Good Sunday evening to one and all. The much anticipated pattern change is upon us and it’s coming in on a stormy note as a powerful cold front swings in. This front is a slow mover with tropical moisture surging northward from Lee down in the Gulf of Mexico. What is left of Lee is likely to work in here for the middle of the week and then hang out for a while.
Headlines…
– Showers and thunderstorms will continue to kick up into the overnight. Some of these will be strong or severe with damaging winds the main threat. Torrential rainfall is also likely and this could cause some local high water issues.
– A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is in effect tonight for far northeastern Kentucky. This includes the Ashland area. I would expect more watches to be issued for eastern and southeastern Kentucky over the next few days.
– Rain and thunderstorms will be around for much of Labor Day across central and eastern Kentucky. Things will dry out by the end of the day from west to east. Temps will struggle to get out of the 60s in the east and will top out from 70-75 in the west.
– What is left of Tropical Storm Lee will slowly work northward into our region from Tuesday into Wednesday. A swath of heavy rain and some thunder will push in with the greatest concentration across the eastern half of the state.
– This low will then become cut off from the main flow and hang tough across the region into the end of the week and likely into next weekend. This will provide a daily threat for showers and thunderstorms and will also keep temps well below normal.
– There are still several variables to be resolved in terms of exact rain amounts with the biggest being the exact track of Lee’s Leftovers. Here is a first call for rainfall…
– That is a first call and will be updated as the exact details of Lee come into better focus. Keep in mind… those numbers are through Friday. If the numbers across eastern Kentucky are realized… flooding is going to be a concern.
– The new GFS likes my rain forecast…
We have you set up to track this evenings rain and storms across the region…

It almost looks like a solid wall of rain is forming from the Bluegrass all the way to the gulf. The NHC 5:00 update moves the center of Lee further west. What is the chance that precip map moves west?
good evening from the town of wayne, wva. at 6:40pm the rain has stopped after nearly 2 hours of a good soaking down pour that saw nearly 1 inch fall at .90 inches with most falling within 30 minutes. i saw chris`s rain fall maps through friday and he had the town of wayne on the fence of 2 to 4 or 3 to 6 inches through friday. we have already recieved .90 inches with more to follow off to our south and south west, we may end up getting 2 or 3 inches tonight alone. i do not know where the nws was at today, where were the severe warnings at for the thunder storms. kudos, however, for issuing flash flood watches until 6am on monday. thank you for your time and may god bless you and your family.
Looks like Versailles hit particularly hard earlier this evening.
Right now, according to KU/ODP, about 2,200 outages being reported.
Several trees down along with high water concerns briefly, even closing some roads for a time.
according to my rain gauge we got 3.2 inches of rain in abt an 1 1/2 hrs time. Alot of water on the road ways in yards flooded. Was raining so hard on way to church at 5:40 you couldnt see the road.
Is it just me or does that “first call” for rain look incredibly similar to snow forecast’s??
Maybe it’s just cause i can’t wait until winter 😉
