Twitter is down right now. Grrr!
4:40pm: Damaging wind event unfolding across southern Kentucky! A bow echo is racing eastward across the southern tier of counties with damaging winds in excess of 70mph likely. Numerous warnings are now out for these storms and I am using Twitter to deliver these to you. You can find it to the right and by signing up.
Torrential rains will cause flash flooding as well. Please post your weather conditions or severe weather reports. Send me pics or any youtube storm video you may get and I will put it on the blog later this evening.
Take care.
Good afternoon everyone. Here is an update to the update. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH has been issued for much of central and eastern Kentucky. This watch goes until 9pm with damaging winds being the main concern. This watch is east of the earlier wath that remains in effect until 6pm. Here is the county outline of the watch…

The latest warnings can be found here…
A cluster of severe thunderstorms continues to roll eastward across Kentucky. Damaging wind reports are pouring in from western Kentucky right now. Hazy sunshine is breaking out ahead of this line and will help the atmosphere recover from some moving showers. Damaging winds will be the primary threat and we could see this evolve into a widespread wind damage system. Large hail and an isolated tornado would be lesser threats.
Here are the radars for your storm tracking pleasure…
Torrential rains will move across most of the state as well and this is likely to trigger flash flooding. The ground is soaked and can’t hold much more so it will not take a whole lot to cause problems. These storms can put down a quick inch or two of rain in an hour or so. This is one of those days where I would like to see Flash Flood Watches going up ahead of this cluster. But that is not my call.
I will update the blog as needed so be sure to check back. Follow the Twitter feed as well for updates. I am working my “real” job this afternoon and evening so I will be doing some juggling. But, I won’t leave you guys in the dark. Have I ever? Shhhh… don’t tell the boss. ![]()
Take care.

The radar looks like it’s weakening a bit. I wonder if it will really charge up like they think it will due to the sunshine.
We won’t tell, Chris. 🙂
We appreciate you so very much. I’m keeping an eye on the possibility of storms this evening, so I’ll be here off and on with you. I sure hope people get a warning before any flooding takes place. We have had hazy sunshine here in Hazard where I work. I wonder if that means worse storms this evening?
Thanks again, Chris!
Thanks, Chris! Yesterday at a school safety meeting, we were discussing what to do in certain weather conditions.
One of the other teachers said that if they need to know the weather to just ask me.
I told them I couldn’t do it without Chris Bailey, all I do is read what CB posts about the weather.
Thanks Chris,
We really appreciate the way you keep us informed. Your site is the only place I go because you have the most accurate and up to date information.
Just eyeballing the current radar, it looks like southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee are geting a line that is in the dreaded bow shape. The northern part of the system doesn’t look quite as scary. Am I seeing it correctly? Let’s all hope we don’t get wind damage. We’ve had more than enough of that nonsense.
hey cb, what about the derechos? we had flash flooding last night here in eastern pike co.
Chris your blog will gives us the heads up we all need to maybe stay ahead of the flooding that we may see. I just wish that everybody had the internet so that they could also have a heads up BUT that not the case. We who get the blog is so lucky to have you Chris you are the best…….

Scary-looking double bowed lines showing on radar in W. KY and W. TN. I’m not liking the looks of that.
We have weak sunshine here in Winchester, the air is very heavy, hot and oppressively humid. Feels a lot hotter than the thermometer says.
new watch out for central, and parts of eastern kentucky
Watch just issued for the rest of the state.

Wind damage reports now coming in from W. KY. including roof being blown off a restaurant, power poles downed/outages, signs blown across I-24, and destructive winds in excess of 70+mph, heading due east. Keep a watchful eye, folks. We’ve been really lucky here in the Nelson Co. area this year w/ storms ‘splitting’ & us avoiding the really bad stuff, but doesn’t look that way today.:(
I just came inside from break, and the air does feel so heavy. It’s miserable. It really feels like it’s going to come a bad storm.
Well radar shots that far from Eastern KY shouldn’t be looked at to judge how its going to be when it gets here. If the sun is out and it feels humid then chances are its going to storm heavy. But if you are in an area that has stayed cloudy and had earlier showers then chances are better that the storms will not be as bad
Well, the radar looks scary right now, and it is getting mighty close to us….
Adair County is under the gun, and it looks like it is bowing out right over them. that COULD mean some nasty winds, for sure.
Heads up, everybody, and stay safe!
nasty bow for areas along and near the southern ky pkwy. winds willbe very gusty likjley over 75 mph in spots.
The bow of the storm is heading towards Somerset. Get ready Somerset.

