Good Monday afternoon everyone and thanks for stopping in. A complex of severe thunderstorms is rolling southeastward out of Indiana and Illinois toward Kentucky. These storms have a history of producing damaging winds and large hail. For that reason… the Storm Prediction Center has put out a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of the state.
Here is a look at the counties in the watch…
Here are the latest warnings…
By the way… the watch is out even though the SPC had NO part of it outlooked for even a slight risk of severe weather!
Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats from these storms… but an these clusters can sometimes spawn an isolated tornado. Torrential rains will be common and this can cause flash flooding in a few areas.
Track the storms here…
I will update as needed and will be using Twitter to send out rapid fire updates. Follow me @Kentuckyweather to get these or check the top right hand corner of the blog to see these.
Take care.
Chris, do you expect this front to come on toward the east and watches to be put out later? I live in Estill County and was wondering if the threat will move on our way later tonight.
hmmm…………..
thanks for the update, Chris.
It seems to get these MCS systems to come through central KY they need to be in eastern Iowa/north central IL moving southeast (at the same trajectory that they are moving)…If it’s in Northern MO (like last night) it ends up too far south. Outflow boundaries might ignite other storms though. It’s so humid and hot out I wouldn’t be surprised.
About the SPC……I guess they are ultra conservative and not easily impressed.
With the available moisture and cape values at 2000+ J/kg to 3000+ farther south. As well as much of central KY having a Lift Index of at least -6 it may get interesting in places before we lose the daytime heating.
Jason, speaking of losing daytime heating…..What is up with those storms that explode late at night. There’s no daytime heating there….I think the HOT night temps help
I hear thunder! Last two comments went to moderation. I did use the word “hot” describing night time temps. Perhaps that was the no no word. I dunno. AT any rate, I never know when “moderated” comments will ultimately show up or not. Sometimes they do.
There’s something nasty brewing here in NW lex
U got it to post? My last three have been moderated
Looks like this first batch is heading in the usual direction. Airport, then Northern Fayette. Looks like more to come.
Thunder to the east of Georgetown, and south of Georgetown, but nothing at all here. These last few batches of storms have missed my backyard.
Guuulllpppp. Ahhhhhhh….
Chris, will this front continue to move toward the southeast and if it does will other parts of KY (Estill Co.) be in line for the storm?
Thunder and Lighting and starting to rain now Clark Co and Faytte CO line Winchester RD Sky Pitch black Street lights came on lost power twice thus far
Tons of lightning, some wind (maybe 30-35?), but less than 2 minutes of rain here in my part of Georgetown.
I was just out at the Bluegrass Fair at Masterson Station. A strong wind gust came through and knocked down numerous tents, including at least one of the large ones that had people under it. There were reports of injuries and numerous fire/ems were onsite. Wow…
getting plenty of rain here lately, over 2″ last night and heavy rain today as well, and more on the way… it sure is making my yard look nice and lush!…
on a somber note though, thoughts and prayers goes out to those in the devestation in pike co.
HOLY CRAP! I’ve never seen it look so black outside!!
That was the most beautiful sunset in Lawrenceburg ever. The sun was on the horizon shing up under the t-storms moving through and it created this filtered “dusty” kind of light. It was awesome.
Lexington police chief just interviewed on the Weather Channel regarding the tent collapse at the Bluegrass Fair. He stated that they were not warned by the NWS regarding the storm. That is the 2nd damaging event in 5 years at Masterson with no warning from the NWS in Louisville. Hello, anyone home?
I saw that here in Lex too. Unfortunately, I was driving because it would have been an incredible picture! Did you get a shot of it?
By the way, to go along with what Chris said…these injuries and houses being set on fire by lightning and trees blown over and general chaos that is going on……well it’s all happening in an area that it not even under a Severe T-storm Watch. Ouch. SPC continues to bring the suck hard this year…
Nope. 🙁 I should have!
