Good Saturday everyone. We are finally to the weekend and the weather is shaping up to be a tale of two states as we split the bluegrass in half with the good and bad. We will touch on this and take a look at a pattern that looks anything but like the month of September.
Before we get to the actual weather part of the program, I have some exciting news. Kentucky Weather Center and kentucky.com and the Lexington Herald Leader are now partners in all things weather. I will be the exclusive weather provider for kentucky.com and this means you guys get even more weather stuff from me. I will be doing a new and separate weather blog on kentucky.com. This is in addition to what you see here on KWC and I will be making each of them unique. You will also get video forecasts from me on kentucky.com for specific events across the region, including Kentucky Wildcats game forecasts. Kentucky.com and the LHL will also use me for any weather related story they do.
This is a big media partnership and one I am very excited about. This will not take away from what I do here on Kentucky Weather Center one bit. As a matter of fact, I will be adding much more to this site in the coming weeks and that will include more video forecasts and updates.
Go over to kentucky.com and check out the new blog this weekend as you now get a double dose of your friendly weatherdude. Lucky you! hahaha
Now to the weather…
The big upper level low we have yapped about for several days now, continues to set up a bit farther to the west. This will put much of the rainy and cool action across the western half of the Ohio Valley today into Sunday before spreading east late Sunday and Monday.
Here is how the GFS plays the closed low…
This will put the western half of the state in the prime area for some scattered showers and isolated storms today. The east will see only a small chance for a shower as skies become partly sunny. High temps will run close to 70 or a few degrees better in the central and east with 60s west.
Much of the shower action is likely to stay west of the Interstate 75 corridor today.
Western Kentucky will see the majority of the rains for later tonight into the first half of Sunday. A few thunderstorms will likely fire up as the closed low starts to slowly work eastward. This should bring beneficial rains to the west. Temps for Sunday should warm well into the 70s in the central and east and be cooler in the west.
A band of rain and embedded storms will then work east across the entire state from late Sunday into Monday giving everyone a nice drink of water. Some of these showers will hang on into Tuesday before skies slowly clear out from west to east int Wednesday. Temps will come back down for a few days to start the new week.
Mid week temps will then head back into the 70s as mainly sunny skies take over.
A new wrinkle in many of the models is starting to show up for the end of the week into next weekend. Several forecast models really amplify the pattern and dump one heck of a shot of cold air into the eastern half of the country. While I think it is on the extreme side of things, the European Model looks like winter…
That would bring an early season frost into much of the Ohio Valley and would also bring the first flakes to parts of the eastern Great Lakes into interior New England. Again… this is a rather extreme model run, but it is fun to look at for so early in the year. We will watch to see what happens as that would be a heck of a start to October.
Let’s get to today’s tracking tools…

Have a great Saturday and take care.
