Good evening, again. The frozen ground is now doing its thing and leading to ice developing on roads across eastern Kentucky. Numerous accidents have been reported and Interstate 64 is apparently closed because of a pileup near Cattlettsburg.
Temperatures are mainly above freezing, but the frozen ground is leading to travel troubles. This potential has been outlined here for several days now and is NOT something that shows up on computer models, so most forecasts did NOT touch on this potential.
If you’re going to be travelling this evening into tonight… icy roads will be possible in spots. Keep that in mind and stay safe. We may try to do this again Monday night.
A FREEZING RAIN ADVISORY is now out for parts of northern and eastern Kentucky…
Help us out by posting the weather conditions where you live.
Take care.
Just posted this in the afternoon update. I am sorry to repeat it but would like to know what is up with this particular office –
Who mans the Charleston NWS? About 3 hours ago they had upgraded from our area from nothing to a Hazardous weather outlook on the chance of freezing rain which was only until 7:00 pm – and now nothing and there is a major accident on I64 in Boyd County due to ice! I get so sick of seeing the NWS maps with a cirlce of nothing with a center pt out of Charleston and the whole rest of the region covered. Talk about a dome.
That’s for sure. Chris keeps us up to date. We are always last to have any kind of advisory in Carter co. We don’t live in WVA. Bad accident near Grayson Ky exit ramp at 7:30 this evening. Reports are roads are very slick.
Really bad here in Greenup n Boyd Co! Lots of accidents! The accident that Chris mentioned was a 9 car pile up , other bridges are closed due to accidents aswell, one rollover accident around Rt 5 aswell! Stay safe!
Got in off of 64 in Grayson about 45 minutes ago. Bridges were very slick. Another bad wreck just off of the Grayson exit, exit 172 then with one SUV on its top. Don’t know about injuries. Did slide across a couple of different bridges coming home. Be careful. Temps hovering around 32-33.

Crazy slick in greenup
It’s 34 degrees in Greenup County near I-64 with light rain! Bring on the snow! I-64W bridges are very icy!
Guys thinking any school delays/cancellations for Eastern KY tomorrow?
34 at my place right now which is right on what the weather.com sight is reporting. The hourly had them predicting 37 for right now and they were prediction a low of 35. So a little closer to freezing here than thought possibly for the overnight. That would not be good with the frozen ground for the buses tomorrow.
…cold cold rain in the Highlands in Louisville.
Here in Cincinnati we are still only having wet roads, but the salt trucks are out spreading a layer of salt anyway. However, I’m in the Southern suburbs, so North Cincinnati could be another story.
Ice-covered roads here in South Shore, KY…several accidents in the area.
Temperature here in Grayson on Radio Hill is 34 degrees….35 here in town. Some lower elevations are reporting 32-34. Driving conditions dangerous because of slick bridges and slick spots on roads. Not actually raining right now.
Here at my place it is 33 but it is warmer in town. A lot of these back roads could end up fairly slick in places overnight.
I hope everyone who has to be out takes it real easy. Not much can be done to help traction on ice so be very careful.
Concrete was slick a few minutes ago in Irvine. Just misting rain, but freezing when it hit the concrete.
Nothing but rain in Powell County… I don’t expect anything different, however I did notice that some roadways were becoming slick over top of some culverts.
Rodger drove from Canton OH through Columbus and Cincinnati, thru northern Kentucky to Louisville to near Evansville IN this afternoon and this evening. Saw no troubles or ice whatsoever. He was actually glad to see no ice or snow. Rodger in Dodger!
All the rain is missing central KY. I’m amazed because it’s above freezing. I don’t think BGA shows any measurable precip so far.
Frozen roads in and around Paintsville.
37 and light rain in Lexington. Warmed up enough to burst my water pipes under our house. Ugg. Water is off and plumber coming back out tomorrow. First time they have froze in 30 years. Oh happy day