2 miles se of McAndrews, Pike County.
Flash flood, reported by Emergency Mngr.
At around 1 am… two inches of precipitation fell in a
short time in The Ball Fork and Ball branch area. The
emergency manager estimates the flowing water was about
18 inches deep. This caused extensive damage to roadways
and culverts.
Virgil, here in Perry County, the sun has been shining quite a bit today, off and on. It’s been more like a hazy sun shine. That line of storms looks bad on the radar. Here’s hoping
it dies down before it hits over here.
seek shelter now in somerset!!! strong radar tornadic signature heading for the city of somerset

Wasn’t too bad in my neck of the woods in Pulaski County. But this rain is doing a number on already flooded ground here…this isn’t good!
Are these storms going to hit Morgan?
NWS reporting that law enforcement has reported a possible tornado touchdown in the Levi Jackson State Park in London.
Looks like we were lucky here in Bath co concerning the worst of the weather. The upper part of the complex doesn’t look too bad
Has anyone heard if there’s been any damage reported in Manchester/Clay Co? I have family there & I’m worried about them. Thanks.
there must be a drastic cutoff with this storm. I’m a little north of Manchester and the winds are barely blowing and it’s raining lightly. Yet 8 mi north of Clay they’re reporting a tornado.
WHAT A STORM!!!…sheesh.. That one put a few more gray hairs in my head, man it blew through here with very heavy rain, wind that had my trees doubled over and wind to make chills run anyone’s spine!!! a tornado was reported just a few miles to my sw. in the siler community..and then to my north in Barbourville…what a stressfull day…alot of tree damage being reported in the area, my electric was out for a bit but is back on now.. in Williamsburg large hail was falling and there is still spots without electric in the williamsburg area…anyone got a NERVE PILL…lol…I sure could use one I think…J/K..of course..I THINK!!
I know what you mean, Tim…I think I could use one myself. 😉
It never got TOO bad here. Heavy rain and a few 40-50+ mph wind gusts but no damage. Much worse to the south of us so I’ve been on the phone trying to check on everyone I know in Laurel/Knox Co. So far so good…
Corbin and Gray didn’t have power from Kmart to Yeagers
You can see the spin on radar with that cell..
Luckily the line pretty much died here in north Perry.. nothing but a light shower here..
no rain here at all
OMG! Did you really ask that? There is a nice bright radar (with lots of pretty colors too) at the top of the screen. Do you need help finding Morgan County?
Several meth labs and maybe a crooked politician or two, without power in Clay Co.?
Talk about wild looking clouds with this storm. We were standing outside in Northern Estill County and turned around to see clouds almost on the ground coming straight for us. There was very little rain and not much wind either, but it still had us all running for our homes!
Our weather radio went off about 10 seconds before the sirens – and about 5 minutes after it passed by us. Don’t have alot of faith in the ole’ weather radio.
Wow, Chris. You complain when they don’t issue warnings, then you complain when they do. Do you have some kind of personal grudge with the NWS?
It’s a safety issue, plain and simple. If warnings are issued for non severe weather, then the future warnings will not be taken as seriously by the public. I have been in Central KY for 5 years and wish there was a NWS office closer to central KY. The Masterson tornado a few years ago did not have a warning until 10 minutes after it hit Lexington. It does seem to me that Jackson and Louisville may use different criteria for issuing warnings, it seems Jackson is more liberal with the warnings.
Safety if everyone’s main concern. This is why we read this blog. We are a weather family. We stick together. No one in our family talks about Chris!
Hmmm!
Hi hmmm!
No personal grudge at all! The whole system of the NWS is seriously flawed and it is really showing this week. I actually like everyone I have ever met from the NWS. If anything… it is personal on their end!!

Something I noticed last week, when a strong line of storms heading south through bowling green stretching east to west (a pretty long line) as soon as the storms hit the TN border, sever t storm warnings were issued in TN, but looking at the line, it didn’t seem to intensify. It made me wonder if they do use different criteria
