Good Wednesday everyone. We are facing another VERY active weather day across the state with severe thunderstorms and flash flooding both likely. This INCREDIBLE weather pattern just will not let up!
Let’s start with the pressing matter of flash flooding in parts of eastern and southeastern Kentucky. As of this writing… thunderstorms were “training” across parts of southeastern Ky. This was happening in some of the same areas hard hit by recent flooding. Areas from Breathitt County into Pike County have been seeing the heaviest rains into the wee hours of this morning. FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS have already been issued for some counties and we will likely wake up to flooding problems in several areas. Here is the radar to track the storms…
Below is a doppler radar rainfall estimate. It shows several streaks of 3″+ rains across the area…
Here is a bigger radar picture…
A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is out for northeastern Kentucky into tonight and I am hoping the NWS in Jackson comes around and puts one out for parts of their area!!
The other weather headliner for the day will be the threat for severe thunderstorms. There is ample energy for supercell thunderstorms to get going across the region this afternoon into the evening hours. Damaging winds, large hail and even tornadoes will be possible across the area. If we get enough sunshine… look out!!
Here is the latest from the Storm Prediction Center…
Looking for better weather for Thursday? Look again! Here is the latest from the SPC for Thursday…
Like I said… incredible! But it may only get worse late Friday into early Saturday with the potential for a widespread severe weather outbreak from the plains states into our part of the world!
Stay with the blog for the latest updates through the day. I will also use TWITTER for putting out some warnings and other info. Take care.

Looks like my gut feeling about this being a very active severe weather year is holding true so far.
This weather is something else. I just woke up to thunder and lightening. I hope everyone is o.k. this morning.
Everyone okay out there? Just rain, and lots of it, here in Scott Co. No storms, wind or hail here.
Wow…if this pattern continues into fall and Winter, LOOK OUT. I wonder if the lack of sunspots, or a cooler sun has something to do with this weather pattern. It seems when we have solar minimum, we have weather maximum. 🙂
This really is a remarkable Spring. Since April 1…15.88″ of rainfall in Lawrenceburg. Some places have gotten more I know. Makes me wonder what Summer will be like this year…
does anyone know if pike co. was in a flash flood warning this morning?
my opinion..ENOUGH IS ENOUGH !!!!…I’m sick of this weather…Yesterday was a nerve rackin day to say the least…then I got rocked outta bed this morning real early with yet another LOUD THUNDERSTORM!!.. JUst imagine if our winter snowstorms were as active as the severe weather has been this yr..yeah right, I see that happening now, dont you?..lol…
alot of wind damage was reported to trees, and widespread power outages down here along the border in last nights squall line..I can only hope its gonna be a quieter day…:(
we can hope we actually get snow this winter Tim but not likely to happen
Well, at this point, all I am hoping for is a break on Saturday so we can get through the wedding. Of course, a break between now and then would be nice, too, since we are still trying to get the rest of the furniture moved to the apartment. Seems like every time we plan to do that, a storm, or tornado warnings, or something pops up to change them! 😉
Chris, how is Saturday looking? Can you get me a clear spot from about 4:00 until about 7:00? I would really love for the kids to get the wedding over and get out of here before it decides to rain or storm on them…. 😀
Sun is peeking here at my house
I’ve had it with all the rain. My yard has been flooded for weeks now. I’m ready for about a month of dry and sunny weather.
at least they cant holler DROUGHT this summer.lol
I am a bit surprised about how little has been mentioned about how hard hit Greenwood, in northern McCreary County, was by yesterday’s storms.
WTVQ had a crew filming there and WLEX mentioned briefly the hard hit areas of McCreary and Whitley counties in their web article about the storms but I didn’t see any mention on WKYT about the damage in those areas, which really surprised me. My apologies upfront if I am wrong and they did and I just missed it, but I would have thought that they would have mentioned it as well because of how well they typically cover weather events. Could it have been because the damage was in a fairly localized area, without a widespread impact?
My mom’s small farm was included in those hard hit there in McCreary. It looked like a war zone – so many trees uprooted, fences down (looked as though a truck had been driven through them), buildings damaged, electricity and phone service off – and several other folks experienced some sort of property damage in the community, too. We talked to one person who counted at least 30 trees down on their property alone from the storm. Several folks lost their roofs or at least parts of it. Downed power lines on Highway 27 caused traffic problems too.
We went down to help with the clean up and didn’t get home until 2:30 am – what a mess! Those involved in helping with tarping roofs and clearing limbs, etc talked about how it looked like a tornado for sure.
Chris, did anything catch your attention about it on the radar?
And, a quick question for anyone, please. How extensive does the damage have to be to have it investigated to see if it were indeed a tornado or just damaging winds?
Watch possibly to come for parts of central/eastern KY
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md1169.html
Flash Flood Watch in effect for Eastern KY:
http://forecast.weather.gov/showsigwx.php?warnzone=KYZ118&warncounty=KYC133&firewxzone=KYZ118&local_place1=Isom+KY&product1=Flash+Flood+Watch
And just like that, POOF the mesoscale discussion is gone. Maybe they pulled the trigger too fast?
Per CB’s Twitter, they decided to go ahead and issue the watch. Maybe when that happens the mesoscale discussion gets taken down and the watch comments take its place.
put ya glasses on i can see it

Strummer, Sorry to hear about your Mom’s farm. I was in central McCreary when those storms hit, wasnt as bad there but it was really really bad!
Last Thursday night, our way to Bonnaroo, in Manchester, TN. There was lightning the whole way…….Incredible!
On my drive back here to Corbin today, the Falls road is a mess. My sister was traveling last night on 27 in MC during those storms and got stuck between fallen trees.
To say the least, the Sun has been shining here in Corbin for a while and Im getting pretty scared for what today’s weather has in store for us!
