Good Thursday everyone and welcome to March Madness! We all know the basketball kind of madness that grips the country and especially the state of Kentucky. Go Big Blue! But… there is another kind of madness that we can sometimes get into around here this time of year and that comes from the weather. Your friendly weather dude has been, for a few weeks now, talking about the possibility of another taste of winter before true spring sets in. That taste may come later this weekend or early next week.
Between now and then… the weather is looking AWESOME! Highs today and Friday will warm well into the 60s across the board with a 70 possible Friday. Mainly sunny skies will be with us, though some early morning clouds will be noted out there today in some areas.
Saturday should be a very warm day as well as temps warm toward 70 in the east where sunny skies will be noted again.
A blast of winter will be working into the plains states by Friday and Saturday and will bring a lot of snow to some folks out there. It is this blast of cold that will be working eastward toward the region by Saturday night and Sunday and would carry over into Monday. The question is… how does this all work itself out? Some of the models have been bringing the front through here much quicker with cold and some snow by Saturday night and Sunday morning. Other models are slower with this as they develop a second low pressure along the front as it swings through here. That setup would bring the cold in by Sunday night into Monday and would have a better shot at putting down some accumulating snows during that time.
The NAM is on the fast track with the cold and snow.
NAM Sunday Morning
Check out what a temp gradient along the front…
As you can imagine… the NAM is also showing a quick transition from rain to snow…
Here is what the NAM thinks the snowfall will look like by Sunday morning…
While that is impressive… I have a hard time seeing much accumulation with a warm ground and temps above freezing. It’s cool to look at though.
The other scenario is slower with the cold coming in as low pressure “pops” just to our east. This would give us a chance for snow Sunday night into Monday. You can see this on the European Model…
The GFS is looking very similar to the European with the slower setup…
GFS Sunday Evening
Monday Morning
Here is what the snowfall map from the GFS looks like through Monday…
We will see how it all plays out. But the moral of the story is… Old Man Winter may still have another trick up is sleeve later this weekend and early next week so enjoy these next few days.
Have a great Thursday and GO BIG BLUE!!! Take care.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO old man winter!!!
Nah, one more flirt with winter brings a smile to me. I think, then, I will be truly ready for Spring to arrive. We’ll see. 😉
Please tell me this is an early April Fool’s prank.
I think the chances of accumulating snows in Kentucky now are equal to the chances of UK making it past the second round of the NCAA tourney. I.E., not very good. 😉
Bring on the snow lol, don’t kill me guys just a die hard snow fan and a die hard Cats Fan.My dentist ask me in the chair the other day how far I thought KY would go I said all the way!!!!!!!!
I’ve had enough of cold weather. This up and down lately has played havoc with me. I’m still fighting a 2 week cold.
What? you think texas or wake forest will be them? If they do, then we will have 3 feet of snow on Monday!….COME ON MAN!
these pesky low clouds have been hanging tough here in southeastern ky now for Days!!!…I sure hope the sun can break through today…looks like northern ky. is getting some nice, nice, sunshine right now… as for the upcoming nasty weather….:(
Same here…I hate being sick!!! I honestly don’t care what the weather does as long as the first full week in April is sunny and warm. Let old man winter have his last blast till late November. I’m ready to camp!!!
Go CATS!!!
Shout out to Scott Co. Cardinals…advancing to the second round of the Sweet 16…GO CARDS!!!
Texas will run through UK like a hot knife through butter. UK got the shaft really bad with their portion of the bracket.
I agree.
What is interesting though is that Lexington and Frankfort both are ABOVE average for temps. this month. We’re warm and dry relative to average at 18 days into the month now…
Texas will not get past Wake Forest. No worries.
I am working in Crab Orchard (eastern Lincoln County) today and the sun is in full effect. It’s warm, too!
Where is your team? Oh, thats right, they are not even in the tournament..
Nope. But the last time they played UK, they beat them by over 10 points. 🙂
Thanks Chris! We started out cloudy, but now, we have clear skies and the temp is rising fast! We are already at 63. Beautiful blue skies!
Gonna enjoy these next two days before the cold comes back and smacks us again!
GO BIG BLUE!!!!! Have a GREAT day, all!
I know it’s still 3 to 4 days out. But, with the latest models from the GFS, and NAM that came out at noon, and Chris Bailey suggesting it too, the Louisville area has a blue bulleye over it at the monday 12Z and 18Z. That would be a shot at 6″+ of heavy wet snow. Yet, every single weather forecast locally from Fox, ABC, CBS, and NBC has us in the 50’s and 40’s for lows, with not even a chance of a flurry?! Are the models wrong, or are the Local MET’s gonna be caught with their pants down, like they were in 1998 when they predicted sprinkles and light rain, with some flurries, and we ended up with 22″ of snow! Any imput or thoughts from anyone would be great!

Because the freezing line (at the surface where we live, not the 850mb level you always see charts for) is NO where even close to the Ohio River Monday morning.
Beautiful day today! 🙂
This entire month the weather has been YAWN BORING! I wish it would get more active. At least it is nice out today. Nice to see the sun
I don’t think Chris will be caught with his pants down.He is always saying they are just models and will change many times and not to rely on one model so we will see,but seems to me the models change as much as my hair color lol blonde,no brunette no blonde and on and on!!!! I am so proud of UK!!!!!!!!
