Good afternoon, folks. What a storm that is finally wrapping up across Kentucky. It brought a major ice storm to much of the state with others seeing flooding problems. Now comes the snow showers and additional snow makers coming over the next week.
Colder air is blowing into the state this afternoon with gusts approaching 30mph. Snow showers and flurries will be common and these can put down light accumulations that can slicken up roads. Temps fall through the 20s and wind up in the teens overnight.
A few more flakes will fly around on a cold Thursday and a few more could be around on Friday.
Another snow maker sweeps in on Saturday…
The models appear to be a little too strung out for my taste this weekend as they bring another system in for Sunday. Will these two come our separately or will the models go back to showing the bigger system they had a few days back.
If they do come our separately… then you will see another storm develop early next week and roll eastward to our south…
There is a lot of winter left in the tank and there is plenty of snow to come over the next few weeks.
Take care.
Still hoping we have a chance at a historic snow or any sizable snow. I’m not done with this winter just yet.
1ST!!!
Nope.
Just FYI:
Paducah: 12.5″
Louisville: 19.3″
Jackson: 18.3″
…
…
Nashville: 1.3″ (my location – 2.3″)
Count your blessings, Kentucky. You are blessed with respect to winter weather. 🙂 To anyone living off I-265…I’ve snowchased twice already up there. Love McNeely Lake Park.
I would hardly call 3 inches being blessed with winter weather. Enjoy your day Mr Fry
Oops…forgot Lexington at 14.7″
Sorry, Andy. Wasn’t trying to be inconsiderate. I feel your pain. 😉 Hoping a southern slider can give TN and southern Kentucky some much needed snow to get our totals caught up.
now your talkin 🙂 It seems some forget there is apart of KY outside of Central and Northern
Just when you folks in southeast KY give up on winter you will get thumped with snow yet, bet on It 😉
If we don’t get sledding snow this weekend i’m done and going to be prepping my garden
McNeely is beautiful when it snows!
…about 10 inches total for Richmond. One 6 inch event and four heel nippers. the 6 inch event is the largest single event in my 9 years here. The 10 inches is probably the second most of any winter during that same 9 year span.
Fail!
Yep.
Thanks Chris. Get some rest. Appreciate you and all the KYT weather team. Happy Weatherperson’s Day!
I second this ^
I third it…
“There is a lot of winter left in the tank and there is plenty of snow to come over the next few weeks.”
I really wasn’t expecting to hear that. Thanks for all the great coverage CB! Get some rest.
Winter has been almost all bark so far and not much bite as far as snow for a lot of us, but missing the big ice by a few degrees is a win 🙂
Still not seeing a big snow for the usual suspect areas, but admire CBs conviction!
“All bark and no bite” would seem to indicate some sort of discord between what you were told would happen and what did happen. The only consistency along those lines, though with an occasional large misstep, has been temperature. Given that the scripted narrative on here has been how much “winter weather” we’ve been having so far, it stands to reason that this is actually the only measuring stick that’s being valued in the presentation of the season. After all, I believe the only concrete prediction by CB going into the season was about temperature.
That map for next week’s potential system doesn’t look good: storm system coming from the south, blue freeze line draped across Kentucky… Another potential ice storm?
I booked a beach vacation today. The lady I rented from said she has seen an increase in requests from the Ohio Valley. No doubt!
Next weeks storm looks like a repeat of yesterday cold rain south and seky ice central to north
apparently you haven’t looked at the models this is more like the Sat/Sunday system that was sneaky i guess we will see how many go for the fake
I know I speak for myself when I say I’m done with this insanity. This brutal weather has me wore out. Wishing I lived in a condo instead of on a farm. Then I could just sit inside and watch instead of being out working in this day after day.
Yeah, my little apartment gives me lots of time to watch the weather models and enjoy a “down day” like today. Take good care of those animals.
8000 ppl in my area without power..guess ima be sleeping by the fire the next couple nights
you guys on Gas or propane or wood?
Gas!
I lied lol it’s actually propane!
ok well that’s good you have your own supply as pressure can drop of your on natural gas and everybody is sharing the supply.
Dodger says Chris Mr Bailey is da King of KY Weather! And I hope the winter keeps comin’ ON! Dodger!
Thanks Chris! You sure have been in overdrive the past few weeks, and for that, your faithful followers can be thankful. I appreciate everything that you and all of the team at KYT do. I’m still holding out hope that we will see a big snow at some point before this winter is over–hey I can dream can’t I! 🙂 Everyone be safe! The temperature is dropping, and that wind is BRUTAL! Happy Wednesday! And Happy Weatherman’s Day to the best of the best!!!
Everyone stay safe out there dropping temps, no melting of the ice, and windy conditions spells trouble to me. More downed trees and power lines.
Chris…thanks for all that you do to keep us informed, especially your updates throughout the duration of the storms.
Chris, I love it that you say snow chances still to come over next weeks, but just being honest here in Madison Co. more likely rain chance with 1/4 in backend snow!
Sadly, This.
Baseball pitchers & catchers report to spring training in 9 days.
I’m ready for Spring.
Question for the KY natives. I live in GA and I am supposed to be driving up to Ft. Knox this weekend with my husband and 7 month old. We planned on leaving Friday morning to spend some time is Louisville then driving back after his drill on Sunday. With the current weather conditions I’m nervous that we may get stuck in KY, on the road, or run across a ton of ice on the roads. Not sure that KY is anything like GA when you get ice and snow. We got ice last week and had thousands of people stuck on the roads for almost 24 hours. Thanks!
