Good evening, everyone. Heavy snow started falling across southeastern Kentucky this afternoon and will kick it up a notch tonight. This is going to cause some serious travel issues tonight into early Thursday. Snow totals along the Virginia border counties could be enough to cause power issues.
It’s looking more and more like some of these counties will pick up between 6″ and 10″ of snow. Pike and Letcher seem to be the 2 counties with the best chance of nearing double digits. Any areas picking up more than 6″ of wet snow can have power hits.
In looking over the storm and how things are unfolding… the back edge of the snow shield may try to edge a bit north and west overnight. Areas along US 23 in eastern Kentucky have a decent shot at getting in on a bit of an increase in the snow tonight. All of this was accounted for in my snowfall forecast from yesterday.
Keep posting the weather where you are and keep on tracking…

Take care.
Snowing lightly in Carrie of knott county, enough to cover slushy cover the ground but seems to be meting before gaining much accumulation, must be the outer fringe here
Laying on road here in knott co have about inch on my deck so far
Hoping a lot of the eastern folks get the snow they wanted.
Israel, still some of us folk in southern Ky still have not had any snow to speak of. Pulaski Co is always close to the action, but it’s like being a bridesmaid, but never the bride!
Sorry Coffee that your missing out i have about 2 inches of snow so far
i feel your pain here in london as well, we can almost sniff it, but no cigar.
Started snowing again here in McCreary! So hope we get a big snow!!!
Just noticed we need 1.3″ or more snow here
Why isn’t the rest of my comment posting? I bet this whole comment will show
It was the 3rd sunny day in a row here in the Lexington Metro. I was glad to see it. We still had 3 inches of snow on the ground at 7:00 P.M. so I would say we will extend our streak to 11 days in a row of 3 inches or more of snow on the ground tomorrow. That is the longest since December 16-28, 1989.
This winter won’t end up a Top 10 coldest winter though–in fact, it will only be the 3rd coldest winter in the past 5 years.
Seriously? The 3rd coldest winter in the past 5 years? I’m guessing because this winter was loaded with snow and bitter cold within a time span of a month, while the others were below average most of the winter overall.
Yeah–2010 and 2011 will both end up being colder. So far this winter is averaging about 31.5 2010 averaged 30.7 and 2011 31.5. With the milder air coming in, I think we will end up a bit higher than 31.5 this year. Also, 2010 had 23.7 inches of snow and 2011 had 27.0.
I am always amazed at the difference between Lexington and the Richmond area. We are only 20 to 30 miles apart but we have never had more than 10 inches of snow in any year it have lived hear (I moved here iin 2004.). This year is probably the most I have seen at 10 inches.
Still coming down in Pikeville.
You’re getting your BIG one Crystal
I know Pat can you believe it?

Sorry, wrong reply. Have no idea how it ended up in your post
This was normal before 95/96 i’m not sure whats so brutal about it. IMO
thanks Chris- a big be safe to our family and friends in Whitesburg…
hunker down!
Dodger tells Pike County folks, “you got yours!” Dodger
This looks like it will easily at least match total snowfall amounts for Knox Co. this year. Coming down at a pretty good clip and has been for a while now. Roads are still in pretty good shape though. Don’t know how long that will last.
Surprising snow flurries in Charleston WV.
Beautiful snow in Harlan County tonight! Hope we end up with a foot. 🙂
Eastern Ky Friends! ENJOY your snow!
Snow is pouring down here in Jenkins ( Letcher Co.) just looking out on the front porch it looks like we have 2 1/2 ins or better. That’s just a guess. Every one stay safe.
A little over 2″ in Middlesboro and still pouring! The radar looks good and healthy here for a big one.
almost 5″ here in southern tn….and still pouring…
1.5 inches in gunnivillechester AKA Clay Co. its coming down. now were im at in Annville and there nothing, natta, zilch. looking at radar it getting funky like a monkey from Clay S/SE/ back thru PIKE Co. enjoy my friends as rolo very happy for all u all. I said earlier were it was snowing I saw 4-6 inches. ill stick with that as BORDER Counties approaching a foot.
and 5 min before that only VA border counties and you nailed it LoL
Not to mention CB and other mets have said the same thing for totals. Winning! 🙂
Pouring the snow at my mother’s house in Knott Co..Just measured inch and a half and by looking at the radar would not be surprised to see another 4 inches if it keeps this up..Seen enough snow this winter ..Ready for warmer air..
