Good Saturday everyone. Our obnoxious heat wave continues across the state today as we await some big time weather changes to end the holiday weekend. These changes might take our weather from one extreme to the other as the potential for torrential rains is on the increase. More on that in a bit.
The heat is the big headline maker of late and it has one more day to do its thing. Friday saw several cities top out at better than 100 degrees with Louisville and Bowling Green leading the charge with 101. Lexington recorded its hottest September day since 1954 when the thermometer topped out at 98.
Temps today should be very close to the levels we had on Friday. Throw a touch more humidity into the mix and it may even feel a little hotter than what we have been dealing with. Follow the temps here.

Just like Friday, we should be able to fire up a scattered storm or two during the afternoon and evening hours…
Our weather pattern becomes a little threatening as we roll into Sunday and beyond as we shift gears and focus on thunderstorms and tropical rains. A strong cold front will approach from the northwest later Sunday into early Labor Day. Showers and thunderstorms will become common by Sunday afternoon and evening and some of these may be strong or severe.
This front slowly moves through here on Labor Day and will have a very nice tropical moisture connection from the Gulf of Mexico. That is where Tropical Storm Lee is located. This is a monster of a rain producer and may put down more than 20″ near the New Orleans area.
Take a look at what’s going on with this storm…![[Image of 5-day forecast and coastal areas under a warning or a watch]](https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/storm_graphics/AT13/refresh/AL1311W5_NL_sm2+gif/023812W5_NL_sm.gif)
We still have several variables to play out before we know just how great of an impact this system has on our region. As of now… it looks like what is left of Lee will drift toward us by Tuesday and Wednesday. This may bring a corridor of very heavy rains our way.
This low is expected to meander around the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys into the end of the week with more in the way of showers. We need to keep a very close eye on how this plays out as this type of a setup often brings problems to the impacted areas.
The good news about next week is the big time cool down. Most days will be spent with highs in the 70s with a few rainy days possible staying in the 60s.
I will update the setup for next week with a post later today so check back. Have a great Saturday and take care.

well, first at 11:30am, i can not believe this. oh well. good morning from the town of wayne, wva. the temp is in the upper 80s at 88 degrees and the heat index is currently at 94 with a dew point of 73 making for a very muggy and oppressive day to be out doors for any length of time. i for 1 can not wait to see chris`s take on the big rain maker for next week in tropical storm lee in the gulf of mexico. a lot of the models were keeping lee west of our area for most of the week and now a lot of them have him in southern wva by thursday am. with that track our rain would tend to be more of a steadier type of rain and if the track were to stay to our west then it would tend to give our area more of a showery type of pattern and a better chance at severe thunder storms with this. as chris has said in the past and is still saying, a lot of variables still have to come into play and chris should have a better handle on things later today. just a little note of interest, when i say our area, i mean the area to the west or east of huntington, wva. cause wayne wva is just to the south of huntington, wva. thank you for allowing me the time to type a rather lengthy comment and may the good lord bless each and every one of you.
excessive heat warning for hamilton county and cincinnati. here in dayton, high of 96 expected…humidity is relatively low though otherwise this would be torturous weather.
You know it’s a great blog when the first two comments for Kentucky Weather Center are from West Virginia and Ohio. Cheers Chris!
Well, it’s 100 degrees again today here in Owensboro. Cooking out today sure is gonna be uncomfortable. I am really looking forward to the cooler temps coming tomorrow, even if it does mean dodging rain showers during the weekend festivities.
97 degrees in the shade here in Versailles. As far as I’m concerned, this heat can take a hike. Can I get some days in the 60’s?
good afternoon from the town of wayne, wva. at 4:35pm the temp is 96 with a dew point of 68 and a heat index of 102 meaning there probably is not as moisture in the air in this heat wave as in previous heat waves during the summer. do not get me wrong, no matter how you slice it, it is still very hot, especially for september. some media out lets make me sick such as the weather channel in reference to the amount of rain that lee is leaving. the mets this morning were saying that 2 to 6 inches upwards of 5 to 10 inches not that big of a deal and it may not be for some but here in ky and wva in the mountainous terrain when you get 5 to 10 inches of rain in 3 or 4 days no matter how dry it has been, that is going to be a big deal. they really crack me up because unless it is affecting the i-95 corridor or unless it is a 200mph hurricane it is no big deal. thank god we have chris bailey who takes our local weather very serious. c`mon chris, we need an update on next week. take a little break from the football watching at half time and look over the models. thanks for your valuable time and may god bless each and every one of you.
this is a super blog and i omly wish that the blog at wsaz.com where chris now works was as quick at getting the comments posted as this blog was. and yes, i agree, it is saying something when the 1st 2 comments are from wva and ohio on a kentucky weather blog. goes to show what kind of following that mr. bailey has got going for him self and what kind of reputation he has……..EXCELLENT!!!!!!!!!!!!
