Good evening gang and welcome to another update on our winter storm. Snows continue to fall across most of the region with embedded areas of very heavy snow. These heavier bands can put down a quick couple of inches in just a few hours. What we are seeing tonight is what we are likely to be seeing over the next few days… periods of very heavy snows.
I see that the NWS in Louisville decided against having any Advisory or Warning up for their counties and are calling for a half inch or less of additional snow tonight. Yet… I just see a special weather statement calling for 1″-2″ of snows in some areas this evening. Hmmm… sounds like some individual forecaster issues going on to me. Just admit the earlier forecaster made yet another mistake and put Advisories back up and move on. It is really that simple. The combination of a general 1-3 additional inches of overnight snow and blowing snow is more than enough for that.
As I mentioned… snows will continue to come at us in waves through Tuesday and into Wednesday with several more inches to fall. The 18z GFS snowfall map shows a general 3″-8″ of snow yet to come for many areas…
The snows will become more widespread overnight into Tuesday as our northwesterly wind increases. You can track the snows here on regional radar…
Here are some snow tracking cams…

Thanks for all the hard work you guys put into keeping us updated on how the weather is looking where you live. It is greatly appreciated so keep it up!
Updates as needed… take care.
Look like snow is something to get used to in the coming hours. Awesome!
Now lets hope my dogs don’t destroy it in my yard so I can get some pictures.
Do you really think Floyd could even see 4 inches? There is a ton of snow above us, but nothing has come down all day. I really hope we do get some, but so far the forecast has been severely off.
Here is snowfall total map from JKL.
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/jkl/?n=sigwx_winter
That GFS has Lexington has Lexington getting up to 6 more inches! What’s up with that?
My husband will have to get on his tractor and clear our driveway tomorrow morning before we can get anywhere. It’s more than half a mile long and we have thigh-high drifts in spots. Unreal.
(eastern Bourbon County)
Hard to figure out how much snow is on the ground here in Winchester. The neighborhood varies between 4 to 8 inches so I’d say around six with some drifts around a foot or more. Needless to say, the dome in done for here 🙂
We have a good 10″ in Crestwood and it is still snowing…. At this rate the kids wont get out of school till July…. hahaha
We have at least 6 inches in our back yard and the snow has finally tapered off. It’s too deep for my terrier to go potty for the first time in her life! 🙂
I don’t think there is much need for a webcam for Pikeville to be on here. We haven’t gotten a dang thing yet, and it doesn’t look good at this point.
WE FINALLY GOT A DUSTING HERE IN MINGO CO AM HOPING FOR MORE.
I don’t understand how many folks have 6-10 and many spots in Southeast Ky. have 1-2 when the radar has shown snow over us all day just like everybody else.. yet even with radar returns it is barely flurrying.. The sun melted a good bit of what we had today and now the ground is just starting to get covered again.
Wow, that is incredible. When was the last time Central KY. had a snow this big?
look up at northwest illinois. the snow is really filling in.
Looks like we’ve picked up 4″ or so today in London. Any other reports out of Laurel County? I’ve not seen Chastity or Shanks check in today.
Still snowing on the Mercer/Anderson County line. Had 3-4 inches at 3:30 P.M.; have picked up close to an inch since then. Probably nearing 5 inches total since last night. This is my third 4 inch plus snowfall this winter season!!
We had two foot drifts ins spots on our drive. Had to shovel it in case more falls or drifts. Some places you can see the top of the grass and places where snow gets stopped is piled well over a foot.
My guess is we have six inches, based on drifts, but I really have no clue. Just know it has been a loooong time having to move so much from our big and wide driveway.
how much more snow can marion county ky get in the next day
can anyone tell me what hwy 25 and the bypass in Richmond is like my son has to go to work 3rd shift and wondering about the road conditions around here
Here in eastern Rowan Co. we have received close to 10 inches, that’s not counting the snow drifts.
nice little snow band set up over us right now…have about 3 on the ground in Berea but I have a feeling I wake up to double that 🙂
Here in Eastern Rowan Co. we have received close to 10 inches, not counting the drifts.
