Good Friday to one and all. We have another arctic cold front sweeping across the state today and this is ushering in more in the way of frigid temps. We may also see some snow showers or flurries to start the weekend. It’s the end of the weekend getting more of my attention for the wintry weather potential.
Let’s start with today and roll forward. Temps this morning will be in the 20s with very gusty winds and a few snow showers and flurries…
Temperatures will take a tumble into the upper teens from northwest to southeast this afternoon. The readings will then drop close to 10 degrees this evening as gusty winds send wind chills below zero for several areas…
Those numbers in far northern Kentucky may reach advisory criteria… again.
Actual low temps by Saturday morning will then drop into the single digits for many. High temps Saturday will range from the high teens to the low 20s.
This low level cold air is going to hang tough into Sunday as some “milder” air tries to overrun it. That will likely lead to a wintry mix of precipitation developing as the day wears on. That would then continue into Monday as a wave of low pressure passes by to our south. The models are doing exactly what I talked about and that’s trending colder. They have a tough time seeing leftover arctic air because it is very shallow in nature.
Freezing rain, sleet, snow and rain will all be possible across our region. Where you live will likely determine which of these precipitation types you get. This does NOT look like a massive system, but will likely cause some travel issues across parts of the state.
I will try to hone in on who has the best chance for what a little later today.
I mentioned the cold air showing up more and more on the models. This temp map from the European Model for Tuesday morning shows exactly what I’m talking about…
Another system is going to try to sneak under that cold Wednesday into Thursday and then turn the corner up the east coast.
Updates come your way later today. Enjoy the day and take care.
My first call
se ky – mix to rain
Northern madison to lex-. dreaded I word and mix
Northern ky- more snow then anything but mix
louisville area- mix and snow
But chris is the real weather guy. Im just going on trends .
W.a.a. it always wins. Southern system . W.a.a friendly since 1998
setting at 32 here in Carrie of knott co this morning
Always appreciate your forecast. Let’s make it a shovel ready weekend!
Looking forward to our mix to cold rain in Laurel County. Everyone have a great Friday.
I am concerned about ice in Central KY. We will see.
The good news it is it is not to be a big event, so if should not result in power issues. Super slick roads are a concern though. That said, last years ice / flash freezing events were nulled due to the winds. The wind dried the roads off before the freezing took place. Winning!
Started at 30 this morning waiting on the drop
Temps are 8 to 10 degrees warmer than predicted based on low temp prediction for last night (17) and for high temp today (20). I get that the temps will be falling later, but they’ll be falling by about the same amount as the unexplained overage. Odd.
I get that a vastly greater number of people are bummed about the lack of snow this year. Last year, it was just us in Madison and S,SE,SW of here that suffered while Fayette to Cincy to L’ville kept getting snow simultaneously. But as far as snow goes, look at it from this perspective. CB’s winter forecast was for what, 22″ (this number may be off, going by distant memory) for Fayette, Madison and surrounding counties for the whole season? Every day we have nothing to add to our total means more frequent snows in the future to get us to that total. This means we have a lot of snowy days ahead or just one crippling event. Heh.
I like the way you think.
As I have stated, this winter is going to be a dud for us snow lovers….cold temps are great, but dang it, Old Man Winter, give us some white stuff to play in…..haha
CB did not exactly forecast a lot of snow to begin with. He almost wavered and thought it would be a snowier winter then he outlooked, but smartly backed away from that.
Tundra winter.
My comments were not implying that anyone’s forecast was wrong, just restating what I thought was gonna happen weeks ago, and the wish for snow. Of course, it could change, but by the looks of the patterns I have studied, Im guessing it wont.
Well to cut back on the electric bill and to offset heating cost, I placed my freezer and fridg outside.
Just like CB says, “Never underestimate the north-west flow.” Also you should never underestimate the southerly flow. (AKA WAA) Temps have been as much as a 10 degrees above the forecast temperature! Remember last winter when there was a day before a forecast winter storm that would definitely have kept the~ 4″ snow pack and made it even deeper? (At least in Lexington) The forecast from everyone was around 30°, it ended up being 50°… a 20° bust.
Even CB said it on the news last night. The warm air beats the cold air up. 33/32 is real.
Weekend system, in one word rain, especially in East KY/WV. Maybe snow near Cincinnati. Keyword here is he said weak system. Because it is weak it won’t be able to push temps up to the 50’s as all the others have. But should have no problem getting temps up to the 35 to 40 range.
Thanks Chris. I appreciate all your efforts.
I’m holding out hope for a good snow or two until we run out of winter.
This weather stinks. I’m ready for spring.
Following next week it looks like spring will make a run at us, could the second part of jan feature some 60’s. We shall see.
Pouring the snow here in greenup
Doing a great job with this pattern CB. Seems like everyone is all over the place. Not really much showing other places for my area now. Seems they are now showing rain Monday and then warming up after that. Totally different from last night. I only mention these things because it fascinates me to see how quickly these things change.
Last year was not to bad with snow. Nothing major but we did have some. Need to get rolling this winter soon unless February and March are rocking. Hopefully we can see some good news about the forward outlook.
