Good Sunday evening everyone. We continue to see major flooding across much of Kentucky. Two day rain totals are running anywhere from 4″-10″ across a large part of the area. The severe threat is also ramping back up… this time for the eastern half of the state where a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 9pm.
Here is a look at the counties included…
Here is a look at the current warnings…
Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats this evening.
We continue to see a dangerous situation in regards to the major flooding that is going on across the state. Numerous roads are closed because of high water and we have had reports of many high water rescues. More torrential rains will be likely through the evening and areas that have missed out on the flooding so far may see some high water into tonight.
You can track all the storms here…
Keep leaving the latest updates on how the weather is where you live. Take care.
Chris…I sure do appreciate the txt alerts, twitter updates, and all the updates online…Sure would be nice to see ya back in the viewing area again…
hmmm….didnt lauren Raimer move to Memphis…does that mean an opening at kyt????…
CHANT OR RANT!!!!….LOL…
BRING CHRIS BACK…BRING CHRIS BACK…
Looks like rain is progressing east of I-75 into eastern and south eastern ky…I sure hope we here in the MNTS. dont get those catastrophic rain totals..it would be unbelievable with that kind of rain coming out of the MNTS!!!

Shane what kind of rain totals do you see us east of I75 getting anything close to what the poor folks west of I75?
I SO AGREE!!!!!!!!
WE WANT CHRIS, WE WANT CHRIS!
you better get the pontoons mounted under that house ole buddy I see the cumberland river taking on new heights. if we get those kind of totals here….the 1977 flood will look like a baby!!! and that flood actually went over the flood wall!!!
……
Just getting reports that dunaway dam could fell in metcalfe co…evacuations under way!!!!…
Andy the GFS is showing about 2 inches in eastern KY over the next 24 hours, while the SREF and NAM are showing about an inch to an inch and a half. I’m hoping it stays on the low end of that. As you know 2 inches in the mountains can cause problems.
TWC is reporting imminent failure of the Dunham Lake Dam in Metcalfe County. That according to the NWS in Louisville and Metcalfe co. emergency management.
Report that Elkhorn Campground in Frankfort, on Elkhorn Creek at the Forks has been evacuated. This is on Georgetown Road.
Thanks Chris as usual you are watching over us even on your days off and I appreciate it.
Shane,Chris Andy Wxman,Tim,Mj or Mitch what are your thoughts on the Big Sandy river in Pikeville,I can see it from my Br window there is a bottom between us but I have seen that bottom feel fast before? Thanks in advance for you any thoughts?
http://water.weather.gov/ahps2/hydrograph.php?wfo=jkl&gage=pkyk2&view=1,1,1,1,1,1,1,1
Right now the river is forecast to crest Tuesday morning around 15 feet below flood stage. We’ll have to see how much rain we get in the next 24 hours to see if that changes.
At least 2 dozen roads closed and subdivisions being evacuated in Georgetown per our local paper.
Unrelenting downpour here in Winchester. Never seen it rain so hard for so long. Thundering again.
Saw water shooting like geysers five feet in the air from storm drain pipes behind St. Agatha School. Downspouts were spraying water like fountains, and water was shooting in the air from where the downspouts enter the storm drain pipes at ground level. Amazing pressure from the roof runoff, and there’s no place for it to go. Storm drains are full, street water is jumping curbs and sidewalks.
I was just sitting on my porch. It feels like the calm before the storm.
Spooky feeling.
A couple of light rain showers here in Corbin. Not much right now, a little drizzle, if that. Hoping we dodge the heaviest of rains.
Oops, just started raining. I hope and pray Eastern KY doesn’t get a lot of rain.
Heaviest rain of this system thus far just went over. 1.5 ” in about a half hour bringing my total to 6.75″ Now that was agully washer!!!!
Looks like a nasty secondary line is developing in Mississippi and lifting northeast. Could be more trouble later.
Oh, my goodness. Some guy on the Weather Channel just said Eastern KY could see six inches of rain. Goodbye
Hazard and other towns if this happens.
Still pouring here in downtown. Where are you, Joe? What part of the county?
