Good Tuesday everyone and thanks as always for dropping by the blog. Our winter storm continues to produce rounds of light to moderate snows across the state and that will likely continue right on through Wednesday and perhaps into Thursday. In doing so… more accumulating snows are likely and this will go along with more blowing and drifting snows.
So far… this storm has put down quite a bit of the white stuff in many areas. Much of northern and northeastern Kentucky have picked up anywhere from 6″-10″ to lead the snow parade. Other parts of the state will try to catch up to those totals with a prolonged period of snow showers and squalls.
The stuff out there today will continue to ramp up from time to time as a little disturbance moves in from the northwest. True northwesterly winds won’t kick in until later this evening and carry us through Wednesday and Thursday. Moral of the story… rounds of snow will continue and you can track them here…
Travel conditions will be terrible for much of the region today. However… a stronger sun angle helps out some during the daylight hours and can give road crews a hand. Once the sun goes down this evening… it’s back to snow and ice covered roads once again.
How much more snow are we talking about? Here ya go…
Keep in mind… this is everything that falls from today through Wednesday night. There will be some “hot spots” that get a little more than others and some “cold spots” that don’t get what surrounding areas get. That is just the nature of snowfall… especially when dealing with one that is a prolonged event.
At this point… I can see some snows and flurries hanging tough through Thursday and perhaps into Friday in the far east. This is a wicked pattern that wants to produce snow every chance it can get and that looks to continue. I am already gearing up for what should be another very active week next week that may feature a few more snow and storm threats.
The GFS Ensembles are certainly indicating the potential from late this weekend into early next week…
The European Model decided it wanted to go straight to a wicked winter storm for next Monday and Tuesday around here and for the eastern US. Here is what it shows for next Monday evening…
Something else to watch for will be a growing chance for a big dump of arctic air into the eastern half of the country for the last 10 days of February into early March. By the way… if you are looking for an early start to spring… keep looking because it ain’t happening! March looks cold and stormy and will likely provide a lot more winter around here.
Are you guys having fun yet? ![]()
Keep posting the weather and road conditions from where you live and I will update as needed. Take care.

thanks for the update chris.. Doesnt appear spring is anywhere in sight : ) Thinking the school kids will be going to school up till july…lol
Still snowing here in Morehead. I live in southern Rowan county we have alot of snow, hard to tell how much from the wind.. Most we have had in a long, long time.. 🙂
It’s 17 degrees, and roads are very bad, I took the day off from work.. Thanks Chris for all the hard work u do, and I really love those cams you had showing different road condtions.. Go CATS and Go EAGLES!!!!
Well with everything that we’ve had this winter including the nice December snowfall this puts Northern Lawrence County around 43 inches.
Thanks for setting the record straight Chris for the end of Feb first part of March
Make it stop!!!
All I know is that I kept reading all the Pike county “doubters” posts about how in the world it was going to snow 6 inches, well, it didn’t start accumulating until late last night, but I have around 3 inches of snow right now and it’s still snowing.
well looks like I picked up another 2″ last night with around 4″ on the ground now.
I’m beginning to believe that Jack Frost, and the Snowmiser has but a ROYAL BUTT KICKING!!! on the poor ole Heatmiser…LOL..LOL..
This has been a Winter to remember for MANY! and now looks to be the Winter that wont END!..It’s been a VERY LONG time since this snowlover could say that I’ve had about enough..I’ve had my snow fix now, its time to move on to warm breezes, green grass, shorts,flip-flops..LOL..but you know if ole snowmiser wants to throw down a foot of snow in my back yard, how could I possibly complain about that…:)
Whoever is praying for snow, Please STOP!! I love it too, but in moderation!!!
19°F here with a storm total of 5.5″ so far.
I’m watching the system closely that should arrive late this weekend…looks interesting…
Chris’ so-called ‘risky’ move named by some proved to be correct once again. Chris congrats once again by proving the naysayers wrong. When it comes to weatherforecasting, Sinead O’Conner, said it best – Nothing compares to you.
As for this weekend, you keep us posted Chris, I believe this could be a BIG one. I hope that’s not too risky for some. 🙂
Well, after AGAIN shoveling foot drifts from my driveway (almost two foot in spots yesterday evening), I have to estimate we got around 8″ of snow so far, so I will have to officially call the thirteen year dome, busted. My guess is we got more, but the stuff does not stick- who can tell?
