Good Friday afternoon everyone. A significant winter storm is moving into the state as we speak with rain breaking out across the southern half of the state. Dynamic cooling will soon take place and we will get snow to mix in with the rain by later this afternoon with a quick switch to heavy, wet snow coming by the evening hours. This will set the stage for a good old fashioned snowstorm for a lot of people.

The midday check of the latest forecast models finds them holding on to their respective outlooks. The NAM continues to be the wettest and farthest west with the heavy snow. As a matter of fact… the model is even farther west now and would bring Winter Storm snow totals to much of central Kentucky…

NAM Snowfall

The GFS is still farther east with the heaviest snowfall…

I will continue to take a slightly more middle of the road approach with the snow forecast… but I have ramped up totals a bit and come a tad farther west. I simply cannot overlook the NAM and it’s westward trend of late. Here are my latest thoughts…

I will have ONE more call on snowfall coming later this afternoon so be looking for that. I want to get one more looksy at how things are progressing on radar.

Let me say once again that I firmly believe the NWS is NOT far enough west with the Winter Storm Warnings!

This will be a very wet snow and it does NOT have to be 32 degrees of lower to snow with this system so keep that in mind later this afternoon and early evening.  Speaking of temps… track the thermometers here…

More updates will come later this afternoon into the evening. I will also be using Twitter to send out quick thoughts so be sure to sign up to follow me @Kentuckyweather . You can get those updates sent directly to your cell phone free of charge. These updates will also appear in the top right hand corner of this blog.

Take care.
