Good Monday, everyone. Today is a WKYT First Alert Severe Weather Day due to the increasing risk of severe thunderstorms. That means your friendly weatherdude will be super busy tracking storms to keep you safe with my TV duties. For those who can’t tune in, the blog is all set with your storm tracking needs.
Round of heavy rain producing thunderstorms will be ongoing early today and some of these may be strong or severe. The prime severe weather threat appears to arrive this evening and will carry us into overnight. If we can get any sunshine this afternoon… look out. The atmosphere is primed for damaging winds, large hail and a few tornadoes.
Tuesday is likely to bring a few more rounds of strong and severe storms. In addition to the severe threat… torrential rainfall is expected and this can lead to flash flooding. Widespread rain amounts of 1″-3″ is likely through Tuesday with locally higher amounts a good bet.

serious cluster out west, HEAVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVY RAIN
Yes, numerous Flood Warnings and Flash Flood Warnings are out. Including for areas like Mayfield KY and just west of Nashville TN.
As the saying goes, Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
Radar looks wicked! Check out that second line forming.
Some decent little storms are already popping up over here in east ky
What is this white light flashing in the sky??
Thanks Chris. Looks like we are in for stormy weather and fromt looking at the radar, it looks like soon! Makes me feel better knowing that you are watching the weather, and will keep us updated. Every day, but especially on severe weather days like today, ou are appreciated more than you know! Have a great but safe Monday, everyone.
Since we’re expecting rounds of storms does that mean that they will rob the latter ones of energy or not? Thanks in advance!
Not a wx expert so this may be a bit rough an answer, but if there is sunshine after an earlier storm, then the combination of the sun’s heating and the humidity/etc from the previous storm can make things even more volatile for the next storm. As a poster mentioned yesterday, the April 27 2011 outbreak had wave after wave of strong storms during most of the day in the Chattanooga/Knoxville area that ended with a final storm wave that spawned multiple violent tornadoes in same area (including the borderline-EF5 twister at Ringgold Georgia and near Cleveland TN).
As a side note, a few storm systems can have their own energy that is largely independent of direct sunshine. This is especially true at night. Some F5/EF5 tornadoes have happened in the hours just before sunrise when there is of course no sun.
I was hoping it would storm by now in my part of Lexington . 🙁 Storms yesterday evening dissipated. Storms overnight lost their juice and storms so far this morning have dodged Lexington just to the south and north and the line behind has fizzled and were left with some light rain. Haven’t heard a single thunder yet. I don’t want anything severe, I just would like some action. It’s been awhile. Hopefully we get our turn later today or next couple of days.
Be careful what you wish for my friend
NWS predicted 7 am then 9 am so far all we have had is light rain. There will be lots of rain later but storms will be nothing more than a typical thunderstorm.
My side of Lexington is missing the juice too. Emptied my rain barrels and cleaned them yesterday, and they are only half full right now. I had planned on emptying the yellow pollen water and letting them fill again, but I don’t guess I will. Might just end up with bone dry rain barrels at this rate.
And now it is raining!
Clouds and rain will save most of northern and central KY from severe weather today, something isolated maybe, but nothing like what has been going in south and west of KY!
Good news we get the beneficial rains without the damaging and life threatning stuff!
1630Z (11:30 central time) update from SPC. If anything, the tornado threat has been scaled back a little for Kentucky, but still can’t rule out an isolated twister. The higher tornado threat is from southcentral Tennessee on to the southwest.

The higher threat for damaging winds extends into east Kentucky.
But cities like Bowling Green, Glasgow KY and perhaps even near Lexington could have higher chances of large hail:

Is the severe weather threat less now with all the rain today? My car says it is 62 here in Burgin.thank you!
I think its done as far as severe weather for the day never expected it to be much and it hasn’t been for most east of BG
Thank you Andy
Check out the KWC Twitter feed for brand new pics of wind damage in Evarts KY. This follows that Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the area.

Are the Mississippi storms heading toward Southeastern KY?
NO JAMES, hopefully the clouds will stabilize things here
I’m hoping so as well. Those storms look wild in Mississippi , I want nothing to do with them. Another question though, is the tornado threat for our area low? Even given that we have a tornado watch?
Non existent today. We may have some high winds tomorrow.
Thanks. The sun is out now., bad news? :/ lol
Na
Actually, there is a tornado threat in Kentucky for today, even if it’s a lot lower risk compared to further south. Here’s the latest from the Storm Prediction Center:

Indeed, a Tornado Warning (for radar indicated rotation) was recently out for some counties in extreme western Virginia – just west of Middlesboro KY.
Drat, that’s EAST of Middlesboro, not west.
That would fall in Northern TN as we are not included with Kentucky’s weather 😉
Well … the Tornado Warning graphic on the map was alongside the KY line and clearly in Virginia, not Tennessee. Perhaps Tennessee (especially Harrogate) was included earlier, I don’t know. Anyway, a second Tornado Warning was issued further to the east-northeast, still in Virginia but still almost on the Kentucky line. Furthermore, Chris Bailey mentioned on Twitter that radar saw some rotation over Harlan County KY when Evarts KY was hit. This all seem to indicate the SPC had good cause in issuing the earlier Tornado Watch for southeastern KY as well as western VA and east TN.
Now late this evening, a PDS (Particularly Dangerous Situation) Tornado Watch has been extended to include much of east Tennessee. Tornado/Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are already lighting up the map. As Chris Bailey just said on Twitter, these severe east TN storms could next move into southeast KY. Let’s hope these storms weaken, but so much for the “non-existent” threat.
yup no severe weather for SE KY
You guys are not looking at things clearly….Clearing in SE Ky. = destabilization = wild night of storms. Write it down.
It didn’t last long, not even 20 minutes before the clouds rolled back in.
Yup thats why the tornado watch was canceled.
Uhhhhh…..I’m not talking about the early watch. duh
Either way is things are weakening as they get closer
You guys think those storms out to our west are going to be bad coming into central Ky ?
Will tomorrow be worse? Thankful for not seeing much around here in Laurel/Whitley areas
