Good evening, gang. Temperatures across the region continue to run on the cold side with temps well below freezing and even colder wind chills showing up. Now comes another shot of light moisture across the eastern half of the state and this may be enough to cause some travel issues into early Tomorrow.
The Winter Weather Advisory continues for southeastern Kentucky…
That is out for the potential of freezing drizzle/rain and some light snow. I don’t think that action will be limited to the counties under the advisory, but they do have a better chance than the rest of the region. Anywhere along and east of the Interstate 75 corridor should be on guard for some possible slick spots developing tonight.
Another sneaky little system looks to try to scoot across the state on Thursday and that one could produce some flakes. Here’s the future radar from the hi res NAM…
After a very brief January thaw on Saturday… another cold front dives in here for Sunday. Most of the models simply produce some snow showers around here, but the European Model shows a healthier setup with a wave of low pressure…
We shall see about that. Regardless… the air behind this front continues to show up colder and colder for Sunday and Monday.
Yet another cold front moves in a few days later and most of the models suggest a storm tries to develop along that boundary. The European Model…
Speaking of the models… the GFS makes the full transformation to the upgraded version starting tomorrow morning. NOAA has been running both versions of the GFS for the past several months and I have to say… the new version is VERY unimpressive. As a matter of fact… it has been scoring LOWER than the current version of the GFS.
Most weather apps run (and lazy human forecasters :))directly off the GFS data. They better get ready for some tough times ahead.
Enjoy your evening and take care.
freezing drizzle is coming down in southern laurel county at the moment, everything is icing over.
Some precipitation lightly falling from the sky in South Lincoln….possibly small snow flakes? Slick spots on the pavement too.
Mccreary roads are slick .

I read this and I immediately question why anyone would switch to something that performs worse. Maybe there is a reason but it really does not seem to make sense.
Thanks for the update. I hope that anyone who has to travel stays safe and is careful in areas with poor road conditions. Hate to hear of accidents.
because they invested money in it
I guess but just does not seem like a good reason to chose the lower performing model. Especially considering they are both running at the same time and the old is outperforming the new.
I am not up on the models in the sense of knowing if the new GFS has other benefits. Maybe as more tweaks are done it will get better and has more future potential. Not that important really I just thought it strange.
Yes, money is a reason, but it’s mainly because it’s a higher resolution model. It has a higher resolution than the regular GFS. Though the “new” GFS is not significantly worse or anything. It basically the same, but just a TAD lower.
the new gfs probably is horrible , but the other models haven’t been much better so far this winter…all of them have had a hard time figuring out temps and precip so far
If the old GFS is currently outperforming the new GFS in the same scenarios that might (not saying it does) indicate the old GFS is better than the new.
all of the models have been garbage as of late …even a few days out
Please bring snow!
From the NWS Louisville website: this meteorological winter (which runs Dec 1 – Feb 28), there has been no measurable snow (0.1″ or greater) recorded at the Louisville or Lexington official climate sites. Bowling Green measured 0.1” back on Jan 7th.
This is quite unprecedented for the area. The last time (and only time) both December and January recorded no snow in Louisville was the 1931-1932 winter. At Lexington, this ‘snow drought’ has never happened during its period of record.
With still over 2 weeks left in January, there’s still time. However, the long range temperature outlook is for above normal temperatures.
Chris, would you happen to have a list of weather apps (besides following WKYT) that does not run off the GFS?
The gravels in my driveway are glazed over, about 7:30 there were 6 wrecks in the county about the same time. Very icey out there! Thanks Chris, your the best.
Yeah I been watching my security cam and fine snow has been falling outside for hours here in London/Corbin area. I would imagine the roads are getting slick here now.
