Good Sunday afternoon everyone. A significant flood event is underway across much of Kentucky with the highest impact being central and western parts of the state. A SLOW moving band of showers and thunderstorms has set up shop in a southwest to northeast fashion across the area and this is dropping a tremendous amount of rain.
Check out the amount of rain that has fallen since midnight…
Much of central Kentucky is closing in on 4″ since midnight and that is going on top of the 2″ or so of rain from Saturday. This is causing major flash flooding for much of this region with numerous roads closed and homes and businesses being threatened. The situation may get much worse before it gets better as I don’t think this line is going to move very much until we get into the evening hours. If anything… more in the way of thunderstorms may start to fire up along the leading edge of this band. You can watch the conveyor belt of moisture here…
The threat for severe weather is still with us into the evening hours. Here is the latest map from the Storm Prediction Center…
Help out me and your fellow bloggers by posting any flooding and severe weather reports you have from your part of the world. The blog is having a few moderation issues with comments so keep trying if that’s what you encounter when you leave a comment.
I will continue to use Twitter to post any rapid fire updates and you can follow me @Kentuckyweather. Those comments also show up in the top right hand corner of this blog. Email me any severe weather or flooding pics: chrisbaileyweather@yahoo.com
Take care.
so far the only severe weather we have had at my house is humidity
This is the winter snowstorm I kept hoping for… it came 3 months late!
We have had a ton of rain in Richmond with numerous closed roads. Be safe.
Nothing going in yet in Pikeville,I hope it stays that way but afraid it won’t.
Alexandria drive is flooded inbetween Leestown & Old Frankfort, as expected.
And it keeps on raining here in Gtown. Lots of standing water on the roads. Getting pretty bad here.
We’ve had a little over 3.50″ since Midnight Friday, but I think our local (Bardstown) media’s rain gauge needs to be checked, because it’s been absolutely pouring non-stop since dawn yesterday morning. I would head to “Lowe’s” for ark-buildng supplies, but afraid I might drown enroute! LOL! 🙂
Been a constant, steady rain since I got up this morning. There is standing water on the road. Glad I don’t need to go anywhere. Good day to nap.
Hasn’t stopped raining at our end of Rowan county. Craney creek is @ it’s banks, not topped yet. I’m glad I got a pasture between me and that creek. Temp got to 73* and is going down slowly. When this is over our creek will be over the banks, Laurel and Minor will add to our misery. Everybody please be careful today.
It looks to me like the line of storms have moved back north. Bad new for us here. Earlier today it looked like it was moving out. Wind just really kicked up. Weather radio just went off.
I must repeat my previous post. My vessel is now complete. The species have assembled. We will not take any Cardinals.
Make sure you take a male and female from each species you decide to load. Remember, snipes are a-sexual….
Report of a woman and her children swept down the river on Rube Brown Rd in the McKinney area of Lincoln County. Dive teams dispatched. 🙁
Well, so far the NAM that showed the sharp cutoff has been spot on.. But i’m sure we’ll get ours here in East Ky. later on today and tonight.
Wow… please keep us updated on this Jeff. 🙁
Thanks for the update, Chris. I saw where it looks like the rain is just sitting in one area of the state, and traversing over the same places. Right now, we are on the very cusp of it. In fact, the western part of Pulaski County looks to be getting rain now, so I don’t figure it will be very long until we see it, too.
As of this morning, we had gotten 2.4 inches of rain, not including what fell here this morning during the storms that moved through. Looks ike we will be adding to our totals, as well.
Sun is trying to break out here. Hope it doesn’t make it, as that will just make things worse.
Everyone be safe this afternoon and evening.
Yeap, and I’m already prepared. I live in Pikeville and I’ve gotten everything tied down and ready.
Just wondering if anyone can tell me if more rain/storms will follow/develop behind this line once it moves east this evening? If so, will it be more like scattered/isolated severe storms or another band or….? I am supposed to leave to drive to Florida tonight (around 8) with some friends and am just wondering if we should postpone them until tomorrow so we can drive thru during the day. Thanks in advance.
My son who lives in Bowling Green says that just down the street from his house there is a car with water up to its door handle.
Hey guys, what time do we think this line will leave the Lexington metro? Once it pushes thru will we have any storms/rain behind it? Thanks
I live in Richmond and we’ve had some bad flooding. My backyard looks like a lake. Glad I live on top of a hill.
I could barely hear the radio traffic, but I believe all victims have been rescued.
All three victims WERE RESCUED and are being taken to a local hospital.
Thats good news Jeff. Thanks for passing it along.
the erieness of threatening storms here in knox co. is kinda scary.. the humidity values are through the roof!! with temps. in the low 80’s, partly cloudy skies…I sure hope we don’t get any severe weather, especially after dark!!..
I just was watching on TWC where a river somewhere went from 3ft. yesterday to over their record stage of 31Ft. and the gauge went out, due to apparently washing away!!! but their projections was for it to go over 40 ft.!!!! I know there are gonna be so many reports of homes, businesses, and unfortunately lives lost..All we can do is hope and pray for the best…
>>>> I HATE THIS KIND OF WEATHER !! <<< …..give me a good ole fashioned snowstorm anyday of the week!!!……
Thank God for that!!
over 9 inches total in bowling green worst may finally be east of here. Somerset area looks to be the target this afternoon.
Nothing but drizzle here in east Somerset all day, 15 miles west they’re getting heavy rain. The cutoff is that sharp and moving that slow.
Do you think far EKY is still in the “flood zone” fore tonight?
Stay safe Mitch. Yes, it looks like we are getting ready to see it now. IN fact, it just started raining here. Not heavy yet, but we have had heavy rains earlier today. guess now we watch and wait to see what happens
Great news about the rescue, Jeff! Glad to hear it.
Well, now we have heavy rains coming down. I will keep you guys posted as the afternoon goes on. Everyone stay safe!.
Chris Brailey, it is definitely headed your way. We are getting heavy showers, but they back off, so we are just starting to get into the edge of it now. Looks like it will be sticking around for a while when it does arrive.
I can hear it getting heavier on the roof now. Still not too bad as of yet.
It occurs to me without trying to start a panic, I’m by no stretch of the imagination an engineer don’t even play one on T.V., but if we get the same level of rain across Somerset and points east as they got in the west what’s going to happen when it all reaches Wolf Creek Dam on the Cumberland?
No kidding, it never snows like this in the winter. It’s always too dry or too cold. Ever notice that??
Amen! Glad to here everyone is alright.
Humid here in Corbin with some gusty winds. No sign of rain yet. As a matter of fact, the sun was out for a short time earlier. I feel sorry for those who have had so much rain. What a scary situation.
We are erasing the rain deficit we’ve had year to date. Didn’t need it to happen this way though. What a mess this is.

So, how about all of these insane global weather events? Frigid temps and snow in Brasil, flooding in China, Pakistan, Poland, heat wave in Midwestern US and Russia … could make for an interesting post about global warming/climate change. What about the possible tropical disturbance in the gulf?
It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice. Just a thank you it is mighty powerful information.
