWA. Think someone wasn’t paying attention…
I’m not sure what is coming down in Louisville (freezing rain, sleet), but there’s a lot of it. Hoping my power stays on.
Cool no flood advisory
Andy…any freezing precipitation where u r in knox?
Um not at 40 degrees no
Cricket we are in the tropics here in this part of the state. The cold rain always wins out. This time I am glad.
I am in clay..and the temperature is 37..no precipitation right now!
this is no lie, my porch thermometer shows 54 right now in Harlan county.
Re-post from the earlier blog entry. Glad CB is acknowledging the ice storm even if our local mets and NWS aren’t…
So my local news and weather come out of Louisville and like always, those counties southwest of Jefferson are an afterthought. I just watched two local mets completely downplay the fact that power is off in part of Breck county due to icing. The power outages are 15 miles west of me. Our local radio station in Hardin county went off the air because of icing. It’s like being in an ice storm in a vacuum. Maybe the warm air surge will change everything to rain at midnight but does that really matter if the power is out? It’s still 30 here. Still freezing rain. Still icing everything, including my snow-filled gutters. I have Niagara Falls pouring over my garage doors trying to form icicles on the way down. I know most of the posters on here are east of me. Just an FYI about what’s going on at this end. Winter storm warning was accurate for Hardin county. Probably should have been an ice storm warning.
I’m not very skilled at measuring ice but we have around .20″ here.
If it were daylight and if I was in a poetic mind and if I had not gone through two ice storms and if there was not going to be such damage….dismissing all those if’s…bet it is a world of intense beauty out there, cold, wet and icy beauty! Ahhh, the POWER of nature–
Temperature keeps rising here in Louisville. I’m up 2 degrees at my house in the last hour, standing at 32 degrees. Roads are fine here, just wet with a little slush on the side ones. It looks like we are about to transition to just plain rain. Fine with me.
So CB is incorrect about the cold and warm air battle perhaps? That would not be bad if so.
Don’t really see how cb is incorrect on this. Still @ 31 at bowman field, and been hovering at this mark all day. Suburbs will be even a little cooler. If anything, I think his forecast has been the most accurate as even Wave says we’ll stay cooler than expected now. That being said, here’s hoping we have less ice. On mobile so apologize for any typos.
Ice mix in Richmond still. The demise of ice might be greatly exaggerated.
I’m in the city so it’s probably a degree or so warmer than outlying areas. I have ice on trees, power lines and fences but just slush on the ground. My car has ice on the trunk but the rest of the car is just wet. No ice hanging off of gutters so that’s good. A check of Weather Underground weather stations around the metro shows several 33 degree readings, even across the river.
I think with marginal temps and the rate of rainfall (lots of runoff and no chance to freeze on objects) we have so far dodged a bad ice storm. Still a ways to go so don’t want to jinx things. I’m all for warm air in ice storms.
I am hoping it warms and prefer CB to be wrong on this one 😉
Yes I think warm air may be just enough to save us from mess. It sure is a cold rain though
Was afraid if this for a few days and have been harping about it. Looks like areas that got decent to good snow are getting smacked (other area too). Since Richmond is also getting ice rain, north of us must be Smackcity. That snow is an ice magnet with colder air in place.
Let us hope CB gets the air battle wrong and warm air valiantly wins the fight! Then again, warm air is the reason we are getting ice instead of snow…. Warm air is playing for both sides. Double agent.
Bubba,
What do you see for us here in between Morehead and Ashland? Seems like freezing rain right now and everything is covered in ice!
Should be mainly ice, unless you can get heavy rain to offset the accumulation some. Not cold enough for the accumulation to sustain if heavy rain.
Thanks Bubba, that’s what I’m afraid of. Everything is iced over and still coming down at a good pace. Rain line is so close to us, but the freezing rain is keeping it just south of us. Do you see it warming up tonight? I don’t think CB does..
He is the met, so go with his view. The NWS though is saying the temps are not cold enough for the ice to accumulate with heavier rain. They apparently think heavy rain is moving in tonight.
So during the last system this weekend my county (mercer) was in “the zone” for 4-10 inches of possible snow. Got sleet for hours and a skiff of snow at most. Right now in the WWA area and freezing rain is unbelievable and power flickering off. Ky winter stinks. I knew it did, but this just absolutely reinforces the weather insanity here.
