Good afternoon, all. Temps this afternoon are blasting me and the models as the numbers are coming much warmer than anticipated. This is leading to mainly some light rain with a touch of sleet mixing in because of the extremely dry air.
Some quick thoughts…
– Light rain tonight into early Monday with the potential for some light sleet and a touch of freezing rain in the far north. Temps will drop some as precipitation falls into this dry air.
– Colder air comes back in later Monday into Monday night with another round of a mix or some light snow across the central and east.
– The air coming in from Tuesday-Thursday continues to show up colder with the NAM keeping highs in the 20s during this time.
– Overall, this is a well below normal temperature week across the state.
– The weekend TRIES to break milder for time, but that is now in jeopardy as a cold may push in on Saturday.
– The models are going toward a return of very cold air for the following week as our active southern branch of the jet stream continues. If you want snow, you don’t want the cold to overwhelm the pattern like it did this past week. Normal cold that week would likely equal snow. Bitter cold that week would likely mean dry.
– There is a past winter this one is reminding me of and I will talk about that year and how it ended with my late night update.
Back to the present weather. Follow whatever is out there today…
Have a great rest of your day and take care.
Thanks Chris. Have a great afternoon!
The only consolation for myself is that it’s not snowing like crazy 10 miles north of I -64. It pains me to hear from my Northern Ky friends bragging about all their snow that I’m not getting.
I don’t know where your Northern KY friends live. I live in Covington and we had one almost measurable snow in November and nothing but flurries since then. It’s depressing.
Also live in Covington. Bummed that we haven’t gotten any real measurable accumulation this year.
I’m with you. I live in Cincinnati and we only had the one measurable snow a while back. The models have been awful with temps.
I’m sure they aren’t talking about this season specifically just in general sheesh.
Playing out just as i thought. Going to be some wet feat later on. What a waste of cold air. Very frustrating pattern for is SNOW lovers.
Thanks for the update Chris!
I guess the good thing is that it will take some big snows if CB’s prediction of 30+ inches of snow comes true. Nothing on the horizon and in a little over 6 weeks we will be to March. CB is a good weather man and his prediction was a harsh period being late December or January. Curious if that meant he was thinking we were going to get our cold or snow during that period?
Jan. 14th parallel GFS will become the official operational GFS..Out with the old and in with the new..Just for fun the GFS and parallel have a monster low in the 10 day period..It’s a cutter but boy is it a monster..Hopefully the GFS will have one last hooray before retiring..
The talk of active Southern systems in a few weeks has me nervous. I don’t have any confidence whatsoever that the cold air can win out in Southern KY..thus meaning ice or rain for us.
Meh!!!
Anything wet, or frozen to cancel school in Somerset????? Please
A warm 46 degrees in SE KY …. Big time bust on temps … Nothing showing for the next 10 days, Saturday giving mid 50s. Where’s the big cold snowy winter that was predicted ?
In all fairness, everybody whiffed on this one. Most of the other mets I have read were calling for a big winter. I agree, this next week looks absolutely dreadful for winter weather. heck, if temps get up to low 50’s, I might crack out the bike this week.
Whatever happens, I’m ready for warm spring days and summer storms. In 43 years, never ween a darker, yet more disappointing pattern. I expect this will be the norm going forward, considering long term climate changes.
already down to 36 here in Knox
With warmer weather on the horizon, could we see a record early start to spring? If temps break 50 this weekend, and stay there off and on, I’ll probably notice our lillies and jonquils emerging.
Somebody said it best the other day, Kentucky has Tennessee and north Georgia weather from 20-30 years ago. Amazing what climate change has done to our winter weather.
I couldn’t care less about the weather today because the Dallas Cowgirls got their just desserts today! 🙂
Exactly! Rain, what rain?
Dallas AND Duke losing on the same day.
Blue skies and bird singing everywhere!
I’m not a Dallas fan by any stretch but I dont care how many times it can be explain that Dez Bryant catch was a catch! He clearly had possession. When Dez reached his arms out to try for the touchdown as he was falling he still had possession and ball control.
Sadly the NW shift kicked in……
Pine Knot has ice potential Tuesday night …. how much potential are we talking about ?
I live in western kY by the Ohio river. As long were in this pattern we may not any snow, it just how the cold air and the southern jet stream meets. We still got Feb and march to go so never give up snow lovers.
To heck with the remainder of this winter. Let’s move on to Baseball season..
I think this winter may never have left the batters box…
Hmmm…I’m in the dark as to the year he’s talking about. For my location, the winters of 2002-03 & 2009-10 didn’t really get going ’til late January…so I’m hoping he’s talking about one of those.
Nature will take its course as usual. I love snow but we just got to take what nature give us
Guessing 1991 myself. He mentioned it before.
I hope the 0 temps are over, because very cold air has no correlation on snow in this part of the world, the 3 inches in November will be the big one this year in frankfort! Strange place Ky is in the winter?
3” would be a big one of the bigger in Richmond… We probably have averaged on 3″ snow a year in the last 10. Some (south central) have had it even worse.
34 here in flatwoods
Temp now down to 36 in Irvine. Was 46 earlier today
well its time for the SNOW forcasters for the winter start eating crow. I am here to eat my CROW!!! actually just ate sum fish!!!lol but I predicted as bad of a winter as far as snow goes than last season. well I blew that., I saw a snowy period from Late December thru Early feb. all I see now is DEEP COLD SNAPS with no more than a dusting. then WARM air and NOTHING!!! BUBBA VADER LIVES!!!

Who mans the Charleston NWS? About 3 hours ago they had upgraded from nothing to a Hazardous weather outlook on the chance of freezing rain which was only until 7:00 pm – and now nothing and there is a major accident on I64 in Boyd County due to ice! I get so sick of seeing the NWS maps with a cirlce of nothing with a center pt out of Charleston and the whole rest of the region covered. Talk about a dome.
Really slick in Greenup…freezing rain advisory
