Good Friday afternoon. Another quick update for you guys as we will see a batch of light to moderate snow moving across the state later this evening and overnight. This can put down a fluffy inch or so for some folks… with a little more in the mountains in the southeast. Winds will be blowing and temps will be in the teens so this will be a very wintry night with the powdery snow blowing around.
Track the snows here…
Temps today have been COLD to say the least and they numbers are spanking some of the forecasts I have seen out there. Get used to it as arctic air dominates this next week and beyond! Winds are gusty leading to wind chills in the single digits. Follow the temps and chill with these near real time maps courtesy of the good folks at Kentucky Mesonet…

On and off snow showers and flurries will be with us this weekend… especially in the north and east. Another couple of systems will drop in from late Sunday through Tuesday and these will likely put down more fluffy snow across the entire region.
After that… we are likely to see a widespread decent accumulating snow coming for Thursday and Friday of next week as another shot of arctic air dives southward into the area. This will likely bring an arctic wave of low pressure with it that will pull up a ton of moisture from the gulf out ahead of it. These can sometimes “pop” another, bigger low to our south and east and that will be something to watch for. Given the fact arctic air will already be in place as this system moves in… there will be no precip type issues and it will be wither snow or no.
Here is the Euro for Thursday Morning..
I will update as needed. Take care and Happy New Year.

Thanks for the update, Chris. Lets hope for a favorable track for Ky. next week.
Let us not speak of anything happening next week, then maybe finally we will be buried in that white stuff LOL…:)
an occasional flurry here in Knox County
Wed-Fri outlook from NWS Louisville THE NEXT SYSTEM OF INTEREST WILL BE A PIECE OF UPPER LEVEL ENERGY
WHICH WILL TOPPLE A PACIFIC RIDGE AND COME BARRELING DOWN INTO THE
PLAINS ON WED. THIS UPPER LOW LOOKS TO TRACK DOWN THROUGH
MISSOURI…THEN KY…AND FINALLY EAST THROUGH THE VIRGINIAS BY
THURSDAY NIGHT. HAVE BASED THIS TRACK OFF OF 0Z/06Z/12Z ECMWF AND
0Z/6Z RUNS OF GFS AND LATEST GFS ENSEMBLES. HAVE THROWN OUT THE 12Z
GFS OP WHICH HAS COME IN FASTER AND WEAKER WITH THE UPPER LOW THAN
THE CONSENSUS. STILL QUITE A BIT OF UNCERTAINTY WITH THIS
SYSTEM…BUT IF THE UPPER SYSTEM CAN PHASE WITH SFC ENERGY
ORIGINATING FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO…WE COULD GET ENOUGH MOISTURE
IN HERE FOR SOME ACCUMULATING SNOWS. AGAIN…THERE REMAINS MUCH
UNCERTAINTY WITH THIS SYSTEM SO KEEP AN EYE ON UPCOMING FORECASTS.
TEMPS LOOK TO REMAIN IN THE 20S FOR HIGHS AND TEENS FOR LOWS WED-FRI.
Thanks, Chris! Hopefully, we will see some of the light snow this evening! Next week looks interesting, to say the least! The temps are gonna cooperate, anyway!
Looking forward to your thoughts as that gets nearer, and to some good fooball tonight, and to a win over UL tomorrow!!!!
Man, these weather guys have no problem with predicting cold weather. Time for some hot cocoa.
John Wall says the Thursday snow will be a slam dunk, except for Louisville. To much warm air advection emanating from Porcini’s on Shelbyville Road.
That’s a good one. I guess they’ll only have acid rain in Louisville. I guess one could also pronounce acid differently.
ironically lex is above normal for snow this winter so far. temps were 1*F below norm across the region with frankfort an outlier closer to normal.
This is from JKL..NWS office….about the thursday system…
IF A SOLUTION SIMILAR TO THE ECMWF VERIFIES AND
MORE MOISTURE IS PUMPED INTO THE REGION…HIGHER ACCUMULATIONS COULD
BE POSSIBLE. WILL KEEP AN EYE ON THIS OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS
18Z definitely looks more like the 06Z run. For now I’ll agree that the 12Z run should be thrown out. Brutal cold and snow is a possibility for January. Remember last January?? -4 here with frozen pipes and an ice storm…that was not fun.
Hey Lincoln, how about those Buckeyes now?
Gotta love the new year. Snow AND the Buckeyes won!!
WXMan -don’t you even mention the “ice” word!! I really enjoy electricity!
WXman what are those too models saying snow or no snow?
Light flurries in Pike Co.
Mitch is there a chance that the Wed/Thru storm could be rain?
Well, it looks like the light snow love is going to be over northern and eastern KY for the weekend….we won’t even see a flurry, most likely. Oh well, I guess we wait and see about the late week storm that is brewing.
Nice to speculate, isn’t it? I don’t want to speculate,,,,I just want a good snow! 😉
Bowl games are turning out about as I expected….Auburn had me worried, but I expected Tennessee to lose, and I can’t really say I am surprised that LSU got beat. Florida is rolling… no surprise there.
Oh well, I have to go to work in the AM, so goodnight all. by the way, its 19 degrees here right now…very cold. If its gonna be cold, it might as well snow!
NO defintely not. all snow!!
12z split the system into two pieces and was not consistant with other models or the ensembles. one thing to see if the models trend higher in qpf as we get closer which has happened several times so far this winter.
Light snow in Pikeville temp 18.
Thanks Mitch
As of 11:33pm it is 18 degrees and we are getting a nice fluffy snow flake snow shower in Nicholasville.
Jake
ligth snow for berea, jackson and corbin areas overnight with a quick inch possibile.
Snow coming down pretty good in Manchester at the moment!
Nice dusting here on the ground already.
I agree Coffeelady!
Our snow showers enede here in Nicholasville. The thermometer is at 16.3, so it looks like to night will be our coldest night so far if we get below 16 and we will.
Jake
Woke up early this morning to light snow falling.
Madison County – Berea
Light snow

feederband and Snowcat, you both made me laugh out loud. It’s 7 in the morning so the day is off to a good start. 🙂
Hubby is out breaking ice so the horses can drink without walking to the heated water tank. Spoiled horses. One of them puts her hoof through the ice to break it up but it’s way too thick for that today.
Hi, Thanks for sharing such a wonderful piece of information. I must say that while reading your post I found my thoughts in agreement with the topic that you have discussed, which happens very rare.
I admire what you have done here. I like the part where you say you are doing this to give back but I would assume by all the comments that this is working for you as well.