Craney creek is out of it’s banks, road flooded, timber crashing into the bridges, can’t get out of our holler, no idea what Morehead must be like, expecting worst case flooding sooner or later. Thanks Chris for all you do for us.
County Line on Lexington AVE/ Winchester RD Verna Hills
And it is still pouring here. Keeps it up much longer and Winchester might float away.
looks to me as if all the activity to the south of EKY is disappearing!
I really don’t see much of a flood threat for us in SE KY tonight anymore guys.
Could you imagine the amount of junk that’ll be floating in the Kentucky River tomorrow?
Please say you are kidding!
areas on a line from somserset to morehead will continue to get repeat thunderstorms through the evening, flood warnings already in effect only going to get worse. BWG just passed 10 inches for this 2 day event.
I’m on Maple Street/Boone Ave. Every basement in town is flooded. Sumps can’t keep up, storm drains can’t carry it away.
I finally made it out of Middle Tennessee and back into central KY. At my house in Anderson Co…we are at 6.80″ of rain and it’s still falling…

Notice the ADDITIONAL 2 to 3″. That is massive here in anderson county. I went out looking at streams, creeks, and rivers across the county, and most of them were in places they shouldn’t have been
I promise that is what the man said.
But Ryan said he doesn’t think that will happen. Thank God.
Not much of anything going on atm at my house and radar doesn’t look like it will be to awfully bad later i guess we will have to see if we get trained like folks west of 75 did
It looks like there is more forming in western Tennessee, am I right?
The western bypass in Winchester is flooded as are several of the roads and businesses around there. The BP station is flooded and is getting close to the fire station.
The western bypass in Winchester is flooded. Several roads and businesses nearby are also flooded including the BP station. The fire station is very close to being flooded as well.
The western bypass in Winchester is underwater.
My son and his family live 82 miles from Nashville. I’ve been concerned about them, but they are o.k.
Still, just a couple of light rain showers have moved through Corbin. Nothing here right now and it seems as though the winds have died down. I think we had more rain yesterday than today.
by the looks of the radar returns, MAYBE,extreme south east ky. may escape the torential rain amounts…so far today only one scattered shower that happened abput an hr. ago here in Barbourville.
check this out:
…RAINIEST DAY IN NASHVILLE`S HISTORY…
AS OF 400 PM, NASHVILLE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT HAS MEASURED 7.14
INCHES TODAY. THIS BREAKS THE RECORD FOR MOST RAIN IN A SINGLE
CALENDAR DAY IN THE CITY`S HISTORY. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 6.60
INCHES SET ON SEPTEMBER 13, 1979.
THE TWO-DAY RAINFALL TOTAL NOW STANDS AT 13.46 INCHES. THIS
OBLITERATES THE PREVIOUS TWO DAY RECORD OF 6.68 INCHES SET ON
SEPTEMBER 13-14, 1979.
Will East Ky particuliarly Paintsville see any severe storms or the flooding that other areas to our west have seen?
Mitch will morgan co see flooding?
WILL PIKE COUNTY GET IN ON ANY TORRENTIAL RAIN, FLOODING, OR SEVERE STORMS??? WE ARE VERY CONCERNED CONSIDERING ALL THE FLOODING WE’VE HAD IN THE PAST YEAR. JUST WONDERING. THANKS AND STAY SAFE!
Thanks to all! I know this is probably a repetitious question especially if you’re a snow lover, but how would this measure in snow totals? Weatherman? Anyone know? I know this usually comes up when we get a lot of rain, but I am curious!
An absolute wash out in Pulaski Co. right now…wow!
22 inches of rain!!! being reported in parts of west central Tn. between nashville and memphis…UNBLIEVABLE!!!
I believe southeast ky. may dodge the bullet..I HOPE!!
Using the 10 to 1 ratio, Lexington would have received over 5 feet.
every inch of rain is around 10 inches of snow. that is basically it, and it depends on where you are. nashville would have had 130″ of snow
It depends, but a good rule of thumb is 10 inches of snow= one inch of rain!
Oh dear! More torrential rain? My ceiling is caving in here in Jessamine County…Insurance adjusters are going to be busy tomorrow.