I would smile, but I am too tired right now 😉 Gotta go to work now! 🙂
It is still snowing in Clay Co. We have had snow all night. Looks likes several more inches were laid down last night. I will need to measure later. I can’t believe this next storm may also be a big one. This weather pattern is unbelievable this year. I remember a time when we had srping break it may of been 1995 and we got lots of snow in March.
It’s 19 degrees in Menifee County this morning. We picked up about 2 inches overnight and that gives us about 5 inches for a total so far. It’s snowing lightly right now.

The one Fri-Sat looks kinda supressed and weakens significantly when it hits Kentucky. At least that’s what the 6z gfs seems to say. But the one sunday into monday starts out as rain and goes over to a little bit of snow. How can be warm enough to rain when we have a decent snowpack on the ground?
Eagles? You mean Colonels.
It is still snowing in Clay County. We have had snow all night. It has laid down several more inches of snow for us. I will try to measure it later. If anyone out there is from Clay County gives us a total around your area. I live in the northern part of Clay County. Sounds like it could be another snowy March. I remember a March in 93 or 95 I think that was the year that we had the big snow in March during EKU’s spring break.
The 06 run of the GFS is way off, much more than usual; the 12z hopefully will correct it
Have any parts of the state declared a state of emergency? I know that our county, Harrison, has declared a snow emergency. I was just wondering…
I think that chris should have authority over the nws.
It’s always odd how the snow accumulates in SE Ky. Our little area of Pike Co–the very SW corner–received a quarter to half inch in the valley I live in. Jenkins and the eastern half of Letcher Co received a couple of inches overnight.
“It’s 20* and there’s a hockey game on, nobody cares they are way too far gone, Screamin’ BOAT DRINKS! Something to keep ’em all warm!”
I shoveled an inch off my driveway this morning, not 3-6″.
It’s 19 degrees in Menifee County this morning. We picked up about 2 inches of snow overnight, which gives us a total of about 5 inches so far. It is snowing lightly right now and side roads are snow covered.
Is this snowfall more impressive in other areas? Can still see the grass sticking through the snow at my house in NW LEX. I’m sure the wind ruined it, but when you look out the window it’s not like you go “Wow that’s a lot of snow”
Obviously, you don’t read Chris’ posts. Did he state the totals would be through Tuesday morning? Didn’t think so.
The NWS called for an inch or less last night for my area. Chris clearly said that was a horrible forecast, yet they were right on.
Now that the dome is busted, I’d like to rebuild it over our farm. Chris has me all nervous with his statement that the next few weeks will stay cold and stormy. How long can we keep the ICE at bay???
🙂
I have been pacing around the house and making sure the dogs, cats, horses and goat have water, food, and plenty of potty breaks.
(after digging clear spots in the yard and shoveling the deck repeatedly)
Hubby is still out on the tractor trying to find our driveway.
(eastern Bourbon County)
We’ll see..but I wouldn’t throw the 06Z run out with the bathwater just yet. It’s a very possible solution. Will have to watch it…
Um yeah…where’s my 4-8″ of additional snow? I got 1″…as I expected. Did I get ripped off?
Keeping the ice at bay.. I’ve been wondering the same thing. In a pattern like this with lots of southern branch systems, it would seem like eventually we’ll get nailed by an ice storm.
I agree with Chris though, looks to me like we may not see a week of 50s until the beginning of March right now. 🙁
Perhaps you missed the tweet how the NWS was way off on their forecast for last night, yet, nailed it perfectly for my area.
When Chris nails a forecast for a single area everyone is like “All hail Chris” but when the NWS nails a forecast for a single area everyons goes “NWS Sucks! Your backyard proves nothing!”
I am changing my name from JUSTWANTSOMESNOW, to Justwantsomesun.. First outdoor soccer games are scheduled for March 13th…..want some nice weather
Lots of snow drifts in Northern Mercer/Southern Anderson Counties. More snow on top of this could create some real ugly conditions for rural areas.
I got another 2″ last night, putting right around 4″ on the ground..
