Good Saturday everyone. Friday evening turned out to be a wild one for much of central Kentucky as some rare supercell thunderstorms made their way across the region. These spawned numerous tornado warnings across the region. Thankfully… it does not appear that we had any twisters out of this.
Still… we had some of the greatest storm pics you will ever see out of Kentucky flood the email box. Take a look at the sampling of pics…
Wilmore
Mercer County
Franklin County
Anderson County
Take a look at the size of the hail that came from the supercell in Anderson County…
If you are into severe storms… I highly reccomend you save those images as you simply do not get those kinds of storms around here very often.
Numerous reports of severe weather came in from across the state… yet a watch was never issued by the Storm Prediction Center. They honestly had one of the worst showings I have ever seen them have on Friday. The initially had much of the region in the risk for severe weather… storms start going up with warnings coming out and the SPC decides to remove the risk area from the state.
Shortly after that… they put out a mesoscale discussion saying a watch would likely be needed soon for parts of central and northern Kentucky. The watch NEVER came. A few hours later… they put parts of central Kentucky back in the slight risk for severe weather then send out another discussion saying that a watch would likely not be needed. This was a poor effort to say the least!!
As far as the future weather around here is concerned…
– Showers and thunderstorms will slowly move east of the area today. The best chance will be across the east. Highs will range from the low 80s west to the 70s east.
– A warm and humid pattern takes hold Sunday and will last through next week. Highs will reach well into the 80s as the muggy factor really increases!
– With the warmth and humidity… a daily threat for showers and thunderstorms will be possible. With a lot of water available in the atmosphere… any storm that goes up next week will have the threat to produce flash flooding.
– Tropical weather fans… keep an eye off the southeast coast in the coming days.
I will have updates as needed so check back through the weekend. Have a great Saturday and take care.
Thanks, Chris. Been reading all week, but too busy to comment. We had a few showers yesterday, but never got a storm, that I am aware of. This morning, we have mostly cloudy skies, but the sun is peeking through now. And or temp is at 64. Hope we see some sun for the next several days. Some gardens are getting waterlogged….
My husband and I stood and watched that cell in Mercer move through last nite. It was so strange looking with the circular shape to the cloud and the center kept dipping down then sucking back up. Wild. And it wasn’t raining where we were, it was blue sky. Thanks for the pics. It was cool to see it again this morning.
If any of you all took those pics, can i e-mail them the nws, and put the on my site? thanks.
I think Chris can do the job of the Prediction Center much better than they can. Chris you do a great job of keeping us informed and I think you deserve a raise or at the least, a bonus-say a trip to Hawaii! Thanks so much for all you do!
Well that wiped out any rainfall deficit for us. Lexington was down 2″ for the year, now we’re up a tad. Lot of rain this month.
Rain, Rain, go Away!
Thanks for all the updates, CB.
I criticis the SPC’s stupidity yesterday on my websitee. Check it out, just click on my name!!!!!
I too, kept waiting for at least a watch to be issued, the next thing we know, the siren is blasting. I’m just glad we have the blog to turn to. Thanks Chris and all you other weather guys and gals that post for keeping us informed.
tornadolarkin, I took the pic from mercer county feel free to use it on your site or to send to nws. I have three more pics if you send me your email adress I will send then to you.
Hey Michael
Did that storm not scare you at all? I seriously got nervous with the wind going in all directions. My house looks like it has been pressure washed on all sides.
I have lived in Lexington since Aug 96. I lived on the south side of town at Tates Creek/Man O War area up until 2004 when I moved the northwest Lex. I don’t remember seeing the types of storms on the south side of town that I have witnessed on this side of town. Just something I’ve noticed.
Thanks!!!!! My e-mail adress is tornadolarkin@gmail.com
check out this video of the hailstorm in Oklahoma City from someone in what looks to be a high rise downtown?

The tornado a few years back ripped siding, shingles, and screen off the back and side of my house… so this was nothing 🙂

Hi, I found your post really helpful. It helped me all the way in completing my assignment, I am also giving a reference link of your blog in my case study. Thanks for posting such informative content. Keep posting.
Another great post in this series C I’m finding that when I write a “better” headline I’m actually simply following your advice. Above all else C keeping it reader focused helps alot even if its a mediocre headline.
Dude.. I am not much into reading, but somehow I got to read lots of articles on your blog. Its amazing how interesting it is for me to visit you very often.