Thanks for all the hard work CB!!! We have seen all precip types in Jtown. And ice has accumulated on everything thus far. Hoping temps spike so we don’t lose power!
Cold cold rain here in Pulaski Co. 34 degrees now. Next county (Lincoln) has ice from what I am reading. I feel lucky on this one. Stay safe everyone. Prayers for all affected by this nasty storm.
It just keeps coming down in Burgin. Everything is covered in ice.
Yep. Not looking good here is it Joyce? Tree out front had multiple six inch ice spikes hanging from it.
MoMom my power is ok so far… But this is not looking so good for us.
1,600 customers without power between Richmond Rd. and Man-O-War Blvd.
.30 inches of ice in Hopkinsville and still raining.
Was out driving in Hoptown earlier. Roads are mostly wet with some flooding but trees and power lines are covered with thick ice.
C’mon warmer temps! This Casey Countian didn’t prepare (milk and bread 😉 ) for ice storm. I want my ALL rain I was forecasted 🙁
We can not win. We do not get snow when forecast, but get ice when not forecast. Hoping for a slight warm up too.
Power is flickering south of Man O’ War off of Richmond in Lexington.
Thanks, Chris! Looks like another day off school? Already filled the first week of June. Anymore goes in to the second week.
cars, trees and power lines are covered in ice here in Flatwoods (greenup co) temp 31 deg
Don’t think its doing much of anything here.Misted rain off and out this evening but nothing at the moment.Weather site has had the temp at 35 or 36 degrees all day and night. My thermometers on the front and back porch have stayed on 30 degrees all day and are the same now.
Slight wind that feels quiet cold.Really not sure what to think is going to happen here in Laurel county.
What is the criteria for the ice falling and power outages, roads covered in ice…. WWA?
Cauley stein!!!!!!!
He played like FrankenStein! A monster!
FrankenStein better show up against Florida too.
A little confused that Louisville hasn’t been upgraded to an Ice Storm Warning, given that the NWS is now officially calling for .5-.6″ of ice in the metro area. Anyone know what the reasoning behind this might be, as that certainly fits criteria. NWS forecast graphic issued at 8:45 below:
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/images/lmk/pdf/Winter4Feb2014-Tue845PMbrief.pdf
Mercer county in under a WWA.. and we have ice that just keeps falling…
The WWA for Mercer County should probably be upgraded to a WSW at this point as well, as it looks like the event will also end with freezing rain in that area.
According to Belski, they also just said the 32 degree mark at Louisville Int’l was the result of the heat island, with the next closest freezing mark in Campbellsville, so if outside the city, expect ice accumulations to continue. Wish me luck, I’ve had the power cut off 3 times in the last 30 minutes, hoping not to lose it for good.
The ice is getting pretty thick on the trees here… Hearing power is out in parts of the county.
Some tress and branches have already fallen in Richmond…. Boo! Trees always win wrestling matches with power lines. A literal Power Slam.
trees
On cue, the WWA for Mercer County has been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning. We’ll see if any Ice Storm Warnings follow, but I doubt it.
Bardstown is getting SLAMMED w/ HEAVY Frz. Rn.! 🙁 It’s been coming down moderately hard since about 6:30-7pm or so…thought it was just “regular rain”(lol!) until a few min’s ago, let the dogs out, and the dogs came in with (literally, no lie!) ICE starting to form on their coats!? Had no trouble getting the ornery 2 back inside tonight!! 😉 It’s getting bad out there, folks….Internet was out for about 15 min’s, then DISH went out, still out…
In Richmond, more ice tonight, than snow all week. So far this winter: One snow of more than two inches and three or four heal nippers… Hmmm… Call it regression to the mean.
No extrapolation preparation needed. This is just plain old mean 😉 …….. 🙁
branches starting to fall here under the weight of ice in Jeff. County KY
branches falling here too in Valley Station. Have 0.25″ ice accumulation.
Heavy Freezing rain still in frankfort, ready for this to move out of town before power issues start!
power is out in Danville right now due to a blown transformer in the Rolling Hills area.
Steady ice rain and 31 degrees here — we’re about a mile south of I-64 in Woodford Co. We can hear it hitting the windows! Everyone be safe!
Sitting at 30 with heavy freezing rain in Lawrenceburg. The snowpack is now down to about 3 inches. Not too worried about power outages–made it ok here in 2009, and this won’t be worse than that–but still–a nasty night. Bet a bunch of Rupp goers are shoveling out cars.
