Good Tuesday everyone. We are coming off of a nice little soaking rain on Monday with another below normal temp day. The pattern that has set up around here this September is a remarkable one in terms of cool and damp weather and the worst of it may be yet to come. It is looking more and more like we get in on a prolonged period of nasty weather later this week into the weekend. We will go in depth on that and show off a fall and early winter forecast from another source.
Let’s start out with the weather of today as it doesn’t look like it will win any awards. Low clouds, fog and some light showers and drizzle will likely start the day for many areas. These clouds will be very slow to burn off today across the central and east with some afternoon peaks of sun possible. High temps today will likely hit the 70-75 degree range for many… that is highly cloud dependent.

A stout cold front will swing in from the northwest on Wednesday. We will have a nice increase in moisture ahead of this system and it will increase showers and thunderstorms from southwest to northeast overnight into early Wednesday. Rains will be locally heavy at times Wednesday across the eastern half of the state.
The front will then slow down across the crest of the Appalachian Mountains into Thursday and Friday. Expect a couple of waves of low pressure to work northeastward along this boundary and these should throw some moisture back toward the Ohio Valley. This is where a monster of a cutoff low should form and camp out for several days.

That is something similar to what happened around here Labor Day week. Here is what may happen…
– Clouds and on and off showers would be common from late week into the weekend and possibly early next week.
– Temps will come way down with more than a few days in the 60s with the chance for a few upper 50s for highs.
– Any day that may feature some sunshine early would quickly cloud over and produce some showers.
– I have seen situations like these produce a period of heavy rains and that is something we will watch out for.
– Overall, this looks like a prolonged stretch of very cool and damp conditions. We shall see.
The good folks at WSI are out with their fall and early winter forecast. I have spent a lot of time in the past up at their headquarters just outside Boston learning the tricks of the trade and have a lot of respect for the work they do.
Here is their temp forecast…

They look to be seeing a lot of the same stuff I talked about last week in the early winter preview. The one difference is I am much colder in December! ![]()
I will have updates today as needed. Have a great Tuesday and take care.

I was checking out some winter outlooks by different folks and the majority of them are showing KY. Being the battle ground state this winter for ICE STORMS!!! I sure hope not!!
That is exactly what I DIDN’T want to hear. Not sure anyone likes the ice storms.
Not Funny BT!

I’m glad there’s no way to really know that in September, because I would hate for that to happen. I’ll take cold rain over the ice any day.
very well could be. overall pattern will likely feature cold drilling into the upper plains with ridging over the south. The more I look at things the more I’m seeing a winter that will fustrate forecasters. for cold and snow fans CFS V2 is trending colder it even has a cold Jan and Feb. before getting to excited both the JMA and ECMWF seasonal models blowtorch us.