Ole SNOWMISER IS KICKIN SOME SERIOUS HEATMISER BUTT HERE LATELY…LOL..LOL…
I see the gfs is trying to kick a major pattern shift for the end of the month going into the first of March. THat would figure, just as Chris says just the opposite…LOL..
I think I’ve had my snow fix for the season. I think im ready for sunshine,70* and some GREEN GRASS…LOL..TYPICAL..never satisfied are we?? oh well I guess thats one reason we live in Ky. instead of Alaska..LOL..
got about 4″ on the ground here in my area of knox co.
I think I’m ready for that early spring that Chris says we’re not getting…LOL..
Snowmiser is beginning to wear his welcome out…I need a break, cant get concrete poured in this weather!!!
WXman,
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – for a guy that is batting under the Mendoza line this winter, I see why you’re trying to save face. 🙂
CUTBANK MONTANA is today song by HANK JR!!!
I have to agree with ya…nothing worse than watching my daughter play in bad weather, and if it’s not thundering/lightening or below 35, they play. It’s hard core.
I would’nt put anything past given this weather pattern we are in…
Ole Henry seems to think this pattern is gonna switch around by the end of the month with SOME KIND OF MONSTER STORM!!!..
I guess ONE BIG BANG SNOWSTORM would be fine, but I sure dont want no ICE STORM!. at this point I really dont want either one, Tommy can have mine..LOL..since he already has close to 2ft. whats another foot…LOL…
4″ in my front yard…can’t imagine possibly getting 3 more. I don’t think kids will be back in school until Friday at this rate.
Chris, you briefly mentioned a late spring. Could you elaboate more. Could you (or any of you weather folks out there) give some predictions for spring and early summer (April-June). Was this winter predicted by anyone? Our neighbor, a man in his late 80’s predicted this winter based on the cool wet summer we had last year.
Um yeah…
First off, I believe you are in Madison Co. and CB didn’t say you would get 4-8″ of additional snow.
The 12:47 update has you in the 3-6 of additional snow.
Secondly, that is through Wednesday, not last night.
Maybe that will verify, maybe it won’t. But let’s not rewrite history here.
I can’t remember the last time we had this much snow in a winter. My husband and I have been married almost 17 years, and I don’t remember this bad of a winter since we’ve been together. Snowstorm, March ’93 was HUGE…nothing much since then.
wow,the radar indicates this thing is really winding down. the precip is really broken up and not really organized. I took a day off today. didn’t feel like battling the stupid 18 wheelers on the interstate that think it’s ok to do the speed limit in bad weather. Speed limit for them in bad wx conditions should be 55.
This is for you Rolo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeuoBbUC4As
Snow on the ground in Pikeville.
It is not snowing in Boyle County or the Perryville area at the moment. Wonder how many counties are running low on salt? Would enjoy one more big snowfall or maybe two or maybe three.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ve nailed every storm in 2010 so well that I’ve had people thank me for saving them from the local TV forecasts. So if I have a few folks here that don’t like it, that’s OK with me. 🙂
It’s snowing pretty good in Corbin right now…20 degrees
Northern Franklin County has about 7 inches on the ground with HUGE snow drifts – drove past a drift directly on the road this morning and it was half way up my passenger door on my Chevy S10 Blazer. In town around the Capitol it appears they are more around the 4 inch mark. Definately more at home than here. Back roads were still covered but main roads are fine.
I’m watching out for the weekend storm — will be checking in with you guys to see if it’s something we can get out in play in this weekend!
Some pretty impressive drifting going on especially in the rural areas – I saw some drifts to several feet on some of the windier roadsides. Picked up another couple of inches overnight, and estimate that we’ve gotten somewhere in the 6 inch range in Wilmore. It is hard to tell once again due to all the blowing and drifting!

There are some drifts to several feet on some of the windier roadsides. Got a couple more inches overnight, it is hard to tell totals b/c of blowing and drifting, but around I guess 6 inches.
NE Boyle County- Light snow continues to fall
Thanks Chris for the update!
I was gonna say around 5″ but I think 4″ is more accurate for my area in Berea.

Here in Berea (421) I have right @ 4 inches. Thanks Chris for all you do. Is there a number like 1-800-BLOG ADDICT? If so, I need to call……….LoL, Hope everyone has a great day.
We played in one tournament that was about 40 degrees, wind blowing rain it was so cold i hated it and the girls just give their all….so now i am praying for sun and at least 50 from here on out.