Sleet, sleet, and more sleet in Boone County near the river.
Setting at 41 in knott co
Power is flickering on and off here.
Still icin’ here in Linconl. My outside lite was iced. I gave it two good whacks with a lawnmower blade. The second one nearly cut it in two. It don’t work no more. But it ain’t got no ice on IT!
Still freezing rain like crazy in Etown. Trees are looking heavy with the ice.
9:15 Current power outages from LG&E:
Jefferson- 4, 292
Bullitt- 1,527
Hardin- 11
Hart- 7
Oldham 81
Just looked out after the game WOW!! ITS ROUGH!! in NE Garrard.
First, you people kill me with your reports AND YOU DON’T SAY WHERE YOU ARE. D***n. Are we telepathic?
Second, just heard the first transformer blow up in Lansdowne in Lexington.
Third, there is so much moisture on the way. If the low coming over doesn’t bring in some warmth, we are gonna get killed in Lexington. It’s been pouring freezing rain since 5:30.
Another 2003? I lived in the Landsdowne area then. Awful time!
Holy freaking s**t.
I stated that earlier too LOL
I am using my telepathic skills now……….. I sense you live in the Lansedown area of Lexington. Bam I’m good 🙂
Let us hope it warms a tad and the heavier rain slows the accumulation.
What is the NWS trying to prove by not upgrading?
I think they are banking on heavier rain to move and null some of the accumulation.
The. Voice of reason said the same thing a few minutes ago.
Gives me less confidence that that will really happen.
Just as I said earlier today the airport is at 33 in Louisville but you go 500 yards from the airport and temperature is between 30-32. Now why is that?!? Anyone? Anyone? Its because of the always bias jet planes coming and going airport that whoever thought it was a great idea to take a accurate temperature. Unreal!! Take the official temp from the NWS office how hard is that? How can you get a accurate reading of snow from a airport thats surrounded by coming and going with boeing 747’s 727’s jet air planes? You can’t.
You’re onto something….Plus all the concrete and lights! Not a natural place to take official temperatures
Belski’s harped on this for years, not sure what their commitment to it is, or who has a stake in it, but meteorologically, it seems to be one of the least productive places you could possibly take an official temp at. Not trying to bash the NWS Louisville in the least, I think they do an awesome job around our parts, and have some of the most informative forecast discussions around. That has never made sense though.
Just lost power in Worthington Hills (NE Louisville) and we have underground utilities. Transformers were lighting up in the distance.
Going to be a real fun night.
Prayers sent.
We are “suppose” to have rising temperatures according to wsaz Tony no worry I do worry. In carter co sounds like its raining but its 31 and looks to be freezing didnt have a winter weather advisory until very late afternoon. Weather channel doesn’t mention rising temperatures low 31 significant icing possible. Why bother telling anyone now? Thanks Chris you are only one I rely on you know what are national weather center is like here
I honestly don’t listen to anything WSAZ has to say. I’m not trying to be mean but when it comes to weather, they are a joke anymore!
“…MAY begin as a brief period of freezing rain…” Per WSAZ…
My tree limbs are snapping in my yard here in Richmond…. Sounded like a shot gun going off… Not good at all!
Bad day. Internet’s been out all day, so I haven’t been able to keep up with the latest. Satellite went out about an hour and a half ago. My gutters are running over. Limbs are falling. Power is beginning to flicker. My dog is pretty sick. And I’m not going to work in this tonight. 0.25″ ice and not much end in sight.
Hope your pooch gets better soon.
Going through Lancaster a bit ago. Main roads seem fine. Saw a blue flash, transformer I guess. Trees and power lines absolutely coated with ice. Creeks near my house are over the banks. Flooding seems like it will be an issue.
Well–I think the NWS better upgrade most of Central KY to an Ice Storm Warning. Not seeing much sleet/snow to cut into ice totals. Yes, it is near freezing. That might keep the roads clear, but what about power lines, trees, etc? The criteria for an Ice Storm Warning is .25 inches of ice or greater. I think most of Central Kentucky north of 64 with exceed that with ease!!
Chris, Burgin has so much ice… Some places are losing power… It is bad here. They just upgraded us to a wsw. I would say ice storm warning would be more like it.
Just saw that too. Sooooooo, is the warm up nit coming? Roads may be fine but criteria seems to match ice storm.