Man..Must be some king of deformation zone or something over us…Big Flakes are flying now..Looks like paper plates flying in the air..lol
really coming down now in Pike county. Roads are becoming snow covered.
Looks to be around an inch here in Carrie of knott county
Andy must be out playing in the snow.
not enough
only 2 inches and its dark
How is it looking for martin Co Chris (or any other weather Winnes out there)?
Heavy snow falling in Middlesboro at a rate of an inch an hour.. started at 6 and nearring 3″ at 9 o’clock. Big wet flakes hopefully won’t contribute to power failure
I’m thinking this is our big one! Plenty of moisture left. I wouldn’t be shocked to see us hit 8-10″ here in the Boro.
I wouldn’t be surprised. … I’m thinking at least 6-8″ if the snowfall rate continues several more hours as it looks that it will by the radar.
I’m sure there are still a few portions of Kentucky that haven’t had the snow they’ve hoped for. But really, with this snow I think most snowlovers in the state have to be pretty satisfied, given the climatology of the area, with this winter. Happy for everyone in SE Kentucky that’s finally getting the snow they hoped for! 😀
Just go ahead and tell me– it’s missed me in London hasn’t it? Go ahead and tell me– kandy’s a big girl– she can handle disappointment!! Won’t be the first time and I’m sure it won’t be the last!!
Well, don’t feel alone. It hasn’t snowed at all in Wayne County. I am so tired of it never snowing! All we get is the bitter cold
Snowing in McCreary – Pine Knot ! Ground is covered . I hope it snows a lot more ! Looks like snowline is extending just a tad west of us 🙂
Heavy snow in Leslie County, almost looks like deformation banding setting up, 2 inches and accumulating quickly, very likely to exceed 6+ inches here easily if this banding continues, would not be surprised to see winter storm warnings posted for more counties.
It is so beautiful out.It is a winter wonderland and still snowing. This has been a great day got my stitches out and got to see beautiful snow.
Nothing in northern clay at 9:15 pm, but reports of over inch in southern part clay in briteshade / gooserock area
Yea, this is going to be a pretty incredible cutoff. Could go from a half foot of snow to absolutely nothing a couple miles up the road..
3 inches at Dorton in Pike County.
Almost 3 inches in eastern letcher county and pouring big wet flakes 9:25
This one is going to hit near the high end of CB’s forecast in Knox. Looks like quite a bit of action left before this thing leaves town.
I just saw wkyt news Chris just added a new swath of 4-8 inches through half of knox co.
Correction WDKY
Nearing 2.5 inches in Northern Knox Co. NWS Jackson is still showing a storm total of <1 inch for here. Lol
Believe this is the hardest snow i have ever seen..It’s like stepping in cement..
Finally starting to snow in northern Clay. Maybe we will get some down our way now!!!!!!! COMING DOWN AT A GOOD PACE.
6″ here in beckley wv …with the worse yet to come (supposedly)…
Closing in on 4″ in Middlesboro. Snowing a 1″ per hr.
Looks like SEKY is finally getting their back pay for all of the misses and flooding rains this year. Beautiful snowfall out there right now.
Look how the back edge is filling in …It may snow all night if that heads our way…
Yes. Radar is looking healthy around here. (Middlesboro).
Have to say the RAP model nailed this for our area….It was bringing the Precip more west in our area today than any other model..A stellar performance..
Steady light snow in Lawrence Co. (Clifford area). Snowing steadily for past 25 to 30 minutes. My sidewalk and cars are lightly covered with a dusting of snow. NOW let’s get some of that heavier snow my neighbors in Martin, Floyd and Pike are enjoying to settle in my area.
Well, I think I can see that sharp cut off – sadly, in the haves vs. have nots of this storm, Corbin is firmly in the have not category. I have a coating on the ground and some flurries flying around. No joy.