It’s getting very bright outside here in NW LEX with some breaks in the clouds…
KIND OF ODD, sort of a dry slot has been running from the platau of east tn. to se. ky from whitley, knox, clay, areas..its rain to the west and to the east..not that im complaining or anything its just wild to think so much rain has fallen to my north and west, and here in my area just barely enough to wet the ground today…its a wild thing to comprehend…if it would have been snow, talk about being aggrevated..lol..
It looks like this is going to be over in Lex within the next hour. Twelve bad hours for eastern Kentucky to come, but nothing like the last 36-48 hours here. I feel like those people on the ark at the end of the movie 2012.
Plenty of rain here in Laurel Co, Tim… Off and on heavy downpours since around 4:30pm. So the rain really isn’t too far away from you.
No huge plumes of rain coming from the south to really cause any damage here in SEKY, but I’m starting to wonder about that line moving into C TN.
It looks as if it may come through here if the system stays stationary enough.
Most models are still predicting up to 2″ for us over here on the East side so we will just have to wait and see.
Any thoughts from you other SE Kentuckians out there?
it kinda of reminds me of how our winters have been lol some how we just miss out but on this i am thankful we are missing out
I feel the same, Dr. forbes on the weather channel is saying the system will start speeding up and move on out later on.. so I would say here in south east ky. we will miss the MAJOR FLOODING RAINS..but anything is sure possible…
Hey chas…I hear Jim Cantore is on his way to east ky…LOL…get your t.v. face on…lol…Im sending him to your house to do live update….
It appears Southeast Ky. will be spared.. the models were right when they showed a sharp cutoff down here.. If we would have gotten 6-8 inches of rain down here in the mountains it would have been a total disaster. We only got about 4 inches last May and that was a disaster, I can’t even imagine doubling that..
Pumping basements on my street. Started with bucket brigades till folks could round up a couple of big pumps. Storm drains underwater – nowhere for it to go. Water shooting through basement walls due to hydraulic pressure. Bypass Rental was full of water, no computers up, clerks renting pumps on a handshake. God love ’em!
Looking good here for Martin County…a light shower or so. Should be okay here. Looks as if it’s missing us.
Schools closing in my area……pray ours isn’g going to be one of them! 🙂
looks like another flare up just to the se. of nashville, LOOK OUT SOUTH CENTRAL KY…looks like another round is gonna move north into the area somewhere…
TWC is reporting some homes being evacuated in eastern ky. somewhere around or south of morehead..anyone in that area here this?
Major flooding on the Liberty bypass in Casey County. Coke/Pepsi machines are floating down the bypass. The Green River is apparently still rising. Several businesses under seveal feet of water.
MAJOR flooding in Liberty, KY. Almost all of the bypass businesses are under water from the Green River.
Chris, why do ALL of my posts go to moderation?
2 fatalities being reported in madison and barren counties…this being reported by ky.emergency management on the weather channel
it is true, just down from me and in town, very serious here. pray.
Sorry about the frustration, it has been a really tough day for a whole lot of people.
Thanks to all! I know this is probably a repetitious question especially if you’re a snow lover, but how would this measure in snow totals? Weatherman? Anyone know? I know this usually comes up when we get a lot of rain, but I am curious!
Not sure, but does anyone see this speeding up? I know the backside is sliding slowly away from NASH/LEX but I’m still seeing a nearly stationary system.
I’m not an expert, but this is what I see happening tonight as far as the flow of this moisture is concerned… I’m not sure if it will hold in intensity, but we will be seeing some of that stuff to our south.
Graphic: http://i43.tinypic.com/i37315.jpg
Joseph
I think the system recognizes certain words and it will put it into moderation. For example, I used the word gra$$ and it moderated me every time.
Average ratio is 10 to 1 so 5 inches of rain would be about 50 inches of snow.
please Lord, make it stop.
It is a mess out there have 7.5 inches in western estil co. Why is the local news media not covering this?? We have people that have no idea where to get help nor any info on when the next heavy rains will be here… We are getting all of our info from the national weather and the net.. Just a shame that if a basketball star had signed on to play for uk they would have broke in with that info i promise.. Just my thoughts…
BEREA IS AWFUL! That I know of, 499 is closed both ways and White Chapel Road COMPLETELY underwater near 25! HUGE LIGHTENING and roars of thunder again!