Not….not nit.
I have underground utilities where I live in Lawrenceburg, but I used to live in Salvisa. I know how easy it is to lose power. If folks are losing power in Mercer County, this is ice storm warning criteria.
I think many of us already have!! This is crazy.
It does look like heavier rains coming in to south kentucky
Any ideas when the professionals say the warm temps will take over? Radar looks awful. Mercer county in the thin “WWA” area is a mess. So, if the expected warm i keep racing about is coming, it better come soon. By the way Bubba, feel bad for you down there. Getting more freezing rain than expected that way?
Reading….not racing. Ugh…..darn autocorrect.
Still doing nothing here.A slight wind and that is about it.Looking at the radar wondering if we are actually going to get a lot of rain or if it could change to ice or snow more south than is predicted.Outside thermometers are still setting on 30 as they have been most the day but online site is saying its 35.
I am wondering same think it seems like snow line is trying to into Pulaski county
This storm is a beast covers several states the national radar is impressive. the low doesn’t seem to want to move looks like a conveyor belt of moisture from the gulf
Lots of rain here in Wolfe County. Temps at or near freezing, but no sign of freezing rain or ice so far, (9:45 pm, 4 Feb)
Winds gusting to near 20mph in frankfort might cause more problems, hearing reports 3/4 inch Ice in western KY!
Wow 6 inches of snow Sunday nite here now ICE! Mega winter in Frankfort area this year!
Same in Lawrenceburg. I have 30 degrees. What is the temp in Frankfort?
31
Im happy somebody is getting winter weather
Andy–this is not something to be happy about. I keep hearing reports out of Fayette, Jefferson, Shelby, Hardin counties of multiple power outages. Would rather join you in the tropics of SE Kentucky than have to deal with this :). That being said, my underground utilities are serving me well so far!
Hope you guys make it ok
Andy, you just aren’t right in the head to be happy people are getting an ice storm.
Andy complained that he didn’t get in on the devastating ice storm in January 2009. He really needs to get a life.
I agree! I can see Andy not working a paying job, just sitting back letting someone else supporting him while he plays on a computer or an internet capable phone. It’s doubtful that he has any friends by the way he acts on here. I have read that he has children but he acts like a child himself because all he does is whine and complain. In reality I would say he is close to his mid 40’s and in his own mind he thinks he is a genius. This is just my personal opinion.
Western KY is a mess!!!! Limbs down, power outages, ugh!
Stay safe.Sounds like I need to be happy that I am getting nothing..Actually I am glad for that..A couple of inches of snow is the most I ever need to consider it a successful winter snow.
Not as bad as 2009 I hope! I was in Western KY then–ugly, situation.
what does it really matter what kind of advisory or warning you are under?? its gonna ice/snow or whatever ….people complaining about that doesnt make any sense at all…it doesnt matter at all
It matters a lot if you have to travel.Ice is terrible to deal with compared to snow or rain. Its a good idea to know whats coming if you have to be out in it.
Like button pressed
Actually it makes a big difference for people who rely on such things to determine travel plans and the like. Not everyone is savvy enough to check blogs like this one. People who rely on WLEX, for example, for weather forecasts are sunk on nights like tonight.
And people like me who provide medical care need to know if we can get to our clinics/patients or if we need to spend the night, etc. Although weather will do what it wants, knowing if ice or electricity is in danger affects how some can get to others/provide care/make emergency preparedness.
Temp is up to 32 – 33 in Louisville. It is fluctuating. It appears just enough warmth to dodge a bullitt. Anyone disagree and think worst is yet to come?
I agree with you. Another hour or so and it will be out of here.
Roads are wet. Power lines and trees are ice covered.
Stay safe, everyone! Just saw a HUGE power transformer explosion next to elementary school which is across from where I live!
Which is…..?
Squire Elementary school.
Heard that too over here at manowar and Armstrong mill
Looks like there are a couple flood warnings in southern ky now
Not for the eastern part i was told by Chris he wasnt concerned about flooding
Chris on the FOX news just put most of Central KY into the “up to .75 inches” of ice category. That is getting serious. He even pointed out the roads would be ok at these temp (which I agree) but the trees and power lines would be in bad shape.
Over 7,600 LGE customers now in Jefferson County. My power has flickered a few times. A large outage in nearby Pleasure Ridge Park is affecting over 2,300
Where is the Low currently at??
