Good Sunday everyone. Our wicked kickoff to the new year rolls on across much of the country and that includes right here in good old Kentucky. Temps continue to run more than 12 degrees below normal through the first 9 days of January. Snow has been plentiful as we have had snow reported across the area on each of those days! Regardless of what some will say… this has been one heck of a cold and snowy period!

Today will be a day that starts out bitterly cold for many. Here is the deal… skies will clear out for parts of the area and this will lead to temps that bottom out in the low single digits. Some sub 0 readings can’t be ruled out. For those who have clouds and flurries… thermometers will stay around 10 or a bit above. It is really that simple. Track those temps here…

Temps today will recover into the low 20s for highs with some sunshine returning.  Sunday night into Monday morning will see more single digit temps!

A fast moving system will dive in here late Monday into early Tuesday and bring a quick hitting light snowfall. This little system should have some gusty winds with it as well and can lay down another inch or two of snow. Tuesday will be another cold day with temps in the 20s.

We will FINALLY begin to come out of the ice box by the middle and end of next week. Temps will actually go above freezing for a change. It is also during this time that we watch a storm develop across the Gulf of Mexico. What happens with this storm is yet to be determined. Will it hang around down there for a few days as the steering winds leave it behind or will something try to dig in and pick it up? We shall see. The GFS says it hangs around a few days leaving only marginally cold air in place around here for a wintry mix of rain, freezing rain and a touch of snow by the end of the week and weekend…

The European Model is a bit more threatening as it is building in an arctic high across the Great Lakes that COULD funnel colder air in here as the low sets up across the south…

We know the weather has been cold and snowy around here. Did you know the same can be said for Florida? Numerous record lows have been broken in the sunshine state and they have had a few days of snow! As a matter of fact… it snowed in SOUTH FLORIDA for the first time since… January 1977. Hmmm… the winter of 1976/77 making some headlines again. Now, where have I heard that winter mentioned as an analog for the current one?

Anyway… here are a couple of videos from the frozen tundra of Florida…

Hey… cut the kid doing the snow play by play a break. They aren’t used to the snow… err… sleet… err… snow or whatever it is down in Florida!

Have a great Sunday and take care.
