Hello everyone. I wanted to throw a quick update your way as a TORNADO WATCH is now out for parts of central and eastern Kentucky until Noon today. Here is a look at the counties..
Take care.
PREVIOUS UPDATE
Good Sunday everyone and welcome to another very stormy day that will likely feature more severe weather and flash flooding. Much of the state picked up torrential rains from Saturday into last night. Anywhere from an inch or two to as much as 7 inches of rain has fallen in some areas. Those numbers are changing by the minute as we continue to see heavy rains working across the area.
The FLASH FLOOD THREAT for today and tonight is VERY high so please use caution and be alert to this increasing possibility. An additional, widespread 1″-3″ of rain is likely by Monday morning. That is in general as areas that get under repeat thunderstorms will pick up a whole lot more than that.
In addition to the flood risk… strong and severe thunderstorms will be possible into tonight as well. Here is the latest from the Storm Prediction Center…
Damaging winds and large hail will be the main players today with a smaller risk for a few tornadoes.
Here are your storm tracking radars…
The good folks at Kentucky Mesonet have a great real time system to track the weather across the state. Here is a map showing the rainfall numbers for select spots since midnight…
Please keep checking back for updates through the day. You can also follow me on twitter for some quick hitting updates on warnings and such…. @Kentuckyweather . These updates also appear in the top right corner of this blog.
I leave you with some amazing video of the flooding out of Nashville…
Take care.
Thanks Chris!
over 6 in Bowling green with numerous reports of flooding.
Tornado watch central and most of eastern KY until noon. The “theme from Close Encounters” siren just woke me up in Lex. That is an ANGRY looking radar.
I know! What is with that close encounter theme? I just checked and as of 6 am, Lexington has had almost 3 inches of rain.
just wondering does anyone know if this is going to hit knox county? Im kinda freaked out with this whole storm situation, so please someone tell me something.. thank you so much:)
so far at my house we have had 1.2 inches of rain
Very heave rain in Burgin since about
3;30. I can hear more thunder now
This is what the NWS is saying for my weather Today: Showers and thunderstorms. High near 79. South southwest wind between 10 and 14 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New rainfall amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible.
Tonight: Showers and thunderstorms. Low around 65. West wind around 8 mph becoming south. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between 2 and 3 inches possible.
Monday: Showers and thunderstorms likely. Cloudy, with a high near 76. West wind between 3 and 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.
That is more rain than we can handle in such short time
I don’t know why they play that. I guess its better than an “air raid” siren. The reality is that we don’t really have “tornado sirens” in Lex. After the May, 2004 Masterson Station tornado, it was explained that the sirens we do have are all located in parks. They are intended to get people out of the parks when bad weather approaches. Like, say, at 6:00 in the morning. In any event, our house backs up to Lansdowne Merrick Park, so when the siren goes off, we get a dose.
Morning, fellow weather watchers….second time in as many days we;ve beenwoke up with the weather radio going off…at approximately the same time. 5:30 AM.
Just looked at thr radar, and it is not a pretty sight. Everyone please stay safe today, and keep aneye and an ear on the weather.
Chris, will be depending on you for updates, as I know you will keep them coming1
My local forecast from the NWS

Is anyone else’s weather radio in Lexington NOT showing the tornado watch?
A little more than 3″ of rainfall since we started yesterday morning. Spoke with my Grandmother near Jonesboro AR. Tornado was about 3miles away last night They are still without power.
I am in Lincoln County and my weather radio is not showing the watch either.

MichaelT, mine is showing it, and a flash flood warning as well for Fayette.
Andy, my gorecast says heavy rains and storms, bu tit says some storms could be severe. Are you not getting that in your forecast?
Our rainfall totals here at the house so far are about 2.4 inches. (Having to catch it in a tube and measure it, so I am sure that is not accurate, but it is close to what others here are measuring.
And yes, andy, moderation IS working well today.
My rain gauge is FULL this morning and it holds 6 inches. That 6 inches includes the rain from yesterday and last night here in NW Woodford Co. The donkey field behind my house is becoming a donkey pond this morning!
My rain gauge holds 6 inches and it was full by 6 am this morning (that includes yesterday’s rain, too). Since then, I’ve been watching the donkey field behind my house become a donkey pond! Stay safe and dry, everyone!
I wonder if this faster frontal passage will hamper EKY’s chance of flooding tonight?
Getting ready to hit here again. Hope its not too bad.
I’ve never seen as many flash flood warnings up in KY as there are right now.
amazing how this is training over the same areas all weekend. Seems there is a defined line and doesn’t want to move east at all.