Wow. I guess that doesn’t include this storm because on Friday and Saturday, you kept saying it would be rain in southern KY, and you didn’t even think there would be a need for WSW at all in Kentucky.
Maybe you should apply for that TV opening in Lexington KY if you’re that good. 😀
Maybe four
I am in the mercer/boyle line and see nothing.
Here in Maysville, we have a lot of snow on the ground. The snow from last weekend (February 6) still had about 2-3 inches on the ground before this latest batch started Sunday night. We have an easy 8-10 inches on the ground with drifts in the 2-3 foot range.
I love snow as much as the next person, but after falling on the concrete and digging my car out two days straight, it’s starting to get old 🙂
I agree with you about the speeds. As far as the radar, it seems like CB is saying we could get more from the NW (lake effect) starting this evening-
“The stuff out there today will continue to ramp up from time to time as a little disturbance moves in from the northwest. True northwesterly winds won’t kick in until later this evening and carry us through Wednesday and Thursday.”

I’m sure there is help available for all of us who fit into this category, but where?lol
Before anyone gets all grumpy this morning and accuses me of posting something not true or something else like that, I mean this as a joke. Just saying….
I guessed at 8″ due to drifts, but I could be off. I have places where there is one inch and places with two feet. If the area is not protected by westerly winds, the snow blows away.
couple of grainy inches in SE Lex overnight–melted and refroze? Side roads are as slick as I can remember…
Looking at that map you can see why there’s so many different impressions on the snow for people living in Lexington.
Looks like SW Lexington got into 7-10″ of snow, but NW Lexington, where I live, is at 5″ or less.
Oh, and where can I go to watch your forecast, or where do you post your forecast maps so we can all keep up?
If comment sent to moderation, does it ever get posted?
I say your 8″ for Richmond is pretty accurate, you was about 2-3″ ahead of us. Crazy how Madison was divided into 3 for totals in a 20 minute stretch! I’m leaning more on 6″ in north Berea, after an unofficial measurement, drifts as high as 12″ in places.
I know we got more snow over night here in Northern Jessamine, just can’t give an accurate number due to all this drifting. I can hardly tell that the kids and the dog were out playing in the snow yesterday as everything is covered up again this morning.
Just went out to the field to check on my animals and had drifts over the top of my boots. Also found that the water trough heater quit working. I was met with a thick layer of ice in the trough for me to break up and pull out with my bare hands… that was a cold start to the morning!
That’s a very good question! I think they just go to internet heaven!
Does anyone see any hope for Southern Ky to get in on some snow this winter…every system except 1 has been a bust for us!
I’ve had some get posted. The idea of moderation is that it needs approval. It will not get posted until (or unless) it is approved.
I’ve had some not get posted, even though there was nothing controversial about what I wrote. When that happened, I just assumed that CB or whoever moderates was just too busy and didn’t get around to it before the next blog post came up.
HAHA. I tried to answer you, but off to moderation I went. So suffice it to say “sometimes.”
Bernie, how do they figure these snow totals out?
I live at East Point next to the Floyd County line, and I have right at 5 inches of snow.
Just curious.
When that happens to me, I go to Tools in the menu, then Internet Options, then empty all the cookies. After refreshing the screen you shouldn’t be in moderation for awhile.
I think Bernie or Tim told me about this, and it works for me.
oh god u all, now we get a REAL WINTER and now u dont wont it.lol
u can be a WINTER LUVER and griper when we are snowless and then when u get what u been asking for say im tired of it.
u wanted a old school winter as u got it, now we never recieved a OLD SCHOOL STORM as far as snow total go in 1 setting but everything else has been OLD SCHOOL.
just look at how long schools have been out since XMAS.
TIM if u get the chance next month u better hurry, cause that FLOOD I been talking bout will not be far off.
WXMan… under fire… take cover Brother!
no they do not get posted.
Tommy… dude… are we going to get together at PNS or what Bro!?! I plan on going home tonight and shredding up my subdivision!!!! There are a couple of hills and retaining walls that I can hit… Wooohooooo!!!!! Headed to PNS on Friday morning! Let me know and I’ll see youthere… bdwebb2@uky.edu hit me at that address!