Nothing in Greenup. This sucks big time…
Eclipsed the 4″ mark. Now headed to 5″ in the Boro. Lol
Congratulations ..Hope you get many more..Looks like Eastern part’s of Pike Co. should be getting hammered right now..
Coming down very hard here in Belfry. Hardest snowfall I’ve seen this winter.
stopped snowing in corbin
I have about 1/4 inch in South Corbin….my son in Williamsburg has around 4 downtown still snowing
On a side note, both the GFS and NAM 00z runs have the Friday storm getting stronger.
Just saw this… Perhaps something to get excited about? Can anyone post a model?

Keep in mind, some of the totals in SEKY are from the storm tonight, but the central KY totals are mostly all from the Friday storm.
Great, thanks BP, You da man!

What does it say for Lexington? My smartphone doesn’t have the java flash thing so I can’t view it.
Up to 3″
“Smart” phone lol
OK – What’s next? This is only brushing the edges of the area. Anything on the horizon or are we done for the winter?
Honestly, a few systems left this weekend that look to impact Central and S Central Kentucky, but after Sunday, we’re into a southerly flow with some weak ridging and look to warm up with the overall pattern looking to change into a warmer one for us.
As Chris has said, looks like maybe one more go at winter towards the end of the month before we start switching into Spring. That being said, even March has had some interesting events from time to time, but I do think we’re nearing the end.
The snow is beautiful and the kid in me is loving it (as long as the power stays on), however, I genuinely now feel bad that many of you snow lovers still haven’t had a good snow this year. Maybe, just maybe, those of you who have been left out will get your snow fix before the end of winter. 🙂
The snow has really picked up here in southern laurel county, don’t know how long it will last, but it is snowing.
Man, Pikeville and the far SE counties are gonna get absolutely clobbered with snow for the next few hours. Looks to be at least another 4-5 hours of moderate/heavy snow. I’m sure it’s an extremely wet snow, actually read that parts of the Carolina were expecting 8:1 snow ratios, which would just be ridiculously saturated.
We are now.
We have 6″ in Phelps (far eastern pike county). If it keeps this up all night we will have over a foot. Snowing about an inch per hour. Just hoping the power does not go out. God Bless and take care.
It is absolutely pouring in Hindman. Has been for hours. Pretty though. Might as well look on the bright side..
Seven inches in the Cawood area of Harlan County and still pouring the snow.
careful what u ask for.lol that said 2 more hours should wind this up…
What are you doing up this late lol?
Another strong band moving in Knott Co..
Chris saying a good shot of snow heading for ky Friday, Other METS not so much as an inch in their forecast, when will these folks learn not to under cut the master, Chris has rocked this winter, others have choked!
I totally agree. CB is a forecasting machine this winter.
6″ in Middlesboro and still snowing a inch per hr. Radar still looks good.
Nothing in Pulaski County again! 🙁
Charleston WV NWS office once again proved how inept they were waiting till the snow was pouring and roads covered to issue a storm warning for Kanawha County down thru Mingo Co. Its easy to predict when you wait for it to start happening. Chris’ accumulations last night were right on. Way before the tv stations here in WV even mentioned it.
That is some heavy snow on radar, but what impresses me more is the EXTREMELY SHARP CUT-OFF! It’s literally a wall and you could probably drive a block away and find no snow at all! I’d feel bad for anyone wanting the snow but it being just a few blocks away… http://www.wunderground.com/radar/radblast.asp?ID=JKL&lat=37.53245926&lon=-82.49909973&label=Pikeville%2C+KY&type=N0R&zoommode=pan&map.x=400&map.y=240¢erx=400¢ery=240&prevzoom=zoom&num=6&delay=15&scale=1&showlabels=1&smooth=0&noclutter=0&showstorms=0&rainsnow=1&lightning=0
NOAA in Jackson is saying 7-11 inches for Pike County overnight.
9 inches here.
Had around 7 or 8 inches at the mines. (about 5 miles from the VA line). Close to 6.5 inches here in Harlan County.