Lexington roads getting very slick…be careful!
Bottom picture, system next week, looks to be a cold rain. Rain is better then ice.
Roads in Lexington are getting slick…lots of black ice. Be careful going home all!
I just picked my son up from a Lexington area school and my ABS breaks got quite the workout. I narrowly avoided a few fender benders and I am grateful for my new tires. If you are going to drive in Lexington, leave a big following distance, it is much worse than it looks.
Power been off in NE lexington( Loudon/Bryan Station area) since 7:30 last night. KU is saying it wont be back on untill tomorrow night sometime.
Hope this freezing drizzle we are having now doesnt do more damage.
Glad CB said a few weeks instead of through the end of the month. Winter (although mild) didn’t want to leave last year. I hope this year the warm up to spring gets here before mid-May. CB nailed it last year when he said winter wasn’t leaving. I hope that statement is not made this year.
What is wrong with you people? Anyone that thinks it is “great” to have ice storms, slick streets, has problems. If you want snow, move north.
and it makes you upset reading people’s comments and opinions
move to another site.
Chillax! It’s easy to do right now: just step outside for a few minutes. Humm…what’s wrong with you people…where have I heard that phrase before!? Tsk, tsk…..
Send snow towards Somerset!!!
Power is out over here in Catalpa Gardens, in Shelbyville. And it’s snowing. Still.
Flurries present for the past hour.
I have been watching the potential for Saturday for a few days. Was thinking it may turn out to be another event like the Sunday storm. That storm kind of came out of nowhere just a few days before. However, the models have to trend this one even further north than the last one.
Please Chris, make it stop!!! When are you going to give us your spring outlook. You gave us the winter outlook way before winter started. Please give us your thoughts about when it will warm up. And also,if it is going to be like last spring and wait til the middle of May to warm up…..Thank you weather guru…..
Roads are VERY slick in Lexington. Snowing moderate to heavily BUT these are tiny flakes, takes time to accumulate but throughout today, have gotten about 0.2″ of snow in my area.
I feel for anyone dealing with ice, not a big fan of it personally. Monticello still needs a good snow though hard to believe it’s been 16 years since our last “big” one. So far this year I’ve measured around 3 1/2 inches on the back porch ….total.
everyone needs to remember that the models this winter have not been very reliable past 4 days out…most of our storms have not appeared on the models until 2-3 days before…believe me..this pattern is loaded for several good chances at more significant storms..
“There is a lot of winter left in the tank and there is plenty of snow to come over the next few weeks.”
Let’s hope some of that falls toward Andy Rose’s Knox County and any of the other areas continuing to be so deprived of snow.
If the cold and snow wants to hold on, I really do hope some of the areas (including mine) gets in on the action. Even with all the wimpy winters of the last 15+ years, this one has been one of the lowest for snow totals in these parts of Kentucky.
Nope…Bubba G and I WANT a decent 10″+ snow….then we’ll hush for a bit!
Yep. Sans the ice.
Roads getting slick in north London.
Hope all you without power have a way to keep warm and get your electricity restored quickly.
On a side note, Still hoping for a sizable snow here in Middlesboro. That may not happen, but if it doesn’t, my next wish is for more than one day a week of sunshine (which is about all we have gotten in over 2 months. 3-4 days of rain and 6 days of gray, gloomy skys every week is really having a toll on my mental well being. I really can’t remember a winter that has been this depressing!
We got POWER!!! A lot quicker than they said too!!
🙂
snowing in Corbin
roads covered in southern laurel county.
Still waiting on power to come back on Rush to top it off we now don’t have any water 🙁 I’m all for the snow so done with the ice
🙁 Hope you get them back ASAP.
Snowing Clay County!!!!! It is coming down at a good pace. Roads are covered and slick.
Evidently roads are awful in Lexington and their are wrecks everywhere. Be safe folks!!!
They are AWFUL! I left my office at 4:00 and made it home to Lawrenceburg (23 miles from Lexington) about 5:15. Saw a nasty wreck on the way.
Spencer Co. is closed again tomorrow. We’ve had one full week of school since December it feels like.
What a wicked week. 5 inches of snow on Sunday into Monday. Ice storm on Tuesday that didn’t melt the snow, and now a deceptive coating of snow (all roads covered in Lawrenceburg) on Wednesday. Looks like Thursday night into Friday brings close to 0 temps. I don’t see how anyone is complaining this has not been a wicked winter.
At 7:07 p.m., I’m looking out my front window onto Tates Creek Road. Bumper to bumper, at a crawl. Just had a text from a co-worker who has been on Nicholasville Road between Lowry Lane and New Circle since 5:00. Looks like we’re having our own mini Atlanta here in Lex.
I left my office about 4:15–I’m in Lexington Green. I made it home to Lawrenceburg about 5:15. Not the worst commute I’ve seen, but the worst in several years. These small snows at 25 degrees or snow are much worse on the roads than a heavy snow at 32 degrees. It is deceptively slick.
Garrard County roads are slick as snot. Lots of cars sliding off the roads here. It’s a thin layer of ice under the small amount of snow we have received. Odd that there is no advisory for this area. These driving conditions are simply horrendous.
Pouring the snow on my part of knott county.
Amazed at the number or wrecks showing up on the twitter feed. Was getting slick in Mercer when I drove home at 5:15. Roads are glazed. The little snow burst made it slick. Not going anywhere tonight. I feel really sorry for those still trying to commute home. I bet they were unawares.
