Good Thursday, everyone. Our harsh winter continues across the bluegrass state and shows no signs of letting up. We just had a snowstorm, a icestorm and a disruptive snow in a 4 day period. The wild setup for this week was talked about here more than a week ago and was the source of some manufactured weather drama. I will continue to take the high road and let the weather speak for itself. 🙂
As I said… we have a lot of winter to go and I’m tracking the possibility of more snow makers over the next week.
A few snowflakes or snow showers will be around today as temps hang around in the low 20s. The snow and ice we have isn’t going anywhere and may still be around a week from now. I just don’t see any kind of a warm up that would cause any melting. As a matter of fact… we are likely to put more snow on the ground.
Several systems will impact our region through early next week. Some will be weak, but some may not be so weak. There is a ton going on in the atmosphere and the models will likely play catch up on individual systems.
The first arrives Friday night into Saturday and should produce a band of light snow. The GFS…
The Canadian Model has a little better reflection…
It wouldn’t take much to get a more wound up system and that will be something to watch for on the models later today.
The Canadian then brings another light snow maker in here later Sunday and Sunday night…
All of the models then develop a bigger storm Monday night into Tuesday…
Again… use caution in trying to pick out any one system to be weak or strong. Just realize we have several systems to track through the middle of next week. Each of these can produce some snow around here. If things work out just right… it could add up to some decent totals.
The Canadian shows the waves of snow doing just that over the next 5 days…
Oh no… I posted a snow map from a computer model and am explaining it’s not an actual forecast!! The internet may just shut down because of all the lectures that will follow. Look at it this way… all that hot air may help melt some of the snow and ice. I couldn’t resist. 😉
I will update things later today. Take care.

contact me i LOVE weather i have a lot of weather radars and I can help u track the storms.
You’re the best!
The high road is always the best one to take.Might take awhile but the low one tends to get rough at some point.
I won’t be upset if we get no more snow this winter.Living on a steep hill has big disadvantages during snow or ice for sure. But we have to accept what ever comes our way.We don’t have much ice here but it sure is slick.Just went out to give my feral kitties some warm milk and its still flurrying somewhat at present and holding at around 24 degrees.
Crystal, we also have ferals that we care for.. having spayed/neutered them also. During the first Arctic outbreak, we had hot water bottles in the heated cat house. OK for the adults but we got the four youngsters (5 month olds) inside. I don’t think they would have survived the -17F we got here. They are now fully socialised with us.. but we keep them apart from our Siamese kitties.. and we also have the male indoors too.. he’s gone from skittery to a big old softy that the kittens adore 🙂 The remaining “mama” cat, Red, has a heated water bowl and good quality dry food and the heated cat house to herself. We also take care of our birds with 37 feeders and a heated bird bath 🙂
Wow! I absolutely love animal lovers like you two. I appreciate people like you that know how important it is to take care of our 4 legged friends.
Ha! 🙂
Chris……That was about as subtle as a garlic sandwich 🙂
🙂 I think he is about ready to fire us.
Thanks for posting the models, I like to look at them.
I set their arses straight on the comments on their posts I told them cb plainly posts for entertainment purposes and then people that don’t know how to comprehend for entertainment purposes start spreading what they think cb said, drama drama drama. We love you cb, you rock & we got your back! Always!
In northwest Lexington, the roads in my subdivision are now completely white and covered
Light snow still coming down here. The thin layer of ice is making it really slick.
How much snow is pink representing?
Enough to be pretty…o so pretty…;)
“”Oh no… I posted a snow map from a computer model and am explaining it’s not an actual forecast!! The internet may just shut down because of all the lectures that will follow. Look at it this way… all that hot air may help melt some of the snow and ice. I couldn’t resist. ;)””
I almost spit out a drink of coffee when I read this. Cracked me up. Thanks Chris. You havre really done a great job for my area this winter. Our family is very thankful you do this blog. Take care of yourself! Too many long hours may let a virus take advantage of you!
I did the same thing. You ROCK Chris Bailey and all the Sisters here at the Dwelling Place Monastery in Floyd County are believers. Thanks.
I’ve had enough of winter! It’s time for winter to move on! I’m so ready for spring flowers and yard work. I love my knockout roses and fruit trees 🙂 Hope everyone has a great wonderful blessed day.
Barb, March 20th will be here sooner than than you think. Only thing is we may still have snow on the ground when it arrives. Winter is here to stay for awhile. Have a great day.
Depending on where you live.
I’m right there with you Barb. Nothing better than spring after a harsh winter. I love gardening too and my flowers.
