Good Monday gang and welcome to a breath of fresh air!
The heat wave is now officially over as lower temps and much lower humidity levels are moving into the state today. The new pattern is the headline maker of the week… but that isn’t the only thing we will be tracking as some rounds of showers and storms should come calling as well.
Let us start with today because it will look and feel very good when compared to the past several weeks. Highs will range in the middle 80s for the most part and humidity levels will drop from north to south today.
For a change… you can actually track some pleasant temps here…

The front will be working southward across our southern counties today. A couple of showers and storms are still possible along and ahead of the front with the best risk across the south and southeast. Here is your radar to see where these crank up…

The front will put the brakes on across the Tennessee Valley on Tuesday. This may be just close enough for some scattered showers and thunderstorms to make an appearance across the south. That is something we will watch for. Farther north… partly sunny skies will be the rule once again. Highs back in the 80s will be common.
It is on Wednesday that we find a wave of low pressure rolling across the region. This low will have some good moisture to work with and will likely bring some heavy rains to parts of the area. Right now… it appears the southern half of the state has the best chance at seeing the heaviest rains. Tropical moisture from the gulf is going to try to get involved in this setup as well.
Here is the GFS for Wednesday afternoon…

Some leftover showers and storms may hang into Thursday before moving out and setting us up for a decent enough Friday. That doesn’t look to last long as more showers and storms should move in for the upcoming weekend.
Moral of the story… the heat wave is over and our pattern has changed. This does NOT mean we are done with 90 degree temps… not at all. Just enjoy what we have out there this week. ![]()
Have a great Monday and take care.
Yeah we certainly do need to enjoy today thoroughly! GFS for one has been consistent in setting up a dome of heat across the southeast that would keep us around 90 degrees all the way into September! Yuck.
Woo hoo! I’m off work today, and it will be a good day to be outside.
Thank you for all you do Chris.
Bluegrass airport had very little rain, while most of Lexington got a lot of rain. I think we had about an inch total from 2 different mini storms in my back yard. They were both quick and didn’t last very long. Very little lightning but brief heavy rain.
i see the 0celcius line heading for northern saskatchawan lets get it down here!!!!
Unfortunately, it is hot, hot, hot in Barbourville. The map says 87 in the area, weather.com says 91 with a heat index of 101. Where is that breath of fresh air? Everywhere else on the map seems to be in the low 80s. What has Barbourville done to deserve this? 😉
I guess I got caught up in the word “cooler” when reading the blog the past few days. It is cooler outside as it is only 81 but it still feels very hot. I don’t sweat instantly but I am not enjoying today anymore then I have since August started. It just keeps my hatred towards summer going. Lol. Bring on the low 70’s and upper 60’s.
Jake
VERY sharp cutoff to the comfortable air right now, Lex. dew point in the 50s ..just a few miles south and its still in the 70s!
Please don’t say 90 i am so sick of this heat Chris we all know you can bring us some cooler temp PLEASE.
Even with dew point in the 50’s and upper 80s, that August sun in HOT HOT HOT…..It still wasn’t that comfortable out today, but better that it has been.
CHRIS
I never know what to do when I get moderated, which is 80% of the time. I realize this is something you have to do, but why is it that sometimes they show up later, and other times they don’t? This morning I posted something and it went to moderation and (seeing that sometimes it shows up) I didn’t bother re posting anything.
Chris, while I agree the pattern is changing, it does not mean we are done with the 90s and high humidity. You make it sound like fall is on the way, when we are a long ways off from any kind of constant 80 degree temps. I know you said in your post the 90s arent over with, summer is a long ways off from over over. I fully expect 90s into mid september, then after about the 20th of september we should really start to see a real temp change.
It really is crazy how the comments get moderated like that. Hang tight… I am working on a whole new site that will be more than just a blog. 😉
64 here at cincinnati lunken field cool night
why are you not adding more revenue sources to your blog?
