Good Sunday everyone. Our run of heat is coming to a crashing end today as a strong cold front works in from the northwest. This front will deliver an increasing threat for showers and thunderstorms as we await the leftovers of Lee to come calling.
I want to give you a breakdown of how things look to play out…
– Showers and thunderstorms will ramp up today and some of these may become strong or severe. Torrential rains will be noted with these storms and some local high water issues may arise.
– This front slowly pushes eastward across the area Labor Day. Rain and thunderstorms will be common across central and eastern Kentucky for much of the day. We will try to dry things out a bit from west to east later in the day.
– Temps Monday will range from the upper 60s for areas getting in on mainly rainy skies to mid 70s for those with a touch of sunshine.
– Moisture from Tropical Storm Lee will arrive on Tuesday and the exact track of what is left of this system will ultimately decide who gets how much rain. As of now… a swath of heavy rains will be likely across the eastern half of the state.
– This system should become cut off from the main jet stream and hang around our region into the start of the upcoming weekend. This would mean a daily threat for showers and thunderstorms with temps running well below normal.
You can see how the National Hurricane Center is bringing the leftovers our way…
Some clouds from Lee are already pushing in…
Back to the weather of today. We have you set up to track the showers and strong thunderstorms…
I will have updates later today so check back. Have a great Sunday and take care.

1st again at 6:15am from the town of wayne, wva. unbelievable, oh well, on to the thing at hand and that is the weather. the temp is 70 with a dew point of 69. today may be the last time we talk about dew points and heat index again for awhile. i seen where the models have shifted west again with what is left with tropical storm lee bringing him into our neck of the woods by thursday pm. with that kind of track it would give eastern ky more of showery type of rains and give central and western ky more of a general type of rain, imo. thank you for your time and may god bless each and every one of you.
Thanks, Chris, for the update. We could really use some rain here, but I hope we don’t get too much of a good thing all at once. there is a burn ban in place for Pulaski County, due to dry weather.
I do wish that some of the moisture from Lee had made it into Texas. Would have been very beneficial for them.
Thanks for using part of your Labor Day weekend to keep us informed, (although we have come to expect nothing less from the best weatherman in these here parts!) 😉 Enjoy your weekend, everyone.
And be safe. Thanks again, Chris, for all your hard work on our behalf!
The rain is going to be a welcome sight. My pastures have gotten very crispy as we have not had rain for 3 weeks. Cooler temps sound great, too. Thanks Chris!
The track for Lee from the NHC has gone trended pretty far west the past day. It originally was going over the Va/Ky border, now it looks to track into south central KY. If that verifies, the heavier rains will be in Central/south central KY
One of the models that I’ve been consistently following for the upcoming week has repeatedly been spitting out amounts of 3-4″ for eastern KY.
In addition, any orographic lifting in far eastern KY could wring out up to 6″.
This forecast runs from now thru most of next week.
Although I like this model, I prefer to use it during the winter.
I was really hoping for some good rain today but its looking like its going to be a real bust. The radar is showing rain but not a drop is falling here in Louisville. Bummer.
good stormy afternoon from the town of wayne, wva. very bad storm about to come through the town, very surprised there are no warnings out for this storm from the nws. very dangerous lightning as i speak and very gusty winds. heavy rain starting up and it is 4:45pm. still no warning. the weather bug has issued a very dangerous thunder storm alert at 4:45 pm. i will report more if power stays on. kudos to the nws for the flas flood watches for the area until at least 6am monday.
Wow!! What a wind and rain event we’re having here in Woodford! The wind just snapped out umbrella pole like it was a toothpick!!
We’ve got it all here in SW Lexington–wind, torrential rain, lightning, thunder….what a storm. Looks like from the radar it’s gonna be here for a while.
Rainfall has been zilch here in Laurel County. Just a big bubble around us. Looks like any rainfall will hold off until tomorrow. Sun shining and temps actually have a fighting chance to hit 90.
It certainly looks like Louisville will be missed. Even the rain coming in from the south looks like it will go right past.