Where is the person that said Shane Smith was wrong predicting 29 for a high today? It seems pretty close i am currently at 30 degrees.
…… Is it just me, or is this the longest gap for significant snow discussions on CB’s blog? Even the winters we got hardly anything had lots of chances that just faded away.
Point is even the models are not sniffing anything out as far as significant chances around here.
Lucy lose her football?
Or did the models get fixed? Nah.
Was thinking the same thing. Not even a next week storm showing up on the Euro. The winter that never was! Lots of pre winter forecast called for a above average snowfall for the Ohio Valley. Going to see weekly snows from here on out if they stand to be correct.
Lucy is just shinning her pigskin up for a later winter Bomb!
Shining….oops!!
30s and sun here in knott co. Pretty nice day.
Well we can’t forget March 93….at least in NC, there was zero winter up until that point…..nada, nothing, not even bitterly cold…….So until March is come and gone – I don’t give up…….because you NEVER KNOW!
“So your saying we have a chance”!
Just like the Cubs and winning the World Series 😉
Dumb & dumber quote
Btw, So Far that’s what this winter has been (per snow)…dumb and dumber, hopefully the rest of winter won’t be PART two
Spelled it wrong: to 😉
Has – not is
Bright sun and mid 30s here in Carrie. Looks like a big time temp bust today
Warm air = Rocky and cold air = Barney Fife
Blowtorch temps are on their way
And the farmer hauled another load away.
Even when you have nothing to say, you still find something to say. Keyboard warrior
Considering some of the stuff you have posted, I wouldn’t lecture anyone else about being a keyboard warrior.
Blowtorch? Yea big deal. You routinely come across as rude. It’s been pointed out by others.
They only call me rude because I dare to disagree with them. I am not actually rude, whereas you are a rather arrogant sort.
Pot meet kettle. You’re a jerk, dude.
No actually I am not. 😉
You’ll see. This is a repeat of winter 1991. A few cold periods, snow drought. But you and guys like Jeff Hamlin are too busy attacking others, then crying about the blog being too “uncivil.”
Only attack is when you keep trolling. This blowtorch shenanigans is overplayed. There was absolutely no blowtorch weather last winter even though you claimed you had the most reliable sources. Now here we go once again with blowtorch weather that’s just not going to happen. But being the prophet of blowtorch weather that you are and have a track record of Accuweathers 45 day extended forecast you blowtorch theory has completely ran its course to no avail. You brought this on yourself last year and apparently haven’t learned when always contradicting what CB post.
It’s an opinion, and even if it comes across as goofy or overplayed, why react the way some of you do? were you, or are you being attacked? It’s just weather.
Not one personal attack or foul language has ever been used by me. Yet I get threatened with bans and guys like you and Hamlin can play blog police and rip on people. Even guys like Rolo, who’s posted since the wkyt blog and is pretty harmless gets raked over by Jeff Hamlin.
Raking over Rolo? Wrong again, buckaroo. 😉
Rolo routinely flipflops when he comments and I just happen to have the guts to call him on it.
Thats the name of the game with Rolo. That you take him serious and put him down is pretty sad
You guys need to get a room. It is just weather we are talking about. Hell I still think the Ohio River is going to freeze over this winter. Sure not a blowtorch in my books.
You have to be right eventually. And this may be it. Not attacking you or anyone either but eventually with weather most possibilities happen it seems. No matter how rare or remote they are.
Seems most places are showing seasonal with a few 50s in there. But that is pretty far out and I find anything that far out hard to believe whether it be snow, cold rain, dry, sunny, cloudy.
Thanks Chris. Hope everyone has a great Friday! Stay warm!
Chris, I know you are busy but would not mind seeing your input on this pattern and how it has played out. And a little insight on what the rest of winter may be like just looking at indicators and such. Seems like great weather talk to me.
As for this day. Wow, just about everyplace was calling for lower high temps for my area. My house still has 30 which is 6 degrees about the highest forecast high. And the wind is pretty gusty. I went to open the front door and the wind was trying to keep me inside. This wind, even at these temperatures, makes it feel much colder. And it was loud last night. Sounded like the wind was blowing a lot harder than the other night when wind chills were so low.
“Warm air = Rocky and cold air = Barney Fife”
This. BubbaG you have been on top of things this winter so far. Time to go outside and do a snow dance. You might just be the one to break this snow drought. I tried myself but all I got for it was some muddy shoes.
No snow on Tuesday? This chick is going to be up late watching the Buckeyes shoot the Ducks in the National Championship game!
Seems Chris is a little later on the afternoon update. Either pouring over all the crazy data OR nothing to see here. UUUMMM kinda makes you wonder…
I-64 corridor and points north freezing rain/sleet (potential), points south of I-64 cold rain for Sunday night/Monday morning. There’s your update.
Good One Prelude!
I would push the freezing line more into Southern IN. I think Louisville and the rest of Kentucky sees 33 degrees and higher with cold rain. May stick to some cold metal surfaces but all and all no problems.
That.
