Good afternoon, gang. It was a brutally cold morning across the bluegrass state with many areas going below zero… with a bare ground! Check out some of the lows from the Kentucky Mesonet…
Lexington stayed at 0 or below for 6 straight ours this morning with a wind chill approaching -15 at times. Again… that’s just some absurd cold!
The Canadian Model fared the best with the forecast lows as it had much of Kentucky going below zero. That same model insists on below zero temps Friday night into Saturday morning behind the next arctic front…
Wind chills will be well below zero again late Friday into the first half of Saturday. This is behind the next arctic front that tries to bring some snow showers and flurries our way early Friday.
The cold start to 2015 picks up from what we had for most of 2014. Kentucky finished with the 15th coldest year on record…
I said over and over this past year that is was not a climate to be constantly forecasting heat and the numbers certainly bear that out. For the record… I won’t be saying that same thing this coming summer. 😉
An update on the messy pattern for next week comes your way later this evening. Enjoy the day and take care.
I think CB is ‘messying’ with us 😉 Get it? 🙂 Stay warm folks!
I think Chris is throwing out an early season hint!
Lets hope this upcoming system misses us completely as it certainly won’t be a pure snow maker, none of us want ice, and most of us have had many many times our share of cold miserable rain. Hope for sunshine!!!
Sorry Troy, but I am with upslope and would at this point love to see anything wintery. I really hate cold and sunny just as much as cold rain.
“Wintry” is a term better suited for late fall and early spring. Seems very very ironic for winter.
I wouldn’t mind some ice , change things up a bit , but I guess a lot of people would say getting snow would be changing it up lol 🙂
Anything but cold rain or cold and sunny works for me.
agreed
Well, hopefully if ice comes, your power won’t be out for a week or more and hopefully you or a loved one doesn’t have to be on the roads…..
Ice has nothing but disaster written all over it….
I do agree Troy. But if you take away all the tragic thoughts ice can be very majestic.
I have a generator so I don’t mind the power outages …and in all honestly never had weather I couldn’t go out in if I need to
Not sure what might happen later in the weekend, but I do like the fact that the Canadian was a correct model. Hopefully it is correct for the Saturday cold and Sunday comes in colder as well.
Thanks for the update Chris. I just wish you would be a little more vocal on your thoughts for next week. The suspense is killing some of these people. It does not bold well for snow lovers when you have NOT talked about the next storm.
The weather channel just shown mid 30 s and rain for Monday thru Wednesday! YUK!
Frankfort area
Look, this morning I woke up and my wife told me my HAIR looked Messy. Chris, please don’t use that same word to describe the upcoming weather. But your probably correct it won’t be nice crisp beautiful white SNOW that we would love to see. I guess I’m going to clean and comb my “messy” hair
I would not mind some heat this summer but nothing like what happened in the west.
Thanks for the update. Will be interested in the update on this messy pattern. Hope everyone has a great rest of the day.
WV station gives NO chance of precip until Mon. and it’s rain until Wed. when snow is mentioned at 40 percent. Don’t like that forecast at all. Yuk! I’m thinking that they are playin safe.
This weekend and next week will just be more of the same. Probably even see some 50 or higher temp once the rain gets here, that’s been the pattern.
are u predicting BLOWTORCH ?
Compared to today, yes. And it doesn’t take a blowtorch to rain around here. Just has to get 33, sometimes not that high.
By the way, I think I saw in one your posts you were from WV. Which part? I am from the land snow forgot (Huntington).
Beckley
compared to alot of people ,we get plenty of snow …but this year we have only had 10 inches ..and 6 of that was yesterday (forecasted for an inch) the first winter I moved here we had a record winter of 150+ inches which was in 2008-09 I think…(I think CB was at wsaz that year) 50-70 is an average year here
I figured you were in the Beckley to Summersville area. My area average is about 20 inches which we rarely see. Last year being an exception around 30.
Beckley WV is awesome. That’s some nice country to drive through.
Temp was 1 deg here on my farm this morn! Would really like to see some snow along with this cold! We have not had our first mesrable snow yet!
I’ll bet the folks up close to the river get the freezing rain and a mix, and the rest of us get the cold rain. Same ol pattern. So frustrating.
this could turn into a winter with many miss opportunities
keep the faith
people.
Wasn’t that last season? Here in Louisville we had over 20 inches of snow and I will complain about the several near misses that would have put us over 30. Lots of winter to go. Pattern is just now turning.
Yea, all rain chances now here for West KY after being freezing rain / wintry mix. Another bust. I guess no snow this year? Highs hitting 40 Saturday onwards.
Noticeably colder during last January’s arctic spell, so this was all anti-climactic in a good way.
People asking for ice, who aren’t standing on a beach next to an empty blender, need to seek immediate professional mental help.
Didn’t CB already say the models were continuing to under play the cold in the coming extended forecast? Let’s slow down and wait to all complain about cold rain…when we actually get cold rain.
Places in NA colder than Mars today. No, we aren’t in it but kinda sorta close.

Well I am going to break out the smoker and cook some ribs. Might as well take advantage of the sun, even if it is cold.
For no longer than the time it takes to get those ribs off the grill and into the house, I say you’ll do just fine. 🙂
How much for just one rib? 🙂 😉
Not much, just frost bite.
How much for a cup of coffee?
Just checked the NWS and local news station weather for my area – all the temperatures have shifted downward for next week since just a bit ago. Forecasts also changing ever so slightly toward a frustrated sledder Mom’s hopes for the Huntington/B’ville area.
Or a ribblett…Sounds awesome. With some cole slaw, baked beans and a nice cold brewsi.
Anyone else see snow moving this way on the radar now in Indiana?
Well if it rain’s anymore think I’ll shovel the mud in the yard..That’s all i got to say about that..
18 for the high today at my place. Mesonet said 19. The forecasts were calling for 25 to 27 (outside of wkyt which is Lexington area). They call for lows of 7-9 with one actually calling for tonight to be 19. Wonder if we get a little colder than the 7-9 since the highs ended up lower.
And I see some snow on the radar. Wondering if we can squeeze out a little tonight. If we do I am sure it will be nothing much. But it is so cold the light snow here is still on the ground. Might put a dusting on top.
80% of that snow south of Indianapolis is not touching the ground.
Festive falsehoods.
Ugggggggghhh
This Winter is a lost cause. Only a trace of snow so far in Huntington WV. I think the only way we get anything snowfall wise is to get one big/decent size snow like what happened with the superstorm in 93 or the big April storm in 87. Those storms occurred at the tail end of virtually snow less Winters. Here’s hoping that happens.