Barb, me too.. I’m frothing at the bit to get the ducks outa my greenhouse so “I” can get in there and get my vegetable seeds started on my heated mats. This time two years ago I was setting up my trays.. ah well.. Spring will come soon enough I guess!
As of midnight, Lexington was up to 15.5 inches of snow for the entire snow season (Jul-Jun) and 14.1 for winter (Dec-Feb). The last time Lexington had a Top 10 snowiest season (Jul-Jun) was 1993-1994 with 31.7. The last time we had a Top 10 snowiest winter (Dec-Feb) was 2010-2011 (yes, shocking—we actually haven’t been that snow deprived!) with 27.0 inches. We’d have to get a big storm in February to even approach the winter season record.
So Lexington city employees are on a 2-hr delay but UK is on a completely normal schedule, interesting.
The Transportation Cabinet isn’t providing any good news here for the road conditions in Madison and Fayette… http://511.ky.gov/winteractivities/main.jsf

In spite of the harshness, the snow so far was mainly for the usual third of the state that gets the good stuff. Would be nice to see more of the state in the snow action, rather than ice or flooding rains 🙂 We all got the cold air, but not much of the fluffy white stuff.
For perspective, Richmond has gotten about 11″ of snow this winter and that is a LOT compared to other areas. The key trend point has held firm for a lot of us: No big snow. Yep, we had our chances, but they have remained chances.
I think the I-64 corridor is the new fence.
Nothing new about that fence.
26 and a very light dusting of snow here in knott co
Thanks for the morning laugh!!! 🙂
Thanks Chris B. For the update. Looking forward to more snow and cold.
Where is the moisture down/over in TX/OK headed. Looks to me that it is moving towards Southern KY. Is that the Friday night system? Looks to be moving a little faster than a Friday night arrival. Next Mon. System will be bigger than expected. Of course we will have to deal with rain and freezing rain somewhere in KY. Be safe everyone and have a great day.
it has been a good year for plowing and salting.
you will not have to declare bankruptcy this year.
I don’t know what the drama is you keep mentioning but it doesn’t matter. You are the weather dude we depend on because of your accuracy and honesty. Keep up the great job! Schools, churches, businesses and individuals are depending on you here in Edmonson County. Thanks
Lol! I love the last comment about the computer model! Anyone who follows you on the weather should know that, in addition to telling us what you think WILL happen, you also tell us what you think COULD happen! We all know that! But you are 100% right one one thing ….. you told us about all this winter weather way back before winter even started! Glad it’s not too crowded here on the high road!
Morning all and thanks Chris. Love your sense of humor! As far as snow goes, we keep getting close, but no “we-o” as a grocery store chain used to say. Can’t help but think that one if theses boogers is going to open up and make us all happy… When we keast expect it. Have a great Thursday and thanks again Chris for the morning day brightener.
Well I can honestly say that I don’t feel snow deprived at least here in Lexington……This winter seems like it’s lasting FOREVER!!!!!! Usually it goes by so fast……..and it’s still early Feb. I’m amazed we had over and inch of rain and all the snow is STILL on the ground.
Ditto here in Louisville.
#1 source for weather! Thanks Chris Bailey! I don’t mind the snow. Love, love, love the snow! Bring it on..
Waking up to snow day #12 in Laurel County with a beautiful fresh light snowcover. Roads are still looking slick and will likely be until the sun helps a bit.
Hope those snows next week work out for everyone! I’m headed to FL next week but will miss the winter possibilities here. 🙂
Question: Is the winter storm currently in Oklahoma/Arkansas heading our way in Kentucky? Is that Friday night’s possibility?
Just posted the Canadian snow fall map on my Facebook page….said the greys are 1″ and the pink is18″. Ha ha….everyone post the same thing. Just joking, but that would be a riot.
I can just here it now…..”I heard from and cousin of friends moms grandpa on facebook that we are gonna get 2 feet snow next week”
thank you Chris. yeah, stay above the negativity…good move.
roads seem better than last night but still bad on side roads and subdivisions. slow down and stay focused….
still wishin’ and hopin’ – a BIG SNOW for everyone in blog land.
Snow wise, here in Lex we’re behind NKY and ahead of the southern folks.
it’s been a fun ride so far!
One of the biggest snows of the season fell last night in Knox and yes it was a coating 😉
A quick update…I just have to, because every 10 minutes I see Christie Dutton on Wave come on and say “just a few flurries around the area today, little to no accumulation expected.”
We have had a steady snow for over half an hour now in NE Louisville, and have picked up a fresh 1/4″. So, to me, 1/2″ an hour snow rate is not flurries. 🙂
What is even more funny is the “travelers advisory” put in place by the NWS out of Louisville, is set to expire in 10 minutes.
