Good Tuesday everyone and thanks for checking out the blog. This is likely to be a very busy severe weather day across the state as huge thunderstorm complex moves eastward across the area!
There is an increased threat for widespread wind damage as this system rolls through. Hail and isolated tornadoes would be smaller threats… but threats nonetheless. Last week we started talking about the pattern this week being conducive for these types of storm clusters known as an MCS or Derecho. You may hear those terms thrown around some today. These are famous for big time wind damage.
Here is the latest severe map for the day from the Storm Prediction Center…
There is a chance we see much of the state upgraded to a moderate risk for severe storms at some point today. Even if this huge storm complex weakens out some as it moves eastward this morning… there is a good chance it will rapidly increase later today.
You can track this bad boy here…
Flooding rains will be likely for some areas once again today so keep that in mind as well.
The blog will be on top of this situation all day long and will be your source for severe weather so please check back with us. You can also see my Twitter updates in the top right corner of the blog. These text messages will also be sent straight to your cell phone free of charge when you sign up to follow me on Twitter.
Have a great Monday. Take care.

Morning everyone. Looks like today is going to be interesting. MCS? Derecho? I hope none of us have to learn about those things first hand. The Upper Room today has it’s focus on those endangered by weather. I’m sure I don’t like the tie in. Be safe everyone.
This is pretty interesting.

Derecho is possible today. We might get the good ‘ol Moderate Risk today!!!
Chris,
Thank you for always staying on top of the weather for us. I always come to you to know what is happening. Hope those storms are not severe. I think KY has seen enough of the severe stuff this spring and summer. We appreciate all your work in keep us informed.
MOrning Chris, and all. Thanks for the update. Complex seems to be growing in intensity as it moves farther to the east. I hope this is not bad news. Not looking forward to a lot of storms, especially bad ones…
Chris, or Wxman, you guys think this is one of those things that will die down after sunset, or is there enough moisture and instability in the air to keep them fueled for an extended period?
And, please tell me we will see a break in the action. We still are trying to get some of the kids stuff moved into their apartment, and it is hard to move furniture in the rain, much less severe storms! Not got much to go, but the pieces we do have are awkward and heavy…(if anyone wants to come help us, we’ll take it! 😉 )
You will be in my tray all day, Chris! thanks for the heads up! Stay safe, everyone!
I really hope that this storm coming in this morning will stabilize the atmosphere enough to limit any activity tonight. I have lawn seats to see DMB tonight at Riverbend and would prefer not having to watch while a MCS is moving through 🙂
NWS Louisville is having a conference call at 11:00 a.m. to address the severe potential. Stay tuned.
I just saw a video clip out of New Jersey on FOX news this morning where they had a massive hail storm yesterday, over a FOOT DEEP!!!..they were shoveling it like snow and building snowmen, or should i say hailmen…totally wierd!!!
If you look at satellite and radar trends, it would appear that western KY and parts ot TN are going to get hit…but we should be mainly OK here.
All of KY along and west of I 65 now under Severe T-Storm Watch..
I tend to agree. The capping inversion will likely hold north of the Bluegrass and Western KY parkways. That area and areas north of them will still get storms, but they may not be that bad.
850 temps across southern KY are running around 20 deg C according to ACARS soundings out of Nashville. BWG would have to hit 90+ degrees at the sfc in order to mix out the cap.
South central KY and northern TN look to bear the brunt of this one. Though everyone will likely see storms this afternoon with another soaking rain.
sun coming out now and the derecho is heading more east or northeast now. should be here for dinnertime.
Looks like the storms have built into Central IL. I don’t see much of KY missing this line unless it falls apart. The sun is out in Georgetown down, more fuel for the fire.
It will fall apart right before Lexington….it always does.
