Good evening, all. We have some nice changes coming our way in the short term, but things take a much different look shortly thereafter. A series of cold fronts will usher winter back in town through next week and that’s likely leading is back into another arctic cold period.
The better weather comes Friday and Saturday with a mix of sun and clouds and milder temps. A big gradient will be with us from north to south Friday with most areas hitting the 50s for Saturday.
A cold front sweeps in Sunday with some rain and snow showers and colder air. Another front shows up late Tuesday into Wednesday and the GFS is trying to develop something along this…
Another storm system will try to follow that up by later in the week and that’s something else for us to watch. The cold signal continues to absolutely run wild from late next week into the following week…
That’s wicked and looks a whole lot like what we had to go through around the same time last winter.
Enjoy the rest of your evening and take care.
Looking forward to a shot of snow possibly.
The 20th to the 25th of Jan. has been the coldest period for as long as I can remember (~50 years). 31st to Feb 1st – “Jan thaw”. Your big snows were always Feb 4-15. Just sayin’ ….
Like your “evodevo” handle, from a biologist wannabe 😉 .
Booooooo, please STOP the madness and bring on spring!
Steelers Nation
Can not help but notice CB still sees nothing in the models to mention snow.
That said, when I got home, I noticed a dusting was still on the ground and deck. Dare I say it, we could very well bust 1″ entire inch of snow before winter is done. Winning! 🙂
I don’t believe that it is he doesn’t see chances coming down the pike. It is the inability for some to not understand when they don’t pan out, so he is probably just tired of the overall whining from some. Just in my opinion.
Too bad Chris can’t actually bring on spring. 😛
SNOW…SNOW…SNOW. LOL
What hiappened this time last year?
It was the coldest and snowiest part of the winter,
For some of you Bjenks. lol Us in the southern part of the state had very wimpy snow totals last year.
Holycow Batman!!! So if we take them maps all verbatim it will be -14 degrees below zero at 850mb. What does make surface temps? Cold cold cold.
Things look to get pretty interesting in a could weeks.
Thanks for the update CB
I will say the maps above look very similar to those of 1976/77. Coldest winter ever recorded in parts of the Ohio Valley. Not sure if the snow, but 77/78 was another very cold years with snow. Winter might just be showing up after all.
If maps taken literally, it goes to -22°C below average. That’s nearly -40°F below average! But it’s at 500mb like Bjenks stated, but still, Lexington average high around 39°F minus -40°F = -1°F. Highs would struggle to reach zero and lows Well below zero. Obviously the ECMWF is running a little crazy today, to take maps with a block of salt.
Can’t you ever have good news? Every time I look there’s something about another cold front moving in or another polar vortex.
Hmm. That is good news.
Man this comment section of the blog doesn’t seem nearly as active as it used to be in years past. I guess it’s the inactive weather that’s caused this.
Things could get icy down here in London tonight though. The roads are wet from the activity today and temps are dropping.
It’s the winter of 7 day storms and festive flakes!
I think Chris is being sucked in by the Dark Side. Too much talk of better weather coming up ( better weather in Dark terms meaning talk of 50 degrees and January thaw) can’t take much more.
Yet another comment says I only talk about another cold front or the polar vortex. 🙂 Just shows how people focus on what they want to. ha
🙂
A trace of snow in frankfort since our November snow, hopefully one 6 plus inch snow will hit before spring comes, time will tell ??