Over Rolo 😉
CB is saying we will not get the warmer air in the heavy ice areas.
Would love to know what so many schools are waiting for. Freezing rain, high water, etc and still no word. Awful night out there
Repeat of the infamous Lexington ice storm. Good luck folks. Hope the power stays and everyone is safe. The wife and I just got out of the pool here in southeast Florida, I mean Kentucky. Enjoying the tropics down here. Might even plant me a grove of palms come spring
This is not as bad as February 2003 in Lexington. Don’t scare folks with that kind of declaration. I lived in Lexington then. We had lower temps and a longer, prolonged period of precipitation
The biggest difference between now and 2003 is that the 2003 storm destroyed a ton of trees. That was what saved a lot of people in the 2009 storm as well. We lost a ton of trees/branches in those two storms that aren’t around to lose now. If this keeps up a few more hours (as it is supposed to) the ice could easily reach the same amounts it did those two years…
Honestly, I can maybe see one post like this to vent some frustration, but give it a rest already!
Amen to that.
Just had a tree come down on top of my precious fish pond and waterfall! I’m not happy!!!
Looks like rain taking over on the radar in the south west part of the state…..sure hope that is true and coming this way in NE Garrrard. How much ice did we have in the last big ice storm? I think it was 08-09?
It might be falling as rain, but I would go to bet it’s still freezing when it hits the trees/power lines as the temps in Paducah are still at below freezing.
I was afraid someone would say that.
Frz. Rn. still coming down @ a fast clip in Bardstown/Nelson Co….waiting for our power to go (surprised it hasn’t already, from the looks of things/how it usually is?!)
Stay safe out there tonight. Luckily only going to be rain (again) here in the SE part. My one week of “winter left” countdown has begun. If we are shut out again down here in the corner, then I’m officially moving into SPRING mode. Had enough of the cold with no snow winter.
Our snow will probably come as a big surprise in March.
No electric in Eastern Clark Co. It’s been out about 45 min. so far.
I do see an end finally. Perhaps another hour or hour and a half. Before my internet went down this morning, the Rapid Refresh model showed precip moving into Louisville by 5pm. Total precip was expected to be 0.44″, most of that being ice.
Huge plume, and I mean huge plume of moisture coming out of the Gulf….all the way back into Mississippi. What do the next few hours hold? Question for the experienced blog folks?
CB said that is heading our way.
I agree…This is not over by a long shot
Hearing reports of power outages here in greenup county
Still freezing rain here in Carter County. Temp at 31
It’s really coming down here in greenup!
Power outages reported here also.
I’m in Carter County Nancy and I can’t tell if it’s raining or freezing rain. Looks like rain but feels and sounds like freezing rain. Have you heard of power outages around here?
Freezing rain is rain that just freezes on contact..check the surfaces to see if they are ice covered
Side walk is fine, but cars, trash cans and everything else is covered in ice.
*are fine*
Direct Tv losing signal in Southeast Lexington due to the ice. CB was about the only one forecasting this a week ago. I do not trust anyone else. Same as the snow even 2 nights ago. I think these other mets need to go to the Chris Bailey school of weather forecasting. Thanks for the heads up CB.
He’s the wonderful wizard of winter
Went out on my front porch in NE Garrard to check on things and heard trees falling.
Air temp is 33 in East Morehead… Rain is still freezing to every surface… My sidewalk continues to ice, tree limbs are cracking, gutters literally torn off the house (from a huge sheet of snow/ice sliding off). Spring!
Luckily still
Have power and electric here on w hollow in greenup
Come on warmer air soon, beginning to sound like forth of July with transformers exploding and tree branches falling
NWS just updated Carter County to WSW.. Hmmm
my daughter just called, power out in Morgan County near Mize.
Guess I just answered my own question… Carter County is now under a WSW. Yuck!
MECK still saying above freezing is coming, and Lexington is 33 now??
Greenup just updated to a wsw as well
South central ky as usual got nothing but lots of rain. Stayed right at 34 all evening:(
Count your blessings
CB still the best, Others are saying…”Not a big deal warmer temps. Really?? Trees, down Power out, Flooding etc Please go away others.
Wsaz is hilarious..tony just came on with the weather and mentioned NOTHING about the wsw..so sad
Oh I am so with you Corey!!! Elevated icing????? What a joke!!