Did southern KY get nailed? Last I heard Mitch down in BG was sad becuase they didn’t get anything hardly. Wow, that sounds about like what I was talking about, doesn’t it? All the snow fell along I 64. Isn’t that what we figured? I’m 10 miles south of 64 and we have a TOTAL of 5.5″. Fits in great with my 4-6″ call…when others were saying a FOOT. Do I want to go back to TV, naa.. Too much drama. I’ll just sit back and call it like it is. 😉
storm was a bust here…might have an inch in my part of the county and in Paintsville…when’s the next one? *lol*
One time my moderated post got posted. LOL I got moderated today — still waiting but it hasn’t posted.
My first time posting! They say that El Nino has alot to do with our weather. I am concerned about the tornado session that is fast approaching us! If El Nino brings this much snow then we might just get the tornado activity they are predicting. Any thoughts from the experienced weather watchers.
Yeah, mets are talking about a major storm next week, THE BID DADDY”, unsure where exactly but they are already talking about it…should be interesting!
Now I know why you are batting under the mendoza line, so-called WXman – Bowling Green is not part of SOUTHERN KENTUCKY!!!! Goodness gracious. And yes, southern Kentucky did get a great snow out of this.
It is snowing just a little on Perryville Rd. Looks like when you blow on a dandelion in the summer.
We have about 6 in Wilmore, after getting 2 or so overnight, with drifts to several feet in the windier roadsides!
Heard that…! I was reading blogs over at accuweather and they were talking about a superstorm between Feb. 22 through march 1st! Stated end of this winter will compare to winter of ’78!!!! Wow, something to keep an eye on!!!!
where in the world in southern ky. do you live? Im in southern ky. and we’ve had snow on the ground more days than not this month….LOL…
12z gfs shows that supressed storm
I talked about earlier now bringing light snow into the area.
Aren’t you in the richmond area? In my Richmond yard and in my part of town we had perhaps 3 to four inches, I I do realise a lot of it was blowing around. There must have been a sharp cutoff somewhere in town.
which blog?
No Morehead State Eagles
I heard that!!! were probably gonna go from cold/snowy to mild and rainy = FLOODS for southern ky..
I’m hoping for a break soon so I can get things rollin!!
Wow! We have alot of dandelion’s blowing in the wind.
found it. it looks as though that wouuld bring a ton of snow to us.
What do you consider Bowling Green to be in then??? It’s not Western Kentucky (at least not to folks in Paducah!!) It is only 25 miles from the TN line..to me that qualifies as Southern Kentucky.
Snowing on the Anderson/Mercer line on 127
I too live in southern/southeastern ky. And, unless I have been dreaming we have had snow on the ground or, snow in the air the majority of the winter. If there was ever a winter to break a 13 year trend/drought or whatever, this was the one. IMO
Please post link.
I live in Monticello we’ve had “white stuff” on the ground this month, but barely past a dusting at any one time. We did get 5 inches during the weekend storm a few weeks ago, that was our largest snow since January 2003 according to our local wx observer. We have an inch, maybe inch & a quarter on right now. Even the 4 inch snows make me jealous. LOL
I MIGHT BE ADDICTED! 😀
henry is on the “BIG STORM” train this morning on his blog. He thinks a big storm is riding up the coast next Mon.-Wed. Does it happen? does it bring us a foot of snow? or does it warm enough to be rain??? million dollar questions
I must agree that we haven’t had a thumping this winter.(although this winter doesn’t seem to want to go peacefully so the opportunity is still there) But, this is by far the snowiest winter we’ve had in quite sometime. So if we don’t get a big one this winter, maybe next winter will be better than this one. :p
Joe Bastardi on the STORM TRAIN as well, this morning. He shows in his video of what he is calling a 1-2 punch! type deal coming up. Smaller storm friday -sunday which would bring light snows to the ohio valley, then the BID DADDY comes in around TUESDAY next week!! and directly behind this storm CROSS POLAR FLOW sets up driving temps. into the TANK!!..
as if its not been cold enough…lol..I heard Todd Borek say last night on WKYT that last yr. Lex. area had 4 days of 60 or above by now in Feb. And this yr. there had only been a couple days above 40*!!!…
I am guilty then and I can admit it….I AM ADDICTED PLEASE HELP ME….:)