It’s over for all. I have sent all of the species back from whence thy came. I will continue to refuse Cardinals. I am, after all, Noah. No Cardinals.
Any bets on EKU or Morehead canceling classes tomorrow?
If any of you have any flood pics or videos… email them to me. chrisbaileyweather@yahoo.com
Severe flloding in Pulaski County. some people are being evacuated from their homes by flat bottomed boat. At our house, the sewer system has overflowed, and we have one flooded bathroom, and it is coming up from under the commode. We are currently using a shop vac to try and get ahead of it. This, after a week of hubby in hospital, trying to pass a kidney stone, and failing, to this. All of our neighbors around me are flooded, too. Our bathroom floor is ruined. thank goodness we do not have carpet in the hall.
I jave seen major flooding on hwy 27, Slate Branch Road, the cable company is under about four feet of water, and the car dealership I work at had one end under water. The owner, and the sales manager were out moving the new cars out of the water before it got in them.
This is very dangerous. Please be very careful, and cautious.
Serious flooding in Boyle County continues. My rain gauge has measured 6.46 inches past 22 hours. Southern parts of Herrington Lake have risen in excess of 15 feet with currents of 20mph plus with docks, boats trees and unknown items floating upstream, while the shoreline flows downstream……Thats only a glimpse of all the water problems around the county……….The shoreline (ground) appears unstable.
Looking at the radar on http://www.wkyt.com looks like we are in for a lot more rain, this better start moving east!
no!!!! not East, I don’t want more rain!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! South, go South!!!!!!!!!
CoffeeLady if you need any help send me an email and I’ll be right down, only ten minutes away.
madison county schools closed tomorrow.
Does anyone know anything about the Creekside Realty apartments in Morehead? I tried coming back home tonight and wasn’t allowed into town. Would like an update on that area if anyone is from around there!
Some of the heaviest rain I’ve ever seen just started here.
Actually I have to retract that offer, we’re not surrounded by water here as well with the roads closed. Sorry hon, if it clears and you still need help let me know.
Rain coming through the big hole in my ceiling faster and faster….How much longer is this going to last in Jessamine County? I suspect at least one room in my house will be completely ceilingless by morning.

Look at that storm complex building back in central tn….
I was hoping I was seeing that WRONG Jared lol………but i agree 🙁
The road where i live here in morgan co is under water up 650 big mandy my daughter is at work and cannot get home Chris is the heavy rain about over for us?
Really seeing the eastward movement now!
But it seems to be backbuilding to the west… This thing just don’t want to leave
We have serious flooding problems here in Pulaski County. Many roads flooded, and sewer system cannot handle the rain. I know….my bathroom is flooded, and my bathtub in the other bathroom has abouf 4 inches of water in it.
Some parts of 27 have water running over them, about 6 inches deep, and many roads are closed. the car dealership I work at has half the lot under water, as well as the cable company lot next door having about 4 feet of water in it.
Looked at the radar and it looks like we are not out of the woods yet. More rain coming down now, and its getting heavier again. Be safe, folks.
will be thinking of you Coffee so far not been near as bad as it could have been at my house atm 1.48 inches of rain since it started
People being evacuated from homes in flat bottom boats by emergency management and volunteer firefighters. GOD BLESS THESE PEOPLE. They don’t just fight fires, they are there no matter what. It is untelling how many lives have been saved today because of these selfless men and women who are willing to do this.
THANK YOU ALL, FIREFIGHTERS AND EMERGENCY PERSONEL. YOU PEOPLE ROCK.
Thanks for the reply rabbit!
coming down fast in Knox Co.
It’s raining steady and hard here at East Point, even heard a bit of thunder.
I hope everyone stays safe, please be careful wherever you are.
You’re absolutely right Coffeelady! Thanks for bringing this up! I’m sure they all would rather be snug at home with their own families but choose to help others in need instead.
