Good Saturday and welcome to the weekend, y’all. We have absolutely gorgeous weather across the commonwealth today and this is essentially our January thaw. Whatever you wanna call it… I’ll take it. This “thaw” is a short one as winter fights back in with a series of cold fronts on the way.
Highs today will warm into the low and middle 50s for most areas on a gusty southwesterly wind. Skies will be mainly sunny, but some clouds will increase late in the day into the evening. These clouds are ahead of a cold front swinging in here early Sunday.
That front will have some rain and snow showers along and just behind it. The latest GFS is a little more enthusiastic with the snow chances across the eastern half of the state…
This run even tries to put down a very small accumulation in the mountains late Sunday…
That moves away to start the new week with better weather for Monday. That won’t hold very long as another system dives in from the northwest late Tuesday. This one will likely have a small wave of low pressure along it…
That should kick off some light snow and could be followed by an extended period of light snow and flurries for the second half of next week as cold air continues to pour in.
Another system looks to follow that up a few days later…
That same run of the European Model shows a very amplified pattern settling in with additional systems lined up to drop in from the northwest…
Can we get one of those to dig in and develop something more? Time will tell, but those are some good looking model runs above.
Lately, I’ve been posting some of the Ensembles showing the potential for bitterly cold air to invade the country again later this month. Now some of the operational models are picking up on this. Check out some of the numbers showing up on the GFS…
-40 to -45 temperatures entering the upper Midwest? Ouch! We will see how much cold can actually develop later this month and into early February, but the pattern is certainly ripe for some serious cold across the country.
I will update things later today. Enjoy your “thaw” and take care.
The clippers tend to give us more snow than anything from the south. Clipper mania would give us some snow on the ground, at least. Plus, coming from the north, maybe we could bump it up to 30:1 ratios. That would be nice. Less moisture, but more snow.
Thanks, Chris. Kind of looking forward to this short warmup. I’m still hoping we can eek out a decent snow before too long.
Hope every one has a great day!
Duke or Cards?
Go Cats!
Cards should win and Cats should too, but both could be very tight and perhaps another OT game for the Cats? We shall see.
Figures it will be nice today, but I have to go jogging now. Not too cold though right now 🙂
Thanks Chris. Going to enjoy the “thaw.” Trying to put up a new mailbox. Hopefully we can get it done today. Also, going to a wedding early afternoon. Glad it’s a nice day for the happy couple. Have a great Saturday everyone. Go Cats!!!
WKYT app says 36 in Richmond. Awful thick frost for that lol. 😉
Today only vs. Duke = #JeSuisLouisville 😛
Felt like 20s to me.
It was in the 20s before it hit 40 an hour later. Frost evident, temp accurate.
I had 19 in my back yard this morning
Hmmmm – Paducah NWS has highs in the 40s next week with no mention of snow. Hope you’re right, Chris.
Running out of time for this ” analog winter” that was suppose to be worse than last year……oh well…time to do some maintenance on the bike and dream of long summer rides…oh and #gocards
This is the day the lord has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm 118:24
The weather is beautiful today and I am not concerned with winter weather or the lack if winter weather. I am just going to enjoy the day.
Amen
Finally got around to taking the Christmas lights down and a nice sunny day to do it. I’ll take it! Now we can move on to winter, hopefully.