My neighbor’s house down the hill is surrounded with water. We are high on a hill so no flooding here. I don’t have a rain gauge but the horse’s buckets were half full with water. That’s a LOT.

Lexington police are reporting multiple streets are becoming impassible. Everyone use caution if you are going to be out in this!
moderation yay.
many streets are becoming impassable in lexington. be careful folks!
Still thunder and lightning in Jessamine County. A lot of flooding ocuring. Just got back from church in Wilmore. Jessamine station road is closed, Shun Pike flooded and closed, Hamilton Masters park in Southbrook all under water, as is the park in the West Place Subdivision. Water is coming up through manhole covers near Main st in downtown Nicholasville. Lots of other flooding all around the county. 29 is passible as of about 20 min ago, but with much more rain, I’m sure that road will close. Bluegrass Energy is reporting on the TV sporadic power outages.
The good news as far as the severe weather is concerned is the storm that prompted the tornado warning has weakened. Still some gusty winds possible and lots of heavy rain yet to move into eastern KY.
I don’t know how much rain has fallen in Burgin But there looks like ponds all over here.
Chris- looking at national radar, this does not seem to be moving east very fast. So it looks like the areas currently getting the rain, like Lexington, are going to continue getting it for a while. What say you?
and it could get ugly!
Is there going to be more severe weather this afternoon? Not just rain?
Think you can pass some of those along Joe? On UK’s campus.
SPC still has us in slight risk area. I have to think the biggest threat right now, however, is flooding.
Anyone have any flooding reports around Lex? Got some ponding here on UK’s campus.
4.5″ Inches of rain on Clark / Fayette CO. Line Winchester RD since yesterday Morning start
Flooding now in Perryville (northwest Boyle County).
Looks ok here on the NW side. Definitely seen a lot worse.
I feel sorry for you guys getting all that heavy rain. 🙁 I hope and pray we don’t get that much around Hazard.
Hazard will wash away if it does. I woke up once in the night last night to thunder and rain. So far today, it’s cloudy and the wind has been picking up.
Everyone please stay safe.
Everyone please stay safe.
I am not an expert by any means, but it seems to me as this band isn’t moving and it is expanding back to the west, Chris, and update would be appreciated.. OR can someone clarify, looking at the latest RUC, it does not look good AT ALL
Rain gauge just this morning has 1.3 inches. I’m sure it was that much yesterday also. Our yard looks like a lake.
My rain gauge shows 3.6″ since the start of the storm here in masterson station area of NW LEX.
My thoughts exactly! see my post at 10:44. seems like chris sees what we are seeing.
Yes, there are numerous impassable streets in Lexington- I’ve heard about these so far:
Armstrong Mill & Delong (someone reportedly trapped in a vehicle there)
Tates Creek & Gainesway
Tates Creek & New Circle
I heard others but dont remember and dont want to report incorrect info.
very windy, humid, and now partly sunny with temps. soaring into the 70’s here in knox co. a recipe for Disaster!!! when the storms do finally get here…
add Bryan Station & Briars Mill to the list.
Also, parkers mill. Reports of people trapped in vehicle there.
PEOPLE- do not go around barriers! If they are up right now, it is for your own safety. Dont put your life, and others, in danger.
sunny and 82* very humid degrees here in Barbourville…I hope everyone is ready for a stormy afternoon, and you better tie that patio furniture down or it will be in the neighbors yard….
Multiple reports of flooding in Lincoln County, including some water getting into the Moreland fire station.
US 25 is flooded between the southern Georgetown Bypass and Iron Works Pike-traffic is creeping through but is up to the floorboards of the cars. You will need to take an alternate route soon.
Keeping all with high water amounts in my prayers. Johnson County & most of the rest of extreme eastern Ky is still dry. Looks to be moving northeast just skirting us.
Shane do you think we will have much flooding here in Morgamn Co?
Official NWS/CoCoRaHS gauge reading of 1.56″ in northern Estill County at noon since 8AM obs. We have probably had half that again in past hour. Wow!
My vessel is nearly complete. The species have all assembled at Commonwealth Stadium. I am going to refuse entry to Cardinals. We shove off at 3:00 p.m.