She also just said maybe a 1/2″ of snow this weekend if anything at all.
I’m just the messenger… maybe she is right, lol.
Lol! I got on here to say that same thing. We’re at about 1/2″ now in Hardin county and it’s still coming. I can understand difficult forecasts but come on. Look out your dang window! Maybe she’s using a radar like the one on here. It isn’t picking up the snow. Despite accuweather’s historically inaccurate forecasts, their radar is picking up the current snow showers. Looks like more are blowing up around Evansville and headed this way.
Ok, this is funny because i just said the advisory was set to expire. NWS JUST came on and extended the traveler’s advisory until 4pm for a possible 1/2″ or less of additional accumulation.
I know, if I hear her say that one more time I will scream. At school now and those ‘flurries’ are still coming down.
I wouldn’t worry to much about that computer model. If people have not figured out yet that it’s not been close to accurate all year, then something is wrong. If you added up the totals that thing has spit out all season the state would be approaching 100 inches by now. I would hate to be a met in this state. Models can’t even nowcast this place. 🙂
Saw that LMK issued a “travler’s advisory.” Wow, I haven’t seen one of those since I was a youngin’. Didn’t think the NWS issued those anymore.
I didn’t either. I thought the “winter weather advisory” had taken the place of the “travelers advisory.” Brings to mind my favorite NWS warning when I was a kid – the rare “Heavy Snow Warning.” Can only remember them being issued a time or two, even during the magical winters of ’77 and ’78. They would not be issued unless it was already heavily snowing. I’m pretty sure the “Heavy Snow Warning” use was discontinued by the NWS.
just shows what its coming too when ya get advisories for a 1/2 inch of snow …wow
It doesn’t appear to be an “official” advisory. Just something Louisville doing to point out bad travelling conditions, I guess.
I also remember how bummed I would feel when our Winter Storm Watch would be changed to a Traveler’s Advisory instead of a Winter Storm Warning back in the day.
Chris – since finding your blog I read it every day. Keep your humor and CORRECT weather reports coming!
I know…………I remember on the weather channel in the 80s the terms “travelers advisory”………..haven’t heard or thought of that in a long time.
yea what happened to that phrase? I remember that when I was a kid. But I do remember when the term “dusting ” went out of thd weather vocabulary lol
Way to keep things in perspective Chris. Keep up the good work and don’t sweat the folks with too much time on their hands. Thanks for all you do! -West
My electric is back on. Figured I would check here first and see what might be coming. Looks like schools here may miss a little more. Everything here froze last night then a light layer of snow covered that. No sun yet and nothing is melting at these temps without it. They had a 4×4 and could not make the little bank by my house. The big hill that has to be crossed is probably impossible to cross without 4×4 and then still dangerous.
This winter has been crazy for sure. Hope we have seen the last of the ice.
And those models look good Mr. Bailey. Hope one of those has some nice legs to it. Have a good weekend. That goes for everyone.
strange how its snowing in Louisville and sunny in frankfort all morning, a few clouds coming in now, temps up to 25 in Franfort so temps should get warmer than forecast for today?
22° here in Lexington, its been about half clouds and half sun, but a little more clouds. I think we may get a degree or two warmer than forecasted today IF the sun stays out for a while.
Wonder how long the snowpack is gonna stay? Here in Lexington, there’s 4″ depth of snow and according to the forecasts, doesn’t look like much melting will take place this week, if at all. Only way I see snow going away with temps like this is if its sunny everyday to sublimate the snow, or if the forecasts around freezing bust and we get to 40° or something.
Including the ice on the trees.
Probably will take rain and temps in the 40s to get rid of this snow pack because so much ice is mixed in with it!
31 here in knott co what little dusting we had on ground is all but gone
Ground in Topmost of knott county is still white.

I think this puts it in perspective winters like this were the norm outside the lack of snow for some areas until the mid 90s.
Micah Harris at lunch says a dusting maybe an inch this weekend, wonder if Chris agrees??
I analyzed a map showing how the weather patterns should behave over the next 10 – 14 days or so.
It mostly showed an Alaskan trough, Siberian ridge, and a mean looking Icelandic Low. For our region, I think that translates to cold air + stormy conditions, depending on the storm track of course, which is always an issue in Kentucky.

I often read several weather blogs around these parts, and anyone that actually reads them knows the models are just that and likely to change and NOT a forecast! I had to make a few, nice of course, comments on other blogs to the lecturers. They should check their facts before giving a lecture…
