Good Thursday Evening and Happy New Year! This has been a wild weather year across Kentucky and it is looking more and more like 2010 is going to start off on a rather wild note with arctic cold locking in and periodic snows. I want to say a big thanks to each of you for all you did for the blog this year. We topped 2 million hits during the year and that blows my mind! I am glad you guys like what I give you and the feeling is certainly mutual as each of you make this blog something special.
A couple of the standout moments from 2009 include…
– The January Ice storm.
– The Destructive February 11th winds
– The Madison County May 8th Fatal Tornado
– The severe flash flooding in southeastern Ky
– The record setting cold and wet summer.
– The Mid December Eastern Ky Snowstorm
So, what are the headlines for the first days of 2010? Ask and ye shall receive.. ![]()
1. Winter Weather Advisory out for northern Kentucky tonight and early Friday Morning. Temps drop rapidly from northwest to southeast with rain showers to snow showers that can cause slick travel late tonight. Temps will be in the upper 20s by morning leading to a freeze up of moisture on area roads.
2. New Year’s Day will feature temps falling into the low 20s by afternoon. Winds will be gusty making it feel even colder. Snow showers and flurries will be possible… especially north and east.
3. Our flow Friday night into Saturday turns northwesterly with a nice fetch coming off Lake Michigan. This will bring a good shot at accumulating snows to central and eastern Ky. Areas in the east can easily pick up an inch or two during this time. Winds will blow the snow around, too.
4. Arctic air takes hold this weekend. Temps by day will run in the upper teens and low 20s with lows by Sunday in the single digits. Periodic snow showers and squalls will be with us with eastern Ky being the big winner.
5. The northwesterly flow will continue into the middle of next week. All tolled… parts of eastern and southeastern Kentucky can pickup several inches of powdery snow with a few inches possible back into central Kentucky. It won’t snow all the time… but it will come in bursts that will add up over the next 4 or 5 days.
6. Temps remain VERY cold through next week with low and mid 20s being as good as any day could possibly get. This will ensure that any snow that falls will not be going anywhere!
7. Signs are pointing to an arctic outbreak induced storm trying to form by the end of next week across the southern and eastern US. Bitter air would then follow whatever storm or system that forms.
This is one heck of a start to the new year, folks. Our winter forecast looks to be in excellent shape right now so I am cool with it all. lol
I will have an update late tonight or early on the first day of 2010. Stay safe and Happy New Year!
Take care.

Happy New Year Chris and bloggers! Lets hope a new year brings us a new winter trend (big snows, broken snow dome, big snows, 1978 snows, oh and did I mention big snows. Ready for it.

Happy New Year Chris and to all you out there in blog land!!! Thanks Chris for all you have done for us this year. We really appreciate every minute you have put into this blog.
Thanks Chris for putting time in this blog for us! What would we do without you? Happy New Year all!
What about the Pike Co. May and June floods? That was a very notable event.

Happy New Year 🙂
OH
FEEDERBAND
Question. I read your post on your recollection of the 1978 snowstorm. You said you woke up to a foot of snow and it kept snowing heavily all day. I’ve always wondered what the MOST snowfall from a single storm in Lexington was but that stat is NO WHERE to be found! The closet thing I can find is most snow in 24 hours was 13.4 inches (How can that be right)? I know in Feb 1998 we had more than that in 24 hours?? Didn’t we?
Thanks Chris for the update and exciting look in the near future! I suspect the blog will be pumped really soon!! I don’t expect the models to pick the BIG DADDY UP! 😉
A BIG thanks to Chris for being part of the BIG BLUE NATION! A toast to CHRIS & HIS FAMILY!! HIP HIP HURRAY!!!
A BIG thanks to all the bloggers for commenting when weather is good or bad! Each of your comments make this blog an exciting part in my life, especially in the WINTER! My favorite time of the year!! A toast to each of you!! HIP HIP HURRAY!!!
A toast to ALL the soldiers here or overseas! I totally love and appreciate each of them for their sacrifice to make our home a safe and fun place to live and play! HIP HIP HURRAY!!!!
HAPPY NEW YEAR 2010!! Here’s to health, peace, and good fortune to us all .. and ohh yeah and a BIG BLUE 2010 MEN’S BB NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!
NOW bring on the BIG DADDY and tear down the past decade of the MIGHTY CENTRAL SNOWDOME!!!
Apparently the most snow from a single storm ever in Lexington is 17″

Finally, (and I know you are all saying thank goodness) Chris, I hope that the blog tops 3 million hits in 2010, and that we all have a prosperous and peaceful new year, with all our needs supplied, and some of our wants, too.
HAPPY NEW YEAR to my weather blog family! Bring it in safely, ya’ll!
Well, I’m not sure. I know that on January 25, I believe (Monday), the local weather guy on 27, whose name escapes me, said we had 16 inches as of the 5:00 p.m. news. It kept snowing heavily for at least 12 hours after that. I do believe that was the biggest one day event in Lex history. The storm total was about two feet. And this was 1978. No snow plows. That snow had barely melted when we cut down the nets with a national championship, first week of April, 1978. I won’t even go into the two hour severe thundersnow storm that happened two weeks later. 70 mph winds, temp dropped like 50 degrees in fifteen minutes. Next morning, minus 15, windchill minus 45, and the City would arrest you if you were caught outside.
….the good old days.
congrats everyone on 2 mill hits, I for one hit refresh when i’m up late to see Chris’s updates so it may only be 1,999,900 but I’m glad kyweathercenter is doing so good.A happy new year to all as well. let’s ring in the new year with a switch back to old school tracks.