No power at my house now 🙁
Power went off and on several times in north Madison. Expecting the inevitable tonight. If Meck is wrong, I am staying at his house and sitting on his couch in my underwear, while eating a giant wedge of cheese.
LOL. I needed a good laugh. I’m not sure how he can be so bad at what he does. I think at this point he just tries to say the opposite thing Chris does. In any case, blue flashes all over the place now where I live 30 mins south of Lex, plenty of limbs coming down, and lots and lots of water. I guess the silver lining is that this is only partial freezing rain and not a full-on freezing rain.
No… got a BAD mental image there.. lol
Bubba that is my favorite post by you…..EVER.
Hahaha I just love bubba…I needed a good laugh while sitting here in the dark :/
14000 out of power in Louisville.
Just made my commute home from the game… Roads in Lexington aren’t horrible, but are definitely worth slowing down for… the main problem that I observed was the stress on the trees and overhead lines. If you have to be out tonight… be aware of your surroundings as your greatest threat may loom overhead… Everyone have a safe night…. It is beautiful though!!!!
Reports of outages all
Over greenup
Whoa. Just heard a thump outside of my house. Another small limb fell out of the tree. That’s not what made the thump sound. The power line that goes to my house was still whipping, I guess from the limb. I’m surprised I didn’t just lose power now. I noticed the wind has been getting stronger.
Power is out at the house
Quick comment on weather forecasting – it can’t be done, at least according to my old book on Chaos theory. Too many variables, too much chance. Obviously the fact that some forecasters do it much better than others means there’s still a lot of skill and hard work involved, but there’s no sense in blaming the weathermen for not being able to get it right a lot of the time, especially here in Kentucky where the two jet streams, north and south wobble up and down over us. Our weather is especially hard to forecast because of that.
I just heard a transformer blow!!! Wow!!
wind gusts are not helping here in Jeff. County KY.
Same here..not good
NWS dropped the ball in a major way…and I’m tired of certain MET’s trying to play this down.
We have no power. Our trees are almost on the ground. We have 3/4″ of ice and NO ice storm warning upgrade?!?
Sorry but Mark Weinberg and company can s*ck it!
He was way off and we all should have ice storm warnings.
Sirens are going off everywhere and transformers are still exploding.
Be safe everyone
We just now we’re put under a wsw a couple hours ago and our local mets STILL acted like it was no big deal
I like how bill meck says thats its over, temp 34 and rising. But even if u look at the weather ch. For lex they say 32 and we know they run warm. Glad I have this blog to turn to if not I would be lost.
Steady rain now.Temp is at 29 degrees.Possibly a flurry or random sleet mixed in but so far nothing seems to be getting slick.I think this is one of the coldest rains I have ever felt.
The radar looks strange but looks as if we will stay in the rain.I sure hope it doesn’t start freezing on the roadways.
31 in Lawrenceburg with steady freezing rain. This did warrant an “ice storm warning.” You an be as cute as you want with the details, but according to the NWS, an “ice storm warning” should be issued when .25 inches or more of ice is forecasted. I’m sorry–I don’t live at the airport or in an “urban heat island.”
Exactly!
And listening to the local MET’S in Louisville, some of them are trying so hard to downplay this by saying main roads are in good condition, and 95% of LG&E customers still have power, etc etc…
Bottom line. There is only 1 MET that got this right from the beginning, and that was Wizard of Winter Bailey.
I would love to hear MJ’s take on why NWS didn’t issue ice storm warnings for counties in Kentucky from Lexington to Louisville.
I would too. I think you issue that given the conditions simply to give folks a heads up that significant icing is occurring. The roads are fine right now–but the impact on power lines, etc. seems to warrant this? I know a winter storm warning was issued–but that is supposed to cover a mix of sleet/ice/snow and/or heavy snow. I had about 10 minutes of sleet/snow here–the rest has been all freezing rain–since about 8:00 P.M!
The other mets had to play it down with the way they all but called out Chris by name. Chris saw this as an impact storm over a week ago while the others played it up as hype and declared that it would just be rain.
I refuse to get my weather info from any other met in the area!
For the most part he is very accurate. If there is even a possibility I like to know.I live in a place that is impossible to get in and out if any precipitation occurs so I need to know before it happens. If it doesn’t happen exactly as forecast then at least I was prepared.Better than the other way around. No one can be 100% but this blog is much closer to being correct than any other sites I check.
Reports of creek flooding in Carter County.
