Good Tuesday gang and thanks for blogging. The threat for showers and thunderstorms will be on the uptick for the next several days and a few of those may be on the strong side. Speaking of… parts of the plains states were ravaged by killer tornadoes Monday afternoon and evening. One of the storms should be dubbed the “Twister” tornado for reasons I will explain later.
Around here… a warm front is swinging northeastward through the area early today. A round of showers and thunderstorms is along this front. Warm and humid air will filter in from the southwest. Skies will clear out some through the day and this may fuel some more scattered afternoon and evening storms. Track all of today’s action here…
The Storm Prediction Center can’t make it’s mind up on whether or not to include the area in a slight risk for severe storms. Everytime they have a new forecaster come on board.. they do something totally different for our region. You can see their latest thoughts on it all here…
The stage is set for rounds of showers and thunderstorms through Friday. It is not going to rain the entire time by any stretch of the imagination. Locally heavy amounts of rain will be possible during this time… especially if the same areas get in on repeat action. Strong and severe storms will be possible as well. Exactly when and where remains to be seen until we get a little closer to each round of storms.
As I mentioned earlier… parts of Oklahoma were demolished by tornadoes Monday evening. One of the tornadoes touched down in the town of Wakita. That was town made famous by the movie Twister back in 1996. You know… the scene where Aunt Meg is rescued from the ruble…
Well… here take a look at what hit the town of Wakita Monday evening…
That is a multi vortex tornado that was captured on film by storm chasers and the video is simply amazing! So why should we call this the “Twister ” storm? We have the same town being hit as the movie did… Wakita. We have video of the tornado via storm chasers which the movie was based on. Now, if we only had one more connection to the film. How about this? The release date of the movie.. May 10th, 1996. That’s right… the movie was released on the same exact date in which the actual tornado hit the town featured in the movie. That is pretty wild!
I will have updates as needed so be sure to check back. Have a great Tuesday and take care.
Holy crap Chris that is pretty freaky!
I saw Twister at the theatre in Frankfort, KY. During the movie, there was apparently a severe storm outside and the power went out at the movie theatre! We sat in the dark for a little while…that was spooky!
I’ll give you another “Twister” similarity. I read on some of the internet weather forums that Vortex 2 might have gotten a probe directly inside a tornado yesterday. “Dorthy’s Flying!”
BTW, Tom Skilling is out storm chasing this week in the plains for WGN as well as doing special reports on the advancement of Meteorology of the last few decades. Check it out on WGN and http://www.chicagoweathercenter.com/severe/stormchase/
Wow, now that is quite a coincidence.
Chris Bailey…..human encycolpedia.
Hard to tell what we are going to get over the next few days. Seems like the forecast keeps changing. Will be interesting to see if we see any of this outbreak weather eventually into KY?
Wow, Chris. that is some freaky coincidence! And what a tornado! IF I could see something like that, without it being a risk to people and property, it would be pretty cool.
Well, what is coming our way? Are we expecting severe storms, or just garden variety t-storms, and showers? Guess we will wait and see.
Keep an eye on the weather, everyone, and thanks, Chris. Have a great day!
Unfortunately, the movie “Twister” was absolutely riddled with scenes of dramatic liscense and just plain old misinformation. It painted a very poor and inaccurate picture of a truly amazing phenomena of the natural world along with those who study it.
Sniffing dirt…really?
from the movie twister i wonder if theres actually tornados that get that big would love to be a tornado chaser
only 224 days until winter…LOL…:)
THANKFULLY!! I’d like to enjoy summer first before I start thinking about that countdown… 😉
Me too. I’ve had enough winter weather to last another ten years for me. 🙂
Thanks for the trivia blast, CB…I am a trivia fan. Love the movie, too…even
if it did use dramatic license. That’s what entertainment is for.
Besides, that’s the safest way to watch a tornado.
I loved that movie, and I agree that it’s the safest way to watch a tornado.
