Good Friday and welcome to Kentucky Oaks Day. The run for the lilies at Churchill Downs is the second most attended horse race in the world and is behind only the Derby. We have a cool day taking shape, but things are looking much better for the run for the roses. Oh, and a big blast of summer is on the way next week. 🙂
We continue to feel the affects of the slow moving storm to our north. Gusty winds and cool temps continue today as readings warm toward the low 60s. Normal highs should be from 70-75. A mix of sun and clouds will be noted and there is the smallest chance for a shower.
Kentucky Derby Saturday will feature partly sunny skies with thermometers around 70 degrees. That should make for great weather at Churchill Downs.
A weak system is going to skirt by just to our north, but may come close enough to spark scattered showers and storms…
This leads us into a super warm pattern with temperatures going well above normal. Highs much of next week should be in the 80s. Check out the blast of heat pushing all this in the plains states…
Highs out there may reach 100 degrees. Ouch.
All of this is likely to lead us into a very stormy pattern for the middle and end of May.
Have a great day and take care.
No thank you. Oh well. Nothing anybody can do about it. Still. Yuck. What will humidity be like next week?
Just a question for anyone who wants to answer. Does a stormy pattern always lead to severe weather or severe weather outbreaks?
Severe weather depends on a number of things including instability of the atmosphere, A stormy pattern only requires some instability, but not necessarily enough to spark severe thunderstorms. Too much stormy activity can actually act to keep down the severe threat due to the broad storm activity soaking up the energy in the atmosphere and dispersing that over a broad area vs allowing that energy to be dispersed in small spots. So My answer is no, stormy patterns do not always lead to severe weather or severe weather outbreaks.
Thank you very much for answering my question. It never hurts to ask. 🙂
Ok, so there has only been one event of severe weather. With this warm up, it will likely be too warm for the plains in the west to get severe weather if/when the next cold front advances but for us we should watch out because the southerly flow should bring higher dew points and humidity available for severe weather. (Instability has been the main ingredient we’ve been missing for severe wx this season) I am not saying severe weather is going to happen, but it’s possible mainly in the north given how far the warmth is going to reach. Hopefully I’m wrong and the weather keeps having record low tornadoes for the rest of the year.
Beautiful morning! Temps not bad and not a lot of wind, at least not now. I will take the weekend weather and run with it! I will even take next week’s weather and run with it. I know that more then just me look forward to good weather and getting outdoors to enjoy it.
Thanks, Chris, for all you do. Have a Happy Friday everyone!
I hope today is the last of the cool, cloudy and clammy weather until November, had enough, 80s sound great!
Looks like April and May will get close to making up for the cold in January and February before we even get to summer. April was 3.1 above average in Lexington.