I haven’t been this baffled all winter.. According to the radar the heaviest snows are over southeast ky. but all the high totals have been north of here? Sounds like this is the most impressive snow all winter for most folks. As of now it doesn’t even rank in the top 5 for here.
I have about 1/2 inch and it is pouring here.
It is snowing just not staying on the ground here in Pikeville, this is from Jackson AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

Do not fret Pike county, there is still hope. Snow just began here in Floyd Co, and I already have a nice coating on my lawn and road.
Thanks thats nice to hear lol!!!!!!
Russ, I’m in west Laurel(Cold Hill area), and I would say we have had 4″+. I have drifts up to my knees in places in our yard. Hard to measure with all the snow being blown around! We have had some very heavy snow showers off and on all day. Roads are really bad out in our area tonight.
I was out a couple hours ago and it wasn’t too bad…overnight may be a different story.
I’m on the east side of Morehead just out of city limits we are at 7 and working on 8 inches.
Well I have to say I was a little doubtful (Why? I don’t know), but Morehead really hit the mark with Chris’s map and even the Jackson NWS..I have been shoveling snow for hours this evening…i live on a high elevation and know I have at least 10 regular inches with drifts of 15-20 or higher…it’s beautiful..so thanks Chris! I know you didn’t make the snow happen, but I used to help a lot of people make decisions about today in regard to work etc. based upon your forecast..
I don’t know when you posted that blog, but it has us in another 4 inch range..is that what I can expect to wake to in the morning?
It quit snowing here in woodford. There’s a big hole in the radar over the bluegrass. What is that????
ten inches and counting here, the snow simply isnt letting up!!!
Got right around an inch here now and still snowing.
Hey Chris, just measured 3 inches fresh snow in downtown Jackson. Thats 5 total inches so far. Measure on flat surface with yard stick. Still snowing albiet slightly as of 10:00pm
All I can say is WOW! Chris I think your spot on with your snowfall map…Went to the car just now & there is at least 10″ on the ground. Theres 6 on my back porch, I was trying to get to the middle of the yard to measure but the wind was horrible & way to bad for me lol. Its a blizzard out there & i don’t reccomend getting out unless it’s absolutley necessary…It’s pouring & it doesn’t look like it’s going to let up anytime soon. The kids have only went one day in a week now. Last monday was the only day they got to go & with all this snow now & alot more coming, I doubt they will be in school at all this week. It is really bad out there. The snow almost came up to my knees! Great Job chris =)
Louisville is about done with this one..it has been a GREAT ride..now on to the next TWO snow opportunities! Chris was right about February!
Chris huh………..I HOPE YOU ARE WRONG! Another 6 INCHES for jessamine! PLEASE say it ain’t so! 🙂
Road Closure: Got a report out of town of Burgin in Mercer County that a road named Buster Pike is closed due to 4 foot snow drift.
Louisville is NOT done with this one. At least not on the east end. It is still snowing steadily. Plus, didn’t you read where Chris said we would see another 3″ in Louisville between tonight and Wednesday?! Look at the radar and you can see plenty of snow showers moving in from lake michigan. This will continue the next couple days.
Still snowing in Nicholasville. Wind blowing hard too! We live on the south edge of Nicholasville and back up to a big open field. In between our tree line we have a drift of about 30in according to the yardstick!!! Still putting it down too! LET ‘ER RIP!!!! Tommy is right, that snow in northern Illinois is filling in nicely! BRING IT!!!
The map Chris has posted here, is that the totals for tonight? The map he posted earlier is showin’ us in the 3-6 inch range. I was wondering which one is it? Thanks
I think the totals that you received for Harrison Co. were a little on the modest side. I live in Cynthiana and in my front yard there was every bit of 6 inches at 10 AM. I drove out in the northern part of the county and there was about 1 foot of snow on Stratton Pike, with 2-3 foot drifts.
Jason, I live in Perry County, and I’ve had plenty of snow today. (At least 2-3 inches.) There is a big drift right across my sidewalk. I live North of Hazard. You? Of course I live on top of a hill. Don’t know if that makes a difference.
OOPS! Tornadolarkin mentioned the snow filling in, not Tommy. Just excited about the DOME finally coming down!
