Good evening, gang. The snow showers and bands of light snow I’ve been talking about are causing big issues. Numerous accidents are being reported across the region and a few roads have been shut down. Accumulations up to an inch will be possible.
Kudos to the NWS in Jackson for issuing a Winter Weather Advisory for eastern Kentucky…
Wish I could say the same for surrounding offices. This is a HIGH impact travel event for much of the state.
Here are the trackers…

Take care.
I used to think LMK was a great office. Until last night. Point blank–.25 inches or greater of ice in the LMK area warrants an Ice Storm Warning. I don’t care what the temperature at Standiford Field is. Apparently, enough areas of Louisville stayed below freezing long enough to shut down JCPS today. The NWS needs to move the official reporting stations to somewhere more representative of the area.
For the life of me, I still don’t see why the office of the NWS isn’t the “official” temp and snowfall.
We have recieved 5″ more snowfall this year in NE Louisville, than the “official” total. But, I was told on several occasions, this is a political agenda, and they are never going to move it from the airport. Natural heat islands convince people of global warming, much easier.
They also relocated the AWOS sensor at Lexington in the past year–and guess what–Lexington temps have jumped! Great to know the people we pay with our tax dollars truly care about the public welfare and not some agenda!
Bingo
Sadly this seems true.
Just my two cents and I’m not sure if it has any merit or not, but if they only had official reporting sites at NWS, most states would only have three or four official reporting sites. I guess it’s easier to have the weather station at the airport because all airports need them anyway.
Papa–doesn’t help much when a majority of the forecast area is below freezing while the airports are at 32 and above. I never rose above freezing here last night–SDF hit 33/34; LEX 33 or so. I would venture to say my experience matches a majority of those in Louisville and Lexington. Why relocated the Lexington sensor then? Why put it in a place that is 1-2 degrees warmer than before?
I’m not saying it’s right, I’m just saying that’s probably a reason they do it. Airports have to have some kind of weather station, so it’s cheaper to have the official one there than to have one there and one a few miles down the road. Granted, I’m sure with technology these days it’s no problem to create a weather station so there is a valid point to have them moved from the airports.
I am new here but I really don’t think it is a conspiracy by the pocket protector brigade to move the LEX station (even though it is a bad location) to promote global warming. We can disagree what to do, but a vast majority (>99%) of scientists say the climate is changing.
If I had to wager, a more likely reason for the abudence of official weather stations at airports is because of the federal subsidies provided by having them placed there.
Climate change is cyclical. What goes around comes around, and then back again. It’s just mama Earth doing her thing. The only different between now and hundreds of years ago is that technology has somehow outpaced our ability to logically reason… We rely on machines to predict the future (many times to our benefit), whereas our ancestors were doing the same thing by utilizing instinctual reasoning and historical learning. Regardless… the snow sure is beautiful tonight!
It is beautiful tonight.
School was cancelled, so I took my daughter out to marvel at the crystalline beauty and to catch some falling stars.
However, because of her and my sons, I refuse to stick my head into the sand and pretend that those that know more than me are ignorant. We live in a marvelous age (evidenced by the fact we are communicating across unknown distances) but that doesn’t reduce our responsibility.
100 years ago the average life span was 31 years. I’m 36. I’m not going to discount what those that have made the world a better place have to say about the world we are leaving my children.
I wish you could say the same about the surrounding offices as well. Get more feedback from NWS Jackson that doesn’t even cover our county. Heck the other office doesn’t put anything out for us last night even though they received ice reports for hours from our county. Additionally, while being given reports of flooding taking place this morning they not only didn’t issue a warning they cancelled the watch. WHILE GETTING ONGOING FLOODING REPORTS. It is beginning to get beyond funny and becoming dangerous.
They don’t even now-cast. Post-casting is not going to cut it. Not sure what is going on over there but they need to get their tails in gear.
Some roads white here. Wish the advisory would have came out sooner! Happy Weatherperson Chris! Your the best!
We have light snow in Somerset and is blowing around on the roads. There are a few spots that will likely be slick but not bad now. But we did not get the ice a lot of you did. That might be the difference. In any event, thanks Chris for keeping us updated and warned!you are THE BEST!
Roads are slick in Nelson County I was just told.
Roads are very slick and snow covered in mercer county.
About .25 in. or more of snow in east frankfort and getting slick, again, wow the little showers that could, very fluffy but making roads dangerous! Be careful out their folks!
Roads are aweful in Lawrenceburg. Yet no winter weather advisory? Took me over an hour to get home from Lexington. Glad I left at 4:00 instead of 5:00.
Dodger says this is indeed a winter to remember! Dodger!
If you can dodge a wrench can you dodge WINTER?
When Chris was our meteorologist in WV he would frequently point out how inconsistent the NWS can be on his old blog. I just drove home from work on black ice and light accumulation of snow which for me isn’t a problem but it still would be nice to see the Charleston WV NWS put out something.
Yesterday we had freezing rain all evening without any notices yet this morning there was a special weather statement despite the temperature going above freezing by then.
There has been nothing on the radar over garrard all evening, yet we have a decent little coating of snow.
Too bad there’s not a radar that adequately detects this powdery snow in Laurel County. EVERY road was white for a time until salt trucks finally starting on the main roads. Wet roads all day turned to ice covered skating rinks. Be careful out there!
An excellent point, WDof2. With all the technology at our disposal, radar that can accurately detect snowfall should be at the top of the weather equipment wish list.
Something also needs to be done with the Mesonet site. High traffic loads often kill it at the most inopportune times, but that’s a fairly easy fix…..if some additional money can be found.
BPS
That should be “accurately detect light snowfall” in the post above.
BPS
Unfortunately BPS, the Mesonet has been facing some financial woes as of late.

Same here in Casey Co. A fine snow fell all day here and never showed on radar. Roads were white on my way home @ 5:00. Hoping nothing extra added for the a.m. commute.
Id like to get a count of how many school districts are closed tomorrow. I think its the most I’ve ever seen at once.
Everyone except Franklin. Does anyone know how the roads there are?
many secondary roads are snow covered in Leslie County…DB parkway and 421 are snow covered in many areas as well
Thank you for keeping us informed. My husband got fuel for the generator and said power would be out in spite of only being in the flood threat. Sure enough it went out last night and is still out. And there is a line down in the yard beside the house. This is part of the new section that runs to the neighbors. Now the water in the roads is ice with a good layer of snow. Wondering if they can get back in here.
Still coming down good in the topmost area of Knott County.
Speaking of the Lexington temp move……..The past year I’ve definitely noticed a difference, but I wasn’t aware they actually MOVED it from one location to the other, until someone above mentioned this…….I just thought something was wrong with it since it seemed off by a few degrees at times……..So where did they move it and why????? If it was already located AT the airport, why move it? Where is it now?
Bryant’s front yard, blow torch 🙂
Anyone else notice the big blob of snow developing near Indy heading our way. Looks that could put down another inch or so.
I agree, if that makes it down here I think it could squeeze out an inch.
The roads are very slick in Laurel county.School has been cancelled for tomorrow.Very thin layer of ice on everything with thin coating of snow.I didn’t check my driveway but the steps are extremely slick.Temp is around 24 degrees.
Oh almost forgot
It’s National Weatherperson’s Day
Want to say thank you to our favorite weather person.
You are greatly appreciated Chris for all the effort you
put in and the tremendous amount of time you devote
to informing us.Thank you.
