Good Thursday everyone. The focus for showers and thunderstorms today should shift a little farther west compared to the past several days. This will mean central and western Kentucky may be in line for the best chance for a corridor of slow moving showers and thunderstorms setting up. This can put down enough water to cause more high water issues in a few areas.
This does not mean eastern Kentucky can’t get in on some storms… it just means the highest risk for heavy rains will be more toward Central Kentucky.
Here are your storm tracking radars…
Your headlines look like this…
– Hot and humid weather is going to build in for Friday as temps make a run toward the lower 90s. Western parts of the state will likely see temps well into the middle 90s. I am a little more bullish on the threat for some afternoon, scattered storms going up Friday… especially in the east. The boomers can help keep temps down some if they do crank up.
– Saturday might end up being the hottest of the two days. Highs will climb into the low and maybe middle 90s. High humidity levels will make it feel even hotter.
– A cold front will settle into the region Sunday and will bring an increased threat for showers and thunderstorms.
– The pattern taking shape for next week looks kinda familiar as very warm and humid weather rolls on with periodic thunderstorms around. Overall.. this is turning out to be a hot and wet summer around here. Remember me saying a few months back this was not the summer to toss around the phrase “hot and dry” ?
– The tropics are trying to wake up a bit. There is a system down in the Caribbean that is being watched as it heads toward Florida over the next few days.
I will have updates today as needed so keep checking back. Have a great Thursday and take care.
Been keeping an eye on the Bonnie-wanna-be storm as well. We decided to keep our regular schedule down here, and just adjust as it gets closer. It weekend a bit when it hit Hispanola, but has seemed to gather back some strength and definition once it hit the open waters of the Northern Caribbean and the Southern Bahamas. I’m sitting in the Northern Bahamas, watching and waiting to see what she’ll do. Keep posting comments on what ya’ll think the storm might do. This hillbilly needs to be sure everyone’s safe down here.
Looks like it will be a named tropical storm at the 11:00 advisory. Probably Bonnie, but could be Colin, as another system has blown up in the western Bay of Campeche. It is forming just your south, but the 8:00a.m. model runs now have it threading the needle through the Florida Straits and into the Gulf. Due to its close proximity, I would pay close attention to local authorities. You should be OK, although you will likely see some nasty bands pass through there.
The big story with this is going to be in the Gulf. If the models are true, it will not pass over land in Florida and head straight for the oil. Not a pretty picture, particularly if it intensifies rapidly in the Gulf. Stay safe.
This just in from the NHC…

Wishing for a cooldown and a few dry days. Contrary to one person’s accusation, I do NOT wish for drought or unbearable heat.
HEADS UP !!! southern ky.!! storms and heavy rain are getting their act together between bowling green and somerset moving east into southeastern ky.
AMEN!! I’ll second that motion…I’m not a fan of this oppressive heat either, its the Humidity that is the Killer!!..I’m ready for that september, and October crisp air!
Well that’s where we were headed….toward drought with already present unbearable heat. First 7-10 days of July had ZERO rain here. Things were getting pretty rough, and just as we FINALLY start to get some rain…you and some others started complaining about it. I hate to see the flooding some people have endured. No doubt about that. But we NEED the rain and I hope to see more of it today.
That activity is blowing up FAST, isn’t it? Wow.
at least 17 states have HEAT ADVISORIES posted in them and 4 have EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNINGS… I saw where Kansas city Mo. is exp. heat index values between 110-115 !!!… COME ON FALL WEATHER !!!
This is true, if it wasnt for the daily rains, we would be absolutely burnt up!! my yard was brown and crispy for a couple of weeks. If were gonna have 90-100 degree weather I’ll take the daily rains by all means..
yeah, its headed straight for my area. We’ll see what happens when it gets here…
We actually do not need rain every single day, but I will agree to disagree. Have a good day.
No, we don’t need daily rain. Ideally, each county would get a good rain once per week. But it doesn’t work that way. During all the flooding in eastern KY, western KY was baking in heat and sunshine. It takes DAILY chances at rainfall to end up providing rain for all of us. If there is a 50% chance of rain every day this week…my house might get rain on one or two of those days, for example. This pattern is awesome because it gives all of us at least a shot at seeing something on any given day. That’s why I love this pattern.
That’s been the problem so far this year, the rain is either feast or famine. We get nothing for weeks, then get 5 inches and flooding to make up for it. That’s mother nature for you.
I’m ready for highs in the 60s and some football myself.
As of 2:00 we have Tropical Depression 3, and a plane is on its way to see if it has become Bonnie yet. Already started getting some pretty heavy rain squalls and wind, in between bouts of sunshine.
I can respect that definitely and agree with it. My problem is I have a lawnmower on the fritz and the grass don’t wait. I also get leaks in my roof over the porch when it rains hard. It also seems like the rain cools things down briefly, but it gets hot again an hour later.
I haven’t visited the KYT page for a long while because the new radar sucked so bad. But I just checked it out again today and I really like what TG and the crew have done with it now. It’s MUCH improved…and I’d say it’s probably one of the better radar tools available for free now. So if you like watching radar, check out the new KYT weather page. Very nice indeed.
This Florida girl says BRING ON THE HEAT! I agree that a little less humidity would be nice. I’m not ready for cool weather yet, though. I am keeping fingers crossed for a dry day tomorrow so we can try the BG fair again, and go to the pool.
Great, the tropics decide to wake up just in time for the last day of my SFL vacation. I’m in the Naples area and we are now under a Tropical Storm Warning for tomorrow. We head back up to KY on Saturday.
The planes will also be doing weather manipulation. They will be employing devices to nudge the hurricane. Watch its track in the next few days, if it becomes a hurricane and forms an eye, then watch its track closely.
Look at all the tracks of major hurricanes after Katrina. Interesting stuff…
I don’t get the new radar on wkyt.com. It’s just the Intellicast.com radar stuck on the WKYT page, it’s not the “first alert defender” radar. Why go to WKYT when you can get it on Intellicast without the big Defender logo stuck over it? Did they give up on the new radar?
To much SyFy Channel……
Hey everyone! Nice to see the Wxman on here. (Of course, with the computer issues I havebeen having, I haven’t been here much, outside of work….
We have had some good rains, too, Wxman, and I have been very thankful for them.(I could have BET on rain here this week….its fair week.);)
All the same, the heat HAS been a bit much to deal with…at times.
Thanks, Chris, for the radarandthe update! I know you will keep us posted. Have a good evening, all.
Bonnie is now a named tropical storm. Models have it grazing the Keys, then into the Gulf. Current bullseye for GOM landfall is SE Louisiana. Heading right for the oil. If it intensifies in the GOM, this could get ugly.
You can access the Defender. Scroll down just a bit and it’s there. 🙂
Avg. temp. for July so far at my house is almost 79 degrees. WOW.