Confirmed: Burgin Police reported this to Harrodsburg radio WHBN…….4 foot snow drifts on Buster Pike.
In 1978 we had a drifts over 5 feet high in Harrison Co. In 1992 we got over 20 inches in about a 36 hour period. Then, in 1997 we were supposed to wake up to a light dusting and woke up to about 18 inches. So, this is a small one compared to the others, but this one just continues to string out.
If things were to stop now, about six years ago. If we get the heavy bands through tomorrow- 1998 was the last time (but that was a mega snow- record thumper).
Hmmm…I’d love it if you were right. Where I am there is no snow- other than what we have on the ground. Time will tell.
I’m really impressed with the model output with snow showers through thursday I could easily see some areas go 3-6 more as chris shows!!!That’s after a look at the nam bufkit which is normally lighter than the gfs.
I spoke with an individual near western Anderson/Mercer line that lives down a 2 mile long gravel drive states drifts very high and would not be able to get out for a while. (reliable source)
People must have snow fatigue. I expected more posts. Funny. I guess it is kind of like pining for an old flame and finally running into them and realizing- I was pining for him/her?
I felt like that after shoveling all the snow out of my driveway and just now discovering half of it is back again already 😉
the beat goes on here in ft thomas…snow snow snow…small flakes falling hard
As far as Louisville goes, I find it hard to believe we’ll see another 3 inches. The snow showers seem a bit too scattered, but what do I know! Regardless, I think it’s really hard to measure the snow right now because of the blowing and drifting. What’s new and what is just blown from another place? Tough to tell.
love the snow..so pretty
Knox?bell Co line we might have 2 inches ,probably not more tho.
Well, since I am NOT in a snow favored area, I have not been overly impressed by the “storm” to this point. We have some very light snowshowers right now, but haven’t had ANY appreciable accumulation since about 10:00 AM this morning here in Somerset. I’ll be interested to see both Chris and Mitch’s updates for later tonight.
I tend to agree on both accounts. before it started blowing and the main storm was by us this afternoon, i measured 3 spots in the yard and we ended up with 7.5″ of NEW snow. 10.5″ total on the ground. NE Louisville near Oldham co. line. As far as 3″ more. Who knows…just depends if you get caught under a couple or 3 of those heavy snow shower bands that will crank on and off from the lakes the next couple days. So, it’s a hit and miss, much like it was with what part of the county you lived in today with the big snow. The spread was 3-8″ depending on the part of Jeff co. you lived in. Crazy, right?
It’s funny that the poster above from Floyd Co. hasn’t hardly seen any snow. I’m also in Floyd Co. and have almost 4 inches. Weird.
I two live in Floyd co. and there isn’t much here either only around an inch. Where are u you at in Floyd? I am in Hueysville, just off of RT.80
No snow on radar here in Corbin. So naturally it is finally snowing here again. Couple inches here so far. :p
gfs about the same, I’m calling this the blitz of snow showers and squalls!!!
I’m in Wayland, and it looks like maybe half an inch here. I just hope they cancel Big Sandy tomorrow. I really don’t want to go to Chemistry, lol.
19 inches in my front yard!!! incredible!!!
Must be nice Tommy! I have barely over 2″ here in Pulaski Co..lol.
Boyle County- 19* over 3 inches of snow since Sunday evening.
Thoughts for next system http://stormtracker.yolasite.com/
So so pretty! I love seeing white EVERYWHERE! 😀 We had 4 inches in Ashland early on, then received several more inches throughout the day and this evening. I do not know how much is out there tonight, but do know that our “cleared” roads are white again.
it really is amazing how much more snow nky gets than central ky…34” here on the season 18 at my parents in lex
pouring here in harlan co. of se ky. closing in on two inches. very high snow-liquid ratios. i conducted a little experiment. i took a sheet of paper, slid it under 1 3/4 inches of snow. melted it down and had .03 (three hundreths) inches of water… pretty cool.
That is a profound thought, BubbaG. I tend to dream of snow in the middle of a hot summer but my dreams never include 35 mph wind gusts, single digit wind chills, and a situation where we can’t go anywhere because of thigh-high snow drifts on our driveway. This snow will be pretty once the wind is gone.