Looks like a very heavy band of thunderstorms will impact pulaski/laurel county soon.
yep, its really coming down hard here at my house in bimble as well
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE JACKSON KY
1149 PM EDT SUN MAY 2 2010
SHORT TERM
UPDATED
MESOSCALE UPDATE…HEAVY RAIN BAND IS NOW SHIFTING EVER SO SLIGHTLY
TO THE EAST. THIS MEANS THE FLOOD THREAT IS INCREASING ACROSS THE
REMAINDER OF OUR FORECAST AREA. VERY HEAVY RAINFALL ASSOCIATED WITH
THUNDERSTORMS IN TENNESSEE WILL SHIFT NORTHEAST OVER THE NEXT FEW
HOURS INTO THE HEART OF OUR CWA. OBSERVED 1-HR PRECIP RATES WITH
THIS CONVECTION ARE OVER 1 INCH PER HOUR… AND IN SOME CASES WELL
OVER 1 INCH PER HOUR… AND EXCEEDS OUR FLASH FLOOD GUIDANCE VALUES
EASILY. THEREFORE ADDITIONAL FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS ARE LIKELY TONIGHT
TO THE EAST OF THE COUNTIES CURRENTLY UNDER AREAL FLOOD WARNINGS.
ryan, that is something I did NOT need to hear…..but it is probably a good thing that I did. People are really hurting right now, and I hope everyone will keep them in your prayers. Folks in Tennessee have had it even rougher than us,
At this point, one can only be thankful that it has not been quite that bad here,
Now, to inject a little humor into the situation……WHAT drought???
It is coming down very hard right now in downtown Paintsville.
Moderate to heavy rain most of the evening here in London. Not sure about roads, but the creeks around here are out of their banks. The batch of rain moving in from TN looks like another 1-2.”
Thanks Chris. Got my GREAT son in law here, and since the hubby is fighting with a kidney stone, that is a good thing. there are five houses right here that all backed up,and have flooded.
Next step will be to TRY to find a plumber to get here tomorrow and reseal the commode, I guess.
Wow. Really pouring now. Looks like a lot more coming out of Tennessee.
According to the Mesonet data, Johnson County has gotten almost a quarter of an inch in the past 10 minutes.
Hello coffeelady, I normally reside in the Twin lakes subdivision off of 1247, but have been stranded in Casey County since this AM due to flooding. The entire bypass business district is underwater in Liberty due to the Green River flexing its muscle unlike anything I have ever seen before. It is really bad here and as you mentioned it is hard to believe that in many parts of Tennessee it is actually worse especially from the Nashville/Franklin areas back to Jackson/Memphis. This is truly something historic. Not the kind of history you like to see being made, but history nonetheless.
radar est = .5″ Wow
Morehead will have no choice if folks aren’t allowed to enter the city.
For anyone in the Cold Hill area of Laurel County. The road in front of Cold Hill School is flooded and they are not letting people pass through there right now.
Coming down hard just north of Hazard.
Over 9″ according to my guage in Pulaski Co. Serious flooding throughout the county.
Unreal!!! Be safe.
Does the red on the radar mean thunderstorms?
Another crazy stat! I think this makes the third or fourth top ten daily rainfall record out of the top ten since records have been kept. One day in Sept 2006….then Oct 2007…..and now May 2010. What’s interesting is these last few historical rainfalls are SO close together!
Well, here we go again. colming down again in Somerset, and flash flood warning was just issued for us until 6:30AM…and the radar does NOT look very friendly at the moment.
Have you ever tried to sleep with a shop vac running? Not an easy task. Hope you guys east of us get movement on this thing before you get too rained on. Keeping my eye on the radar.
Chris, isn’t it about time for an update?
Pulaski county is on a two hour delay, as of right now. If there is more rain overnight, they may call it in the morning.
anyone know where i can listen to local police scanners online?
Eastern kentucky is going to get hammered tonight, even if we only get 2-3 inches there will probably be major flooding.
Pulaski County is on a two hour delay at this time. don’t know if it will change or not, but if it keeps raining, it very well could, by morning. Flash flood warning now until 6:30 AM.
Char, don’t know about storms, but it means heavy rain. And we are having some right now, as well as thunder and lightning.
Raining hard in Pike co, got some ponding going on in the yard… Waiting on info about the creeks.
Thank you. You are having it very bad. Take care, Coffeelady.
