Good Friday to one and all. Rounds of showers and thunderstorms are working across the state today and this is kicking off a very active period. It’s not a washout of a weekend, but the threat for a boomer or two will be with us through Mother’s Day. Big changes are lurking after that.
Let’s break it all down with the headlines…
– Storms will come at us in waves today into tonight. We do run the risk of a few strong or severe storms… especially across western parts of the state.
– Winds will be very gusty all day and could reach 35mph at times. Highs will hit the low 80s in the east with mid and upper 70s elsewhere.
– Scattered storms will be possible for Saturday into Mother’s Day. Highs Saturday will be in the middle 70s with upper 70s to near 80 on Sunday. This is not a washout and you will have several dry hours to get out and enjoy.
– Monday will find temps returning to the 80s on a very strong southwesterly wind. Isolated storms will be possible.
– A strong cold front enters the picture on Tuesday and that could bring a line of strong or severe storms sweeping eastward across the state.
– Much cooler and unsettled conditions move in for the middle and end of next week.
Let’s get to tracking today’s storms and the severe threat…
Today’s Risk Area
Current Watches
Have a great day and take care.

Thanks Chris. Rain will be welcome in the Northern parts of our Commonwealth as CVG has not had measurable precip thus far in May. Of course we had a ton of rain right at the end of April just like everybody else.
I’m glad we aren’t going to have yet another 90 degree day this week 4 was enough 🙂
Agree with ya, save that stuff for July and August! I’ll take all the 70s I can get!
If people want 70s all summer, then Canada is a good choice.
Who mentioned 70s all summer?
I for one don’t like paying high utility bills for AC, so 70s is a good thing for people who need all the cash they can save when they can!
So true.Need a break from the utility bills. This winter really eat up some funds and I always like having a bit of a break before the heat rolls in and the cooling bills have to start.
Light rain here for now and its in the mid 70s so not to bad at all.I will take it over 90.We will have plenty of time through July-August-September to roast.
All true, I know some folks like the really warm weather but that comes with a cost for most us folks who can’t tolerate the heat very well!
My utility bills are MUCH higher in the winter vs. the summer. Bring on the heat, I’m not scared.
Chris said on the 6pm news after next weeks cool down no mid 80s the rest of the month of may 🙂
Sounds COOL !
Thanks Chris. Glad to hear the weekend is not going to be a washout. Got a very important birthday party to go to tomorrow afternoon! ;). But we could use a little rain too. Have a great Friday, everyone!
A sign of things to come for our area later on?
A watch (perhaps Severe Thunderstorm Watch) may be likely for southern Illinois and eastern Missouri, just shy of western parts of Kentucky and Tennessee – for now. Already a few Severe Thunderstorm Warnings up for southern Missouri.
The good news is that the tornado threat is rather low, if with a more moderate threat of large hail and strong damaging winds.
And of course, the Severe Thunderstorm Watch is issued as soon as I did the previous post 😉 .
This watch actually includes parts of far western Kentucky and southern Indiana, along with parts of Illinois and Missouri.
I can see those storms on radar, looks like they are getting very strong, could get a little nasty in parts of Ky later on today??
All I am saying is that it does no good to complain about the weather. I myself prefer a moderately warm summer with enough rain to water crops and fend off drought, but I know it won’t happen that way every year. All I can do is adjust accordingly.
And that’s reasonable. I guess there is a bit of rankling when others are told to move elsewhere, Canada for example, for giving their weather preferences. In February I was told to go north if I liked cold weather, but I like all the seasons, and I like Kentucky, and I do like milder summers, but that’s just me, and it is totally fine for you to like hotter summers. Anyway, cooler summer here is relative. You will get your hot weather I’m afraid. It may not break heat records this year, but the pools will warm up. They always do. While all you summer lovers enjoy the heat and the bugs and the sweat, I’ll dream of autumn while secretly enjoying summer too. 🙂
A few tornado warnings showing up in south east Missouri, West KY could be in the line of fire soon!
WOW, Frankfort just had a wind just over 50mph and heavy rain lightning, these storms are near severe limits, lookout east of frankfort!
I do not recall going this long without a big storm. Last one was last summer. We miss a lot of snow, but missing the big bad storms are good misses :). Just wondering when the lucky streak ends…..
